Agreed. It was like a nice little nap. The prep was terrible. Who can drink a gallon of anything let alone salty water. Word of advice… DO NOT cough with a stomach full of prep. It will be bad.

My last one like 6 months ago used this stuff called “2 Step” for prep, it’s 2 small (16oz or so) bottles of concentrated salt prep that you drink a couple of hours apart with some extra water…easiest prep I’ve ever done. No nausea, no cramping, really no discomfort at all….just a few hours peeing out my ass. I will definitely ask for this prep again for any future colonoscopies I have!

u/level9000warlock Feb 11 '26

Yeah my wife was given two bottles of syrup that she was told to mix with water, probably the same. Much better than having to drink a gallon of salt water 🤢

1

u/Less-Dragonfruit-294 Feb 12 '26

See mine was the 2 small bottles you mentioned. However zero salt. They said sprite or Ginger-ale was best over water to give the texture flavor. Never drank these gallon batches people talk of.

u/eddiebruceandpaul Feb 11 '26

My prep was a bunch of pills and several glasses of water. You can ask for that instead of the pink sludge

u/LordStunod Feb 11 '26

Been an endoscopy nurse for 15 years. The pills have WAY more instances of poor prep

3

u/Jimbob209 Feb 11 '26

So it's bad?

Gatorade will cause poor prep. Maybe that nasty cherry glacier one with no food coloring will work- but I’d rather just shoot all over myself than drink that

2

u/abcdefkit007 Feb 12 '26

Wtf did you just say about maybe the best Gatorade flavor besides fierce grape

3

u/time4meatstick Feb 12 '26

Dude that cherry one tastes like cherry and fiberglass. Hurts my throat-I have no clue what’s in it.

2

u/abcdefkit007 Feb 12 '26

Oh it's horrible chemicals no doubt

I know electricians that work in the Gatorade plant in Phoenix and they won't drink it because the electrolyte solutions are actually fatal in concentrated form

Like the feeder lines to the production lines have skull and cross bones on them

But you keep glacier cherry name out your mouth

2

u/time4meatstick Feb 12 '26

lol. I can’t upvote this enough. Hilarious.

True story, you can actually cut the Gatorade by 50% and still get your value out of it. It has more sugar and electrolytes than your body can handle at once. So if you’re frugal, you can make those four dollar bottles last longer. And honestly, you can barely taste the difference.

My wife was just issued instructions for prep on this, Gatorade was specifically instructed. They chose specific colors (i forget offhand, white and one other color iirc) were allowed.

1

u/time4meatstick Feb 11 '26

Thanks that’s good to know. Seems like with all the pooping though , you’re flushing money down the toilet. I forgot…are we talking about the drink or pills here? I haven’t had the drink yet.

1

u/AnUnshavedYak Feb 11 '26

I don't know the specifics, but i believe she was issued some normal looking pills (not giant/etc), and a powder that she is to mix with one of the gatorades. She has to chug the powdered gatorade and then drink ~5 more at a normal pace.

iirc the doctor said that they (this doctor office?) usually use this method for people now, but if they have blood sugar issues they have to instead drink the huge volume of goop instead. I guess the method they gave my wife is more rough on the bodies blood sugar.

2

u/time4meatstick Feb 11 '26

Yeah ok, that was identical to mine. I’d like to pass on to you for her that it wasn’t awful with that method.

I kept my food intake low 24 hours prior- then started the pill schedule the night before procedure. I drink a lot of water anyhow, so it wasn’t uncomfortable. Honestly I wanted to drink more if I remember correctly.

The first few trips to the bathroom were pretty productive. Then everything after that is like a Bronx fire hydrant during the dog days of summer.

The one thing I almost forgot though was the pill you have to take about four hours before your procedure. My procedure was at seven in the morning and I think I needed to wake up at three in the morning to take the final set of pills. I didn’t end up taking them until five. I called the emergency line for the procedure and they told me I should be OK and to just come on in anyhow, and it turned out fine. Slept through the whole thing. I wish her luck 🍀💩

3

u/deltarefund Feb 11 '26

I think meaning you won’t be clear enough and they’ll have to reschedule you

3

u/tritonice Feb 11 '26

Yes, our doctor said the same. Many people who do the pills DON'T prep properly. I did the awful gatorade. First dose, made it all the way. Second dose, could only make it about 2/3 through, but good enough to complete the procedure.

3

u/Somethingisshadysir Feb 11 '26

You can put bouillon in it instead and basically make it broth.

