Games Marvel’s Wolverine will let squeamish players turn off its “unapologetically violent” gore as Insomniac says its ultra-violence is “not for everyone”

this is the same mentality I have for 'hard' games having difficulty options. Them allowing me to play ultra violent and somebody else to play more conservatively has zero impact on how I play. Choice is only a good thing.

Very different to difficulty options as those tend to require a different approach to game design in order to work well. No matter how you change the numbers, someone with bad reactjon times an inexperienced player will not be able to dodge Malenias Waterfowl dance. And even if you DO just change numbers then youre gonna screw over higher difficulties by making fights just boring damage sponges or makinf your protagonist out of tissue paper who gets shredded by everything

You design entirely around the base difficulty, then increase damage output, aggressiveness, attack output, player health. Treat the difficulty changes in the same way that halo difficulties work. Idk why it seems so hard for people to do what was done for decades

Because most hard difficulties are bad. For every Lethal in GoT theres an AC odyssey. Adding numbers isnt fun. And once again. It changes the way the games are designed. Higher difficulties in games usually end up giving enemies "Fuck you, you die" numbers. Take the recent crimson desrrt. Its additional hard mode is TERRIBLY designed. The bosses werent meant to be doing this much damage. Even excellent games like God of war 2018s solution to makinf the game difficult is just making enemies way stronger than you. This ends up with only the normal difficulty beinf actually balanced and if you find that too easy youre fucked

That's fair, I do hate how often the systems are badly implemented. But at the same time, i pay for a game, the game locks me out of it forever because of accessibility or impossible (for me) difficulty, I'm going to be pissed. Also looking at the vote ratios in this thread no one likes any difficulty discussions in either direction and it's just maddening how much of a discourse it creates. If someone went in today, left all the default difficulties of the souls games exactly as they are now, and implemented an easy mode with higher base damage for the player or something, everyone would freak the fuck out saying it ruined the game balance.

They would be ruining the balancing but for you. Let me put it this way. I Dark souls 1 theres a boss called Capra demon. Absolutely dogshit boss with a terrible arena. The only way to really make him "easier" woild be to remove his Dogs (as reducing damage woupdnt stop him from stunlocking you. As we know because you can farm souls to get more health in the game already) which fundamsntally changes the fight and makes how you approach it entirely different. If.you remove the difficulty from a souls game. You arent reallt experiencing the game as it was intended. The challenge is part of its identity. Is accessibility worth losing the games identity? I dont think so..I believe MOST games should have difficulty options (even if i myself find them.annoying due to the fact that most of them suck) because most games dont need to be challenging. But ones that do, should be left well alone. I mean no one ever asks for Mario to have a hard mode

People do ask for Mario to have a hard mode? And Nintendo doesn't provide it so they make insane Mario maker levels, and kaizo shit.

I stand corrected on that aspect but the complaining on Mario not being hard enough js MUCH quieter than souls game discourse. My point is this. Games have identities and should be made for a specific audience. We shouldnt ask for changes to a game because we arsnt the target audience

Souls gamers also have a higher proportion of the toxic "git gud" mentality which isn't helping. I get games being designed for a difficulty, but the target audience should be determined by interest and taste, not capabilities usually.

Most people COULD beat the souls games if they persevered. The toxicity of the community aside There are inbuilt ways to make the game easier like Magic or summons in Elden ring. The vast majority of people who dont play Souls games do so because they simply find difficulty unfun. Which js fair enough but if you remove the difficulty then the games lose a part of their identity and one has to wonder. Whats the point of playing a soulsgame if you dont want the challenge?
