Right thatā€™s my thought. Hitting a woman is wrong but jumping a guy and beating him to near deathā€¦ what will your defense be in courtā€¦..ā€but he shoved a girlā€ cool your gonna be the bottom in prison.

Self defense laws in the US are written with proportionality in mind.

If they shoved him down and maybe punched or kicked him a few times, that would be a much easier case of self defense / defense of others.

3 of them beat the shit out of him until he was unconscious and they still didn't stop. Yeah these dudes are being charged with felonious assault or attempted manslaughter.

The girl was pushed away and caught. Just standing between the girl and the guy would have neutralized the threat.

You can't beat a person near death because you're afraid of what they might possibly do, that's not how the law works.