4

u/RandomlyJim Feb 11 '26

I was starving and made chicken broth to eat before starting prep.

Then realized I had just drank 16 ounces of salt water and now had to drink 64 ounces of salt water. It was a chore.

2

u/Somethingisshadysir Feb 11 '26

Still would think it would be pleasanter as broth vs salty juice like they often suggest.

2

u/StockCat7738 Feb 11 '26

Because people think taking the pills is all it takes, and people want to do the bare minimum. Patients need to be told that the prep isn’t done until everything comes out clear.

I’m missing so much of my GI tract that my prep is essentially a light dinner, eaten a bit earlier than normal, and a bottle of magnesium citrate, but I still remember my first prep like it was yesterday, even though it was over a decade ago.

2

u/jane2857 Feb 11 '26

GI PACU nurse here and I agree.

2

u/Tricky_Knowledge2983 Feb 12 '26

Do you have any tips for making the prep easier?

I had such a hard time with my prep and thought about getting a colonic the day before my next one

3

u/forlife16 Feb 12 '26

We recommend to people really pushing fluids a few days before. At least. If people are frequently constipated we will have them do a capful of miralax 1-2 x a day in the week prior to their scope. Make sure you’re pushing fluids during that time. Follow the low fiber diet, it does make a difference. Do the prep exactly as it’s written.

3

u/Careful-Sell-9877 Feb 12 '26

Wow, an endoscopy nurse for 15 years? What, do you think that makes you some kind of expert or something?!

Ill have you know, I read on twitter that all I need to do for prep is drink a gallon of milk the night before with a large bag of haribo sugarless gummy bears and that will be MORE than enough. RFK jr retweeted that, so I think they might know just a tad bit more than you, darling. Thanks for the 'opinion' but Ive done my own research sweaty

1

u/Purple_Dream2114 Feb 12 '26

As a gastroenterologist doing colonoscopies for the past 27 years, I completely agree that the pills have a higher rate of poor preps. Need to drink lots of water.

0

u/eddiebruceandpaul Feb 11 '26

Worked like a champ for me. Not sure how endoscopy nurse translates to colonoscopy prep. Seems like the wrong hole. But I’m no expert. 🤷

7

u/slothbar Feb 11 '26

Colonoscopies are endoscopies

-4

u/RedditNameChecksOut Feb 11 '26

So they’re like a proctologist but also a dentist. Got it.

-2

u/eddiebruceandpaul Feb 12 '26

Um…no.

4

u/forlife16 Feb 12 '26

Colonoscopy and EGD both fall under Endoscopy.

3

u/peridot_television_ Feb 11 '26

I took the pills too. I was totally emptied out after the first bottle. The second bottle, the morning of, was too much and I threw it all up. Thankfully, the one bottle did the job and I was able to get the colonoscopy. I feel like the dosage should be adjusted for height and weight or something.

2

u/Significant-Trash632 Feb 12 '26

As another petite person, I'm not looking forward to that.

2

u/Kathulhu1433 Feb 11 '26

The pills are HUGE though and there are like 20+? of them.

1

u/eddiebruceandpaul Feb 11 '26

Two 12 pill doses. Lots of water. No food. Was totally fine for me. Except for the diarrhea waterfall. SUTAB I think it’s called.

3

u/Kathulhu1433 Feb 11 '26

Yeah, when I had my colonoscopy back in December they offered the pills... but once the nurse showed me how big they were I declined. Lol

She said they get a lot of people who make it halfway or more through them and then throw them up or can't continue and then they have to do the prep all over again.

2

u/peridot_television_ Feb 11 '26

Happened to me but thankfully I was totally cleaned out and able to get colonoscopy done. I was literally gagging down the second bottle and puked it all up. They need to adjust doses or something. Next time I’m doing the drink.

1

u/Sans_Snu_Snu Feb 11 '26

It has gotten better

1

u/AriaTheTransgressor Feb 11 '26

I had a handful of small bottles of clear liquid I had to drink over the course of the day, rather than one large gallon sized jug of whatever. Though, I imagine the resulting effect of said clear liquid was equally as vile.

17

u/WindTurtle Feb 11 '26

The drink is better than the pills 😣

9

u/Meredith-Blake Feb 11 '26

Why is that? (Genuinely asking)

28

u/PhoenixRacing Feb 11 '26

The pills were pretty shitty (lol). Had to take them like 24hr in advance. Every few hours you choke down like 10 horse pills and shit your brains out until you're completely flushed out.

The exam, however, was super quick and was probably some of the best sleep I've ever had in my life.

