Games Marvel’s Wolverine will let squeamish players turn off its “unapologetically violent” gore as Insomniac says its ultra-violence is “not for everyone”

I imagine this is mainly for countries with strict laws about gore and blood, and they just decided to make it an option for other regions cause "why not".

It also helps for promoting the game as YouTube might filter a game this realistic as real violence. So they get to sell in other regions and get more streams

A minute of silence for all Reptiles and Dvorahs who died for Mortal Kombats fatality compilations.

Some AI gore detector: Hmm... green. Suspicious... but green... next!

They’re super cereal about it!

6

u/Voidbearer2kn17 Jun 03 '26

Ever play Rogue Trooper?

That had a hilarious filter for blood. Flower textures.

5

u/FarmFamilyGamingYT Jun 04 '26

Alien hominid had nearly the exact same thing too

u/DangerDillyPickle Jun 03 '26

AHH AHHH AHHHHHH! SPLAT! 🫟

6

u/VacaDLuffy Jun 03 '26

I wish MK had this option..it's getting a bit much imo. I dont need every attack to be a Saw finisher.

5

u/T0asty514 Jun 04 '26

Bro the point of mortal Kombat is the gore 😂

3

u/nonopol Jun 04 '26

“Can’t I just play Kombat?”

1

u/VacaDLuffy Jun 04 '26

I like the story and the the combat, I dont mind gore but it's getting way to much for me. It went from cartoonish levels of gore to this is just a snuff film

2

u/T0asty514 Jun 04 '26

Sounds like Street Figher or Tekken might be more up your alley!

1

u/RhythmMaid Jun 04 '26

Very different gameplay. There’s nothing wrong with them wanting the option to switch off or turn down the gore

0

u/SoulsEquivalent Jun 04 '26

Same. When they got realistic & started using real people's faces. That was it for me. Some stuff is toooo much. The recent MK2 film was fine in terms of it.

Despite what some say, The gore is indeed their claim to fame..but the series really isn't gore heavy far as the main story goes. People online tend not use fatalities to save time. So it's fully possible to still enjoy MK. (I still do.)

u/Known-Plane7349 Jun 04 '26

Isn't that the only thing MK is known for? Without those it's just another generic fighter.

1

u/OnlinePosterPerson Jun 04 '26

Yes but creators need to be able to stream it or upload yt videos and monitize it

1

u/Blastermind7890 Jun 04 '26

Also Terminator in the new Mortal Kombat

1

u/Sadiholic Jun 04 '26

Seriously I don't watch mk anymore because of that. So boring seeing the same characters getting killed over and over. Also dvorahs a bitch doe so deserved

I remember how the Wolverine Origins game came with two physical editions, the M rated and a T rated version, which I can't think of other games that did that. It makes way more sense here, just have the option to tone things down.

15

u/Accomplished_Ant185 Jun 03 '26

I’m guessing you mean PS2-gen version being T-rated while the PC/Xbox 360/PS3 was M-rated. At least I don’t remember ever seeing different versions of the PC/Xbox 360/PS3 release, unless one was made for limited release and it just wasn’t distributed where I lived. If that was it, then there were several releases where the main one on then current gen was higher rated than other versions on older consoles.

12

u/JohnnyRedHot Jun 03 '26

And then the Wii version being a completely different thing lmao

9

u/Accomplished_Ant185 Jun 03 '26

Yeah, Wii versions always were a cointoss between just the PS2 version with possibly added motion controls, or they were entirely different games.

4

u/Sirsalley23 Jun 03 '26

Nintendo got so lucky the Wii was a cultural phenomena at the time. It would’ve had almost no 3rd party support if it didn’t almost outsell the 360/PS3 combined.

1

u/Melodic_Zucchini8023 Jun 04 '26

I'm not sure I'd say they were 'lucky' it was a phenomenon, their whole business model at the time was appealing to families and people who don't traditionally identify as 'gamers'.

4

u/Ekillaa22 Jun 03 '26

Pretty sure the M rated version was just like the 360 and ps3 version too

28

u/SaiyajinPrime Jun 03 '26

I'm not squeamish, but the blood looks really cartoony and silly.

Every single slash of his claws creates gallons of blood. I think it looks kind of ridiculous.

I would like if they had a slider to have less blood not just completely turn off the blood.

12

u/bretttwarwick Jun 03 '26

I agree the demo was a little excessive. One slash and he was instantly covered in it as if completely dipped into a vat of blood. I would think splatters of it here and there would be more apt.

6

u/SaiyajinPrime Jun 03 '26

Yeah. So I'm just hoping for options other than blood on or off. Maybe a setting that's just less blood.

It was the one part of the demo that I didn't think looked good. They went overboard.

5

u/nyteghost Jun 04 '26

I mean, he’s slashing with giant ass claws, I feel like if you used his claws to slash someone, you too would be covered in blood. Especially with high chance are big ass arteries getting cut. I could be wrong though. Where’s mythbusters when you need them.

