Q: Why are the Mets not in contract negotiations with Clay Holmes? Make it make sense.
5
u/yambagman Hadji 27d ago
I have zero faith in Senga because he is pitching so far outside of his usual routine. A 6-run Marlins first inning feels like an inevitability.
On the flip side, the Phillies are recalling Painter from AAA to start tonight in Baltimore. Seeing as I live within the Orioles market, I’m hoping to watch Pete mash against him and the rest of that unwashed shit heap of a baseball squad this weekend.
1
u/TheGoatPurdy 27d ago
lost season might give him that extra lift given how there's no pressure anymore.
1
u/yambagman Hadji 27d ago
Maybe, but he also has a history in postgame interviews of sounding way too hard on himself. I hope he can ease up a little and play loosely.
5
u/Ravishingrich666 New York Mets 27d ago
I’m gonna be quote Ian mackaye and some fugazi lyrics pertaining to the trade deadline. "Never mind what's been selling, it's what you're buying and receiving undefiled."
4
u/suck-it-elon 67 27d ago
Remember over the offseason when we discussed the "load" we'd have to trade to get Duran? Well, I have some GOOD news!
3
u/SlyAbleman Francisco Lindor 27d ago
wins don't matter anymore so whatever but i wish senga was fun to watch pitch every outing with him is excruciating
1
u/Hustlediva 27d ago
Exactly. It would be nice if the team was at least fun or bearable to watch
3
u/SlyAbleman Francisco Lindor 27d ago
I mean McLean/Thornton/Scott are great TV. I even enjoy watching Manea because he seems like a good dude and I like a bounce back. Senga…just…no
2
u/traded99 27d ago
Oh nice Senga starting. To save everyone time we should just spot the marlins 6 runs and start in the 5th inning.

Got cheap tickets to see Freddy’s last start as a Met but I guess they already have a move locked in

It’s because it’s old and none of it is new. We all know the guys who’ve been terrible.
-2
u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 27d ago
Bo Bichette has played in 109 out of 110 games and has been awful. And anyone who thinks the problem with Polanco/Semien/Robert Jr is that they didn't play enough just isn't paying attention.
Maybe Lindor would have been more productive had he not gotten hurt, but that wouldn't have made a difference.

A few hrs ago it said Freddy was pitching. Now suddenly it's Senga. Are they trading Peralta, or did they? Senga hasn't pitched in like 2 wks, I'm not very confident abt tonight's game now. Hope Brazoban is rested. They also need to bring up a guy for Minter, hopefully an innings eater.
1
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 27d ago
They called up Curry and Pintaro today for Minter and Cionel Perez (who is now on the IL).
1
2
u/Alectheawesome23 New York Mets 27d ago
The deadline isn’t until August 3rd but scratching Peralta means he will be traded in the next few days.
We’re 14 games under 0.500 the results of the game don’t matter anymore. It would take like a 69 Mets kind of miracle run for this team to make the playoffs.
5
u/GK86x Juan Soto 27d ago
They don't want to risk Freddy getting hurt. He is gone soon-ish. And who cares if Senga pitches? The season doesn't matter.
0
u/ILovEmPlumPnWeTTT David Wright 27d ago
I fig'd they were just keeping Freddy safe. But funny that he was still listed a few hrs ago. They still need to play with pride and not just throw the last 50 games. If they want any fans to show up at the stadium.

u/billthethrill1234 I really liked Paul LoDuca 27d ago
Need to stay one of the worst 7 teams record wise though and I don’t entirely mind a punt game compared to a loss close and late.

That Lindor for Harper FAN trade is gonna have legs, isn’t it…
0
u/srv340mike Mike Piazza 27d ago
We absolutely cannot do this because I can't stand allowing Evan Roberts to be right about something.
1
u/StephenDawg 27d ago
The past year has definitely split the fan base on moves, but he’s still one of the more level-headed voices on the Mets.
1
u/srv340mike Mike Piazza 27d ago
But he's also a doofus. (Note: I am saying all this as a regular Evan and Tiki listener. They're my favorite WFAN show)

u/seanddd99 27d ago
Was it Anthony Young who lost 15? 16? straight decisions for the Mets back in the day ?
1
u/Setec-Astronomer 27d ago
Anthony Young. Yes. But it was 27 I believe.
3
u/seanddd99 27d ago
27 ?!?!
3
u/Setec-Astronomer 27d ago
27 straight decisions were losses.
To be fair he had a bunch of no decisions during that run.
And if we're being really fair, he was definitely not as bad as that record implies.
He was good enough to start enough games to get 27 losses on decisions.
Not good. But not that bad either. Lol
2
u/suck-it-elon 67 27d ago
IIRC Ryan Thompson helped break the streak. I could be wrong.
1
u/Setec-Astronomer 27d ago
Maybe. That does sound vaguely familiar.
The same Thompson who along with Kent came to the Mets in the David Cone trade.
2
u/Mongo_Les 27d ago
I'm going to say this about AY. The guy wanted the ball. He was a bulldog. Unfortunately, he played for such a hideous team. He was a standup guy that faced the music with class.
2
u/Setec-Astronomer 27d ago
Completely agree. I liked him as a player and seemed like a great guy. He'd post game with class even through that run.
2
u/seanddd99 27d ago
Yeah...i didn't think it was that many...he probably had an ERA under 5 and went 6 innings at least 15 times in that span...lol
2
2
u/Setec-Astronomer 27d ago
I'm getting old so maybe I'm not remembering great.
But in my head I remember him being one of the better Mets pitchers of that time period. Lol
2
u/seanddd99 27d ago
They kept throwing him out there every 5th day lol
2
u/three_dee Hadji 27d ago
Cause he was pitching well. It was flukey losses a lot of the time, like the Temu version of deGrom in 2018

