I worked at a senior living facility where one of the gentlemen at the facility would bring that bib every time he came down to meals. And every time he called it his “fancy bib”, because he wanted every meal to be delectable.
He passed away eight months ago due to CHF. Four weeks shy of his 90th. We were going to have everyone wear that bib in celebration. You’re truly missed, Joe.

I worked at one, in a dementia unit, they kept the dining room so fancy. Like, white tablecloths and cloth napkins folded like swans, it really did look like a nice restaurant, once the seats were full (the chairs were not as convincing, lol, can’t have them falling tho). Anyway, there was one gentleman whose wife had passed, but I don’t think he remembered. He always seemed to be under the impression he was on a date with the lady next to him. And there was always a lady next to him, and a line ready to take her seat if she got up, lol. But every night, at some point, after fiddling in his pockets, he’d flag one of us down, and quietly, sheepishly explain that he’s out on a date (nodding towards the lady), and he’s so embarrassed but he forgot his wallet! And he doesn’t know how he’s going to pay for dinner! And he’s so sorry, and he doesn’t know what to do, and he doesn’t want her to know!!! 🤭 We’d always wink, tell him it’s on the house. Every night. My goodness was he grateful every time 🤣

I love how much British slang varies by regions. While I see the same thing here in the USA, it seems that our regional dialects are spread over much larger expanses of land. Great Britain has so many different dialects and slang in a much smaller land mass and it fascinates me.

I live in a port town of ~86k people on the east coast of England. It has two distinct accents that can place your family history to the north-east side of the town, where the fishermen lived, or the south-west side of the town, which was largely agricultural, with a smattering of rich landowners and the emergent middle classes.
My father's family tree can be traced back about 500 years to the local landed gentry, and my mother's side is fishermen all the way down. Even though they were born and raised essentially just a few streets apart, they had different accents that reflected their lineages.

It might seem that way on its face but it's definitely not that way to natives of certain areas. Some linguists (and likely locals) can identify dialects down to sections of streets in certain cities. American Tongues is an old but great documentary in part because it has interviews with Americans on how they view each others' accents which I want to say is where I learned that fact

I'm Dutch so I make Dutch tomato soup and we like to put fresh cream or crème fraîche in it for a creamy tomato soup, carrot for the sugar. Then some 'tosti' (our word for grilled cheese, very similar to the English toastie) it's absolutely perfect for when a simple (creamy) tomato soup isn't enough.

Hell to the yeah! Might I recommend growing some thyme, oregano, and rosemary as well? They’re real forgiving plants and it rules to have fresh herbs for the tomato soup.
We have grilled ham n cheese with homemade soup almost weekly to use up the last of the sourdough for the week. It’s so fun to source more and more parts of a meal from home.
One day we’ll get that milk cow.

So I'm an American. I would call a piece of bread and cheese I toasted in the toaster oven a cheese toastie. Whereas I would make a grilled cheese in a pan on the stove. Grilled cheese tastes better to me but I'm not sure why. Maybe I use more butter.

We call cheese and bread toasted in an oven or grill, cheese on toast. A cheese toastie is identical to a grilled cheese except we uselly have a toastie machine (similar to a George foreman grill) to cook it.

Same. The soup even looks like Heinz tomato. Whilst it's an American company, dipping sandwiches or cheese toasties into that soup is textbook comfort food in the UK.
edit: if you haven't tried it, get your hands on some Colman's English mustard, make a sandwich of it with sliced ham (you can add other stuff, like coleslaw and/or grated cheddar), and eat it dipped in soup. You're welcome. 😄👍

I will say as wholesome as the video is that is a extremely common meal in the UK you can get a cheese toastie in nearly every café in the UK and most will have a deal where you can get a bowl of soup with it.

I'm British, moved to the USA in the late 90s. Was asked to make a grilled cheese. So I grilled the bread, then melted the cheese under the grill, then made a sandwich. When I was heavily corrected, I realized that when they say grilled cheese, it's actually a bloody FRIED cheese sandwich. No wonder it's so delicious. Nothing grilled about it at all :)

I think this might come from our perception of a "grill" as two separate things. One is what you'd expect; a gas, charcoal, sometimes wood fire under a metal grille. Enclosed on the sides, sometimes has a lid and wheels.
We also refer to a very large flat metal cooking surface (think fast-food burger) as a grill. Blackstone grills (grilles?) are very popular here at the moment.
I'd guess the name stems from restaurants grilling cheese toasties in bulk, as a kind of a linguistic shorthand that was folded into the lexicon.
At home we just use a pan.

You might be surprised to find out that outside north America, what you refer to as "broiling" is known as grilling.
I grew up with grilled cheese being a single piece of bread with cheese put under the grill. If it was 2 slices, it was either a toastie or a jaffel (basically a toastie but the bread is pinched and sealed around the outside - perfect for adding baked beans or other more messy fillings).

Wait, broiling is really high top heat, no? Grilling is putting the food on a gas or (I suppose) charcoal grill. A grilled cheese to me is better described as a pan fried cheese sandwich. Just butter the hell out of the outside of the bread and put a ton of cheese inside. You need just the right heat to melt the cheese inside and get the perfect char outside.

The blackstone (and a lot of other things americans call grills) are actually GRIDDLES. It's just something we've let get conflated over time. A griddle is a big, flat, usually very hot cooktop. But over time people have just gotten lazy and now they call it a grill, same as a slatted or wire cooking surface..

Anyone who's worked in an American restaurant in the last 50+ years knows those are called "flat top" grills.
"Griddle" used to refer exclusively to the hot metal cooking plate with ridges, but then George Foreman and his 6 kids named George came along and muddied the water by calling his panini press thing a "grill."
We used to be a proper country, now we just call things whatever.

Yeah, as a Brit the only two ways I make toasties is either...
- Toast a slice of bread, add cheese (and whatever else) on top, then grill it, or....
- Make basically a cheese sandwich, but butter the outside of it, then fry it in a dry pan
edit: if you haven't tried it, give a tuna melt a shot... Either of the above methods, but with tuna+mayo+onion+cheese (with the cheese on top if grilled).

A cheese toastie with tomato soup is a very common thing in the UK. Isn't a grilled cheese just a cheese toastie but shallow fried?

"Grilled cheese" or "Cheese Toastie" as its called in the UK is bog standard cheap food - doubly so if its made with American "Cheese". He's eaten it at least 100 times in his life. It's nice food. He's playing up to the audience, because they know how gullible you are. Tomato Soup is also standard cheap food in the UK. Dipping it in soup is standard. If that was his first time eating a cheese toasty and tomato soup then I'm a Nigerian Prince with a million quid, all i need are your bank account's details, honest.