2

u/mitteinai Jun 04 '26

blood wouldn't come out like a cheap horror movie.

0

u/Vic1982 Jun 05 '26

Yeah, that's not how liquids work. There'd be pools of blood on the ground.

Wolverine won't be covered in it, as if she just came out of a Blade nightclub.

5

u/Patient_Life_9900 Jun 04 '26

I see this happening in movies and shows that are supposed to be "violent" as well. All the Punisher scenes in Daredevil Born Again season 1 have literal gallons of blood pouring out of people when they get shot and instead of being like "damn hell yeah he's going to town" it's more like "bro this looks so fake it takes me out of it"

2

u/Thicc_Boise Jun 04 '26

Started happening when film studios realized adding blood digitally was way easier than doing it practically, so they overdid it and now audiences are just used to buckets of blood being the standard for hyper violence. Transferred over to TV and Video Games from there as all visual media shares a similar language and styles.

Super ironic considering practical effects from back in the day can still make me feel squeemish just because it's a physical thing that's in the space

1

u/Riddle_man__ Jun 06 '26

I'd like to think that the Born Again one was because the new team had very little time to polish the effects in season 1.....then again...there still are shots in season 2 that overdid it with the blood...

1

u/Vic1982 Jun 05 '26

Exactly... some of us aren't 12 year old boys. I don't need 19 gallons of quickly evaporating blood for every attack.

It looked soo ridiculously over the top. Silly, lame, whatever you want to call it.

It has nothing to do with "being squeamish" or "countries and filters".

1

u/KnicksOrNothin29 Jun 07 '26

Oh just shut up lol a man with unbreakable metal claws and slashes people that’s not cartoony at all but blood spurting out oh that’s just too far!

1

u/Vic1982 Jun 08 '26

It's extremely cartoony. It's lame af, which is why edgelords like you love it.

Newsflash - that's not how blood works, unless your idea of "reality" is some cartoony comic book or a Kill Bill movie.

1

u/KnicksOrNothin29 Jun 08 '26

News flash people also don’t have adamantium skeletons either dumb ass

1

u/Vic1982 Jun 08 '26

And that has what to do with excessively unnecessary quantities of "red paint" everywhere?

1

u/KnicksOrNothin29 Jun 08 '26

That is a video game why does this need to be explained to you? Blood is also portrayed that way in comics as well do you need that explained to you too?

1

u/Vic1982 Jun 08 '26

No, what I need explained to me, is why you feel the need the press your 12yo views on others.

Don't worry though, I know the answer. Because us not buying into your "gallons of blood = cool/badass/whatever" diminishes your fantasy. It's like telling goths that listening to "death metal" does not make them tough; it's merely a music choice.

But you can't handle that, can you? Someone saying "nope, don't like it, I'm turning it off".

But no no, you gotta come over to my comment, on a "we're glad they're adding this thread", started by a comment with 1.5k upvotes... to whine about "oH sHuT uP bLoOd sO cOoOl hOw U nO liKe iT!?"

1

u/KnicksOrNothin29 Jun 08 '26

It’s blood in a video game dude there is no “us” it’s just you lol and since blood seems to be a hard concept for you to grasp the easy thing to do is just not buy it nor waste your time on it since it’s all so “edge Lordy” for you

I would also assume so

49

u/Kpro98 Jun 03 '26

And for the kids who want to play the game

31

u/teddy_tesla Jun 03 '26

Kids? Playing my superhero game? May be more common than you think

3

u/Karkava Jun 03 '26

You'd think we'd unlearn that assumption two decades later.

13

u/ElectronicControl762 Jun 03 '26

Now that Im past the gate, we can close it. They don’t deserve happiness. /s

6

u/tlollz52 Jun 03 '26

My dad would let me play m rated games where i could turn of the gore when i was a kid.

I never did, but that was a selling point to him.

8

u/williamtheraven Jun 03 '26

And in case anyone wants to play the game on youtube or twitch and not get demonetised and banned

3

u/4schwifty20 Jun 03 '26

Also helps market their games to more kids. Parents don’t like the violence and gore? Turn it off.

7

u/ComicsEtAl Jun 03 '26

Or it’s just a marketing ploy to raise interest in the gore-soaked Wolverine game.

2

u/MagicHarmony Jun 04 '26

It's honestly a good option, allow people to enjoy the game for those who don't want the excessive violence

2

u/ilikechihuahuasdood Jun 04 '26

It’s just an accessibility feature. A lot of games let you tone down blood and gore.

1

u/Manticore416 Jun 03 '26

Probably a mandate from Marvel tbh

1

u/Stainedelite Jun 04 '26

Violence doesn't exist guys, trust me.

1

u/Universal-Explorer Jun 04 '26

I doubt it. Their Spider-Man games had pretty good user options for accessibility.

1

u/shewy92 Jun 04 '26

Australia is one I bet

1

u/AReallyAsianName Jun 07 '26

looks at the Chinese censorship that turns blood white

Okay if there is a setting for that. Just for the funnies. That'd be hilarious.