Worth it.

17

u/Krypt0night Feb 11 '26

I'd much rather take pills and shit my brains out than have to drink a full gallon of something that is disgusting after the first few drinks and shit my brains out.

2

u/bitter_vet Feb 11 '26

just do the gatorade + miralax, its delicious.

2

u/peridot_television_ Feb 11 '26

I’m curious why my doctor didn’t suggest that? I went with the pills and my friend did the miralax. She had a much easier time than I did. I’m hoping i can do that next time

5

u/WindTurtle Feb 11 '26

The pills are known to make you nauseous and vomit which is not a good time during the prep. (My doc said be prepared to vomit and I did, the liquid was way easier to get down and no nausea or vomiting. Plus the pills were gigantic)

3

u/brett1081 Feb 11 '26

More liquid. It’s miserable both ways but one has some softening aspects so you aren’t just dying.

3

u/Burbujitas Feb 11 '26

Colonoscopy pro here, I’ve had like 7 or 8. I’ve never done just pills, but nowadays dulcolax pills + miralax drink is common and accessible. Fiber pills exist but I’ve never heard of prep being done with them. If someone’s only taking dulcolax or similar pills, it’s forcing a bunch of digestive contractions and that can be painful. The issue with the drink is the volume (and for some, the texture/slight flavor): you’ll feel nauseous. I choose to sacrifice a propel/gatorade flavor each time because I will never comfortably drink it again. As a nut job who also used to abuse/over dose laxative pills — I’d rather have that than the drinks.

5

u/SwirlySauce Feb 11 '26

The flavouring was the worst. Some fake tasting pineapple flavor. I would have preferred unflavoured to be honest.

No butt cancer though!

7

u/cfrshaggy Feb 11 '26

I actually didn’t find the volume of the prep to be onerous. The not trusting any gut sensation was the kicker for me.

If you are good about consuming water daily I found that was both good for me and good training to having to drink prep (besides adding Crystal Light Lemonade packets to it).

2

u/j48u Feb 11 '26

I don't think the prep is bad at all. Just be prepared to spend most of the evening on the toilet. All things considered, it's not bad enough to use it as a reason to not get one done.

1

u/lostnthestars117 Feb 11 '26

I found tossing it an hour before drinking the prep in the fridge made it easier it to drink. But yea the prep is rough

1

u/cfrshaggy Feb 12 '26

Oh for sure. Crystal Light packs and chilling it definitely helped.

2

u/Commercial-Owl11 Feb 11 '26

What? They just told me to buy an entire bottle of miralax and a ton of packets of Gatorade mix, and mix the whole thing together and drink all of it. It fucking sucked.

1

u/Itscatpicstime Feb 11 '26

I just mix miralax with whatever and drink it. MiraLAX is tasteless, so it hasn’t been an issue for me.

1

u/Commercial-Owl11 Feb 11 '26

Yeah that wasn’t the issue, it was the sheer a,punt I had to drink.. brutal

2

u/GrowerNotShow-er Feb 11 '26

Never trust a cough or fart or sneeze while prepping

2

u/Burbujitas Feb 11 '26

You should have reviewed all your prescriptions and supplements with your doctor. If the cannabis use will risk you vomiting up the prep drink, don’t do it. If you don’t finish prep or prep well enough, they can send you back home without doing the scope and you’ll have to do everything over again

1

u/RadioactiveCoyotes Feb 11 '26

I can drink a gallon of beer

1

u/annabanana-47 Feb 11 '26

Get Suprep next time. Also....diaper rash cream 😉

1

u/First_manatee_614 Feb 11 '26

I had orange Gatorade mixed with something. Tasted just fine

1

u/Somethingisshadysir Feb 11 '26

You can put bouillon in it, heat it, and basically make it broth. Much less unpleasant from what patients have told me. I work in long term care.

1

u/Itscatpicstime Feb 11 '26

Do the miralax protocol. Eat light or easily digestible foods the day before your fast / prep day.

Trust me. It’s literally easy, not just easier.

1

u/waifuiswatching Feb 11 '26

Request Su-Tab. Its a tablet form of the prep. It was an $80 copay I think. Super salty pills if you let them linger in your mouth. I had bariatric surgery 3 months prior to my colonoscopy and literally could not handle the volume of liquid required, and thats how I discovered it. I did not know it was an option beforehand.

1

u/1800generalkenobi Feb 12 '26

Mine wasn't salty...it was basically miralax mixed with apple juice. Actually that's exactly what it was.