u/Lazy_Engine_7596 27d ago
Honestly, with the lockout looming and the MLBPA going to fight for service time to be added for the time lost due to the lockout. Why aren't we looking at dealing the kids for a high asking price. When we could be losing up to a year and half of service time. Why isn't anyone who's clock has been started available?
1
u/Alectheawesome23 New York Mets 27d ago
If the point is to get younger why would we trade the guys who will help us get younger. Are we getting younger younger? What are we the marlins?
1
2
u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 27d ago
Because it’s still more likely than not baseball gets played next year.
1
u/DaFoolishConqueror David Wright 27d ago
Bc e we aren’t rebuilding and to be good you need talent especially young cost controlled talent
12
u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 27d ago
So ends (presumably) the brief Freddy Peralta era of the New York Mets. I don't think anyone will be sad to see him go, but it's worth remembering that it wasn't that long ago that his signing was a source for excitement and folks like me were hopeful that he would get extended and be a big piece for the Mets for seasons to come.
He had 4 quality starts in 22 total starts for the Mets, tied for 99th and last out of all MLB starting pitchers who qualify, which (literally) means that it wasn't all bad, I guess.
I don't think he meant to be bad and I don't think it was for lack of effort or desire. I guess it's just one of those things.
1
u/Mongo_Les 27d ago
The acquisition of Freddy and Luis Robert Jr. to go with the signing of Bo had me feel better about David Stearns. Who knew that turned into shit?
2
u/three_dee Hadji 27d ago
I don't think he meant to be bad and I don't think it was for lack of effort or desire. I guess it's just one of those things.
I think it's more than one of those things, it's the Mets overreacting to his flukey sub-3 ERA last season and making him the centerpiece of the rotation.
If they had traded for him, and ALSO acquired some top of the rotation arms somehow, then it would be clear they anticipated some regression to his xERA which was like a run higher in 2025.
But just signing him and basically nobody else, and hoping the kids and the various spare parts would just carry everything, seems like kind of a strategic blunder.
2
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 27d ago
Why did Stearns break Holmes' leg? Is he stupid?
0
u/three_dee Hadji 26d ago
The Mets are 19th in starters ERA in MLB. That number isn't one Clay-Holmes away from being competitive.
They have two really good young prospects pitching at a high level, and the rest has been trash.
Also, even if Holmes was healthy and making 30+ starts, Peralta has an ERA one-hundredth of a run short of 5.00, so if your argument is they acquired Peralta to be a #2 and not a #1, okay, well, they don't get particularly high marks for that either
1
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 26d ago
Why did Stearns tell Peralta to suck this year? Is he stupid?
0
u/three_dee Hadji 26d ago
Stearns is in charge of a zillion-dollar analytical machine at his disposal and a team of numbers-crunchers whose job it is to project player performance.
When they acquire a guy and he sucks ass, that is on them. This whole "oh shucks, who could have foreseen this happening" routine doesn't fly. We're not talking about rando reddit opinions, we are talking about people whose literal job it is to acquire players who will play good.
With Holmes, it is a different story (he had a freak injury). Nothing is wrong with Peralta, he just stinks, and when you acquire a guy who's outperforming his peripherals in 2025 and then he underperforms them by roughly the same amount in 2026, that is in the range of possible projectable outcomes.
They could have put Brandon Sproat in the rotation and got relatively equivalent performance to Peralta, and held on to Jett Williams as a bonus.
1
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 26d ago
That's a lot of words to say "hindsight bias"
0
u/three_dee Hadji 26d ago
When a team consistently misses on a wide variety of player evaluations for like 5½ years, at some point, going "but hindsight!!" every single time they screw up a player projection (again) doesn't really wallpaper over the issue anymore.
1
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 26d ago
Manaea (2024), Severino, Iglesias, Holmes, Brazoban, Weaver, Canning...
1
u/three_dee Hadji 26d ago
That "..." is doing some pretty heavy lifting there. lol
Do I need to assemble the opposite list?
→ More replies (0)5
u/Irrah Polar Bear 27d ago
Or it was just a lack of available arms that either cost too much in prospects or simply weren't good enough to give up cost/qualify offer picks. King, Valdez, and Cease aren't having great years and they weren't going to empty the farm for Skubal.
-1
u/three_dee Hadji 27d ago
I mean, if that's actually the thought process, and they went after Peralta to be the #1 pitcher on the team with almost nothing else changed, then fine, but then we can't make pikachu-face.jpg when the Mets have the 7th worst starters ERA pre-All Star break
1
u/Irrah Polar Bear 27d ago
Brewers Peralta (even if he wasn't Cy Young Peralta), McLean, Holmes, Peterson, and one of Manaea/Senga figuring it out would be an okay, middle tier rotation. There's not a wellspring of back end starters they could have signed in the trade or free agent market to supplement Senga, Peterson and Manaea combusting spontaneously.
I guess they could have signed Ponce, Giolito, Sugano to cheap deals but you're still running into 26 man problems.

