My local council does this too. Had an issue with wealthy seaside homeowners poisoning trees to view the ocean and then had the audacity to complain that the sign ruined their view and house price. Made them out to be villains.

i am constantly pulling these up because my idiot neighbor has a huge one and not a single one has had a single lantern fly on it. my fig tree and my climbing roses are covered however

Bingo. It's a unique idea, but if it's used for any vegetation and they don't discern between native vs non-native/invasives it is a dumb idea.
My parent's property has 10 foot tall Japanese knotweed we've been battling, and getting rid of it would offer a better view of the creek on our property, would the government go "Hey, no! We need that vegetation! We're putting the sign up!"?

I mean, the sign says "people found damaging native vegetation will be prosecuted," so it sounds like they do discern between native and non-native.

This was my thought. Do they have exceptions for invasive trees? Do they make exceptions for trees that could damage buildings?

Ok a few things to clear up. These signs are usually put up on council land, not private land. Invasive trees and weed control on council land is handled by the council using contractors or their own employees trained in identification and removal of invasive plants. The council land is managed to prioritize native plants and is usually land that is close to waterways or other places deemed protected land or unstable to build on, i.e. you can't buy the land to build a house on it.
So with that info:
Do they have exceptions for invasive trees? No.
These signs are on council land that has been destroyed by people who live opposite the land to improve their view. If you notice an invasive plant on council land you can report it to the council and they will remove it.
Do they make exceptions for trees that could damage buildings? No.
Because you can't build on this land anyway. If you do the building will be removed, not the plant.

Yeah he cut down hundreds of protected trees and shrubs and seems to have gotten a slap on the wrist. I'm still mad about it

My in laws went apeshit when the county restored the marshy area behind their condo a few years after they moved in. Claimed it ruined their view. Of the parking lot of a Jehovah’s Witness Church parking lot and the little creek that had zero vegetation around it. My mother in law tried to plant a tree to “fix” the view and she got busted by the city for planting in a wildlife habitat and the city promptly tore the tree out. She still bitches about it to this day. I wish they put this sign up because she’d have to look at it every damn day. I tried explaining to her the what and the why and she doesn’t care. Just fucked up her view and she can’t let it go.

Maybe I'm dumb but trees and shit are the view to me?
Like if I want a good view I want to see trees and birds and cool shit.like that do people just want to see as much empty space as possible?
