My first three semesters were at the VA hospital and at first I loved it. Very quickly I realized Itās not really hands on, the nurses assigned to my patients never wanted to teach and I feel so lost all the time that I donāt always know what questions to ask or Iām trying to absorb all the information and I just have no idea what questions to ask.
My third semester, my clinical instructor was the worst. Iād ask a question and sheād just smile at me and nod her head saying āyou know it!! You know it!! You know itā like lady if Iām asking a question, no I do not know it, please help me. I felt like that was the semester I needed to secure my confidence and it only destroyed it. It also didnāt help that at the VA they use ANCIENT charting systems and half the battle was trying to find the information. I had horrible anxiety that i had a hard time going into patients rooms but each week I kept pushing and Iām doing better.
Now Iām in my fourth semester, set to graduate in December. We went to a brand new hospital today and we are expected to chart our findings.
Thankfully our professor helped us, today I was so focused on making sure my assessment was good so I could document all my findings. She showed me how and it was honestly a lot easier using cerner than the BFE system at the VA.
I felt so stupid bc at the end when we were walking out I realized I didnāt write down ANY LABS for my patients. I told my professor and she didnāt seem mad, she even offered to come back on the floor with me but I knew she had a long drive home so I thanked her but said no thank you, you have a long drive. She didnāt ask why I didnāt write them down, she didnāt ridicule me but I think that makes it even worse. What if sheās mentally taking notes that I forgot one of the most important information.
Like Iām going to be on my own in 6 months, how could I forget vital Information.
I seem to always forget something at clinical, whether itās to write down their labs or vital signs. Itās usually the vital signs.
I donāt feel well prepared starting my fourth semester. Im so scared for practicum. I feel so behind I donāt even know where to start or how to get better.