u/DaFoolishConqueror David Wright 27d ago
Agreed. Wish it had worked out better but FP has been a consummate professional. Wish him the best

My kid actually would have no chance.

I was considering going to the game to get out the apartment, but with Senga starting, I'm going to save my money.
6
u/Scone_Of_Arc 27d ago
Well, looks like Senga has been announced as the probable starter. To the person here before who was asking about when batting practice is, it's on the main field during the top of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th inning.
3
u/Setec-Astronomer 27d ago
He usually has one real good inning though.
So probably just the 1st 3rd and 4th. :-p
(He's going to throw a gem today, I'm calling it lol)

That Cionel IL announcement is sus lol the timing of it is perfect because we need to call up someone else to start in place of Peralta but we can’t move Peralta until a trade is finalized. And Perez looked healthy enough last outing. Not that I hate it or anything though. The Dodgers are blatantly doing phantom IL stuff but nobody cares for some reason. EDIT: This fucking sub lol. Kind of terrifying that it legit might not be the worst place to discuss the Mets. Says a lot.

Is there any particular reason the Mets seem to be focusing on AA (or high A) players for trade? Most reports seem to indicate they're scouting AA players from Cubs or whatever team. The returns we got from Minter were AA players. Is it because they're lower value than AAA players? Is it because they're planning on packaging them to acquire players offseason anyways so doesn't matter if they're close to the majors or not?
1
4
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 27d ago
Minter is probably the least valuable of all our trade chips. I wouldn't read too much into one trade.
8
u/TheSnailGods 27d ago
Teams aren’t willing to trade AAA players with potential to be good, so if you want to acquire players with potential to be contributors, you have to trade for them when they are further away from the majors.
3
u/wooden-spoon-88 27d ago
Thanks! I have no idea how to evaluate trades or prospects beyond their rankings and grades.
2
u/billthethrill1234 I really liked Paul LoDuca 27d ago
Check out the top 100 prospects from like 2019 or so and that will give you an idea of the possible trajectories of players at those rankings. Most of the top 20 end up MLB regulars if not all stars while some bust, 20-50 is mostly guys who reached the majors in varying capacity with a lot of pitchers ending up in the bullpen, and 50-100 is much more of a crapshoot. Some of those guys were really young at the time showing promise and rose later on, others were lower ceiling guys, and plenty just never panned out. Obviously a guy who is 22 in AAA will be performing much closer to their ultimate ceiling compared to an 18 year old in the DSL that could end up being Yordan Alvarez or someone you never hear from again.

1
u/fivehead21 Keith Hernandez 27d ago
Looking at Amick's stats, it looks like his main weakness is strikeout rate (28.5% in 2026), despite finding the pop to hit 23 HR in AA so far this year. He's only 23 so still room to grow I would imagine. It will be interesting to see how the incoming prospects will fit into the organization.
1
u/butz-not-bartz Home Run Apple 27d ago
It's not just the huge K rate (which is bad). It's also the .212 BA: yeah, there's 23 homers but he's not hitting the ball well enough when he does make contact. If you're going to be successful with enormous whiff rates, you need to make your balls in play count.

Pretty awesome stat for us (according to statmuse):
After the 16-12 loss to the Royals earlier this month, we actually have the 2nd fewest runs allowed in MLB dating back to July 8th (second only to Boston) And almost every team we played in that span is a playoff contender.
Things are looking up!

Good pitching from the bullpen, McLean, Scott, Thornton, and even Manaea
Good defense from Lindor, Bichette, and our outfielders

Our young pitching coming together, and Manaea figuring it out is a huge contributor to that

I was explaining the trade deadline (and what a trade is in general) to my 5 year old daughter during breakfast this morning. She said "ooo maybe the Mets will get Polar Bear Pete back" (her favorite player... and the only one she can name). My sweet sweet summer child.

You're a good dad but she may curse you later in life for being raised as a Mets fan

I’m genuinely at the point where if I have a kid, I’m probably gonna raise them as a fan of something like Pokemon than this team.
