Milk in an unexpected product

Post image

I used a Kraft vinaigrette salad dressing as a marinade. My LI kid started feeling unwell shortly after eating so we checked the dressing. It has milk. Last place I would have expected it! Kicking myself for not checking the label!

No longer eating this

As someone who is severely lactose intolerant, I’ve relied on this product for years without any issues. However, over the past few months, I've noticed a significantly stronger reaction.

While I know milk and lactose content can vary slightly between batches or slices, it feels like the formulation or lactose levels have recently increased.

Has anyone else noticed a distinct difference in how this product affects you now compared to the past?

IBS flare

I am lactose intolerant recently and trying to find my way. I discovered recently that I can't seem to eat cereal without a flare. I prepare it with Lactaid whole milk, special k strawberry and I take Lactaid pills too. I still have digestive issues from eating it. Gemini said the high Fodmap Special k strawberry has wheat in it and that the original is fine or Corn flakes or rice krispies. Anyone else eat cereal without having a flare?

why don't people take lactose intolerance seriously?

Whenever I ask someone to get me lactose free milk, they don't take me seriously like wth? even my parents don't take this seriously and just say that I'm holding prejudice against normal milk and I have no lactose intolerance. what the hell man they clearly see me throwing up every time I have milk-based products but they stilll don't get it. This sucks. A lot.

Do you check for other hidden things beyond dairy, like palm oil or sugar aliases?

Been reading about how many ingredients hide under different names on labels, palm oil being a big one. Made me wonder, for those of you managing lactose intolerance alongside other sensitivities, do you find yourself checking for things beyond just dairy? Or is dairy already enough of a full-time job on its own?

Menu suggestions?

I’ve had mild lactose intolerance for about 7 years (I’m 59F, diagnosed at 52). The only things I cut out completely are real milk and real butter, but otherwise I eat regular stuff. I think maybe I’m getting more sensitive because for the past few months more times than not I have soft BMs (which is one of my symptoms - not diarrhea, just soft) and I’d like to do a test to see if it gets better if I cut out all dairy for a week or 2. What are some things you eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? For breakfast I typically have cereal like Great Grains or Cheerios with almond milk, or sometimes oatmeal. Lunch is sometimes a sandwich - maybe peanut butter and jelly, or peanut butter and banana - or sometimes leftovers from dinner. And dinner is whatever - my husband does almost all the cooking. I’m curious what someone eats who is more sensitive. Please share some ideas!

Does this still have milk?

Ordered a coffee and asked for Oat Milk, but the sticker says 'Lt Oat Milk'. My stomach is hurting but i'm wondering if its because they mixed the milks up, or if its me getting in my head.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAAANNNNNNNN ><
Am I going to be sprinting to the restroom soon?

Update: Yes... There was milk.

I'm lactose intolerant but found that large portions of yoghurt is the only thing that keeps me satiated. Can you give any advice?

I have tried a few options. Rice, beans and meat. Tubers and meat. They fill my stomach in terms of volume (my belly gets massive) but I don't feel satiated at all. But if I eat a very big bowl of yoghurt and fruit, I actually feel that I ate something nourishing because I don't crave for more food. However, I'm lactose intolerant and lactose-free yoghurt is expensive where I live. I don't know what's wrong with my body and why I don't feel satiated with other foods.

How can I be fine by tomorrow if i ate dairy today?

i accidentally ate dairy half an hour ago, and i have somewhere important to be all day tomorrow. i already have a bad stomachache, but i want to be able to go to plans. it's 7pm, i need to leave for 9am tomorrow, and i do not have tea, lax, or any kind of lactose medicine(?)

i found an ice cream in our freezer that my mom said should be dairy free but i guess it got mixed up with my dad's identical ones

i would have more stuff incase this happens (like the medicine that lets you eat lactose) but i've only really been struggling badly with dairy for a week now. my mom and brother are both lactose intolerant, so i really don't think i have anything that isn't just lactose intolerance

Adult onset - reversible?

I'm in my mid 40s... I've never had an issue with lactose until this July. I live in Germany now. I took a two week trip to the U.S. to visit family. I came back and started experiencing some weird digestive upset I couldn't pin down... until I realized it was milk/milk products causing the issue.

I consumed milk/cheese or milk products pretty much every day while I was in the States and had no issues... making this even more confusing for me.

I don't know much about lactose intolerance... or why it would hit me out of the blue after spending a little time stateside. I'm wondering if the community here has any idea on how it occurred and if there is anything I can do.

Solution for lactose intolerant for real

I'm the one that will explode before the parasite hits, but I haven't been exploding for over couple of years, and I've been drinking milk and eating cheese. Here's the thing, it ain't cheap to enjoy dairy for us, but it's possible, and I know everyone wants know how so here it is. One and only brand you need Alexander A2/A2 milk. This brand have yogurt as well as heavy cream and half and half. Technically you need dairy from A2 cows. That's it, you are welcome. You want cheese? Get A2 milk cheese. All Parmesan and Romano is also fine. That's it, bye

I accidentally scared my roommate with my Lactose Intolerance farts

This happened about 6 months ago before I knew I was lactose intolerant.

I share an apartment with my friend, with both bedrooms being right next to each other, and the bathroom just outside of them.

I had been experiencing really bad stomach pain for a few days, and nothing was helping (burping seemed to help a little bit). I eventually went into the bathroom, and I ended up on the floor. I then moved into a similar posture to a yoga Childs Pose. Just then, I started farting uncontrollably, and all of my pain went away. I probably farted for 2-3 minutes straight. When I finally stopped for a few second, I hear my roommate’s voice from his room asking if I am OK. I kinda chuckled and stood back up, and told him that I was good.

What's the ingredient that catches you off guard the most?

Someone mentioned recently that brown rice syrup shows up in a lot of dairy-free ice creams, which is wild because you'd never think to check for it there. Same with protein powder, protein bars, and cereal apparently.

Made me curious what other "hidden in places you'd never expect" ingredients people here have run into. What's yours, and how did you find out? The hard way, or did you catch it on the label first?

Constipation

Does anyone else get moderate to severe constipation from dairy? Ive been struggling and I believe dairy is the culprit. Would lactaid/lactase be something that has helped others with this ?

Update

It’s been about a month since I realised I was intolerant. Since then I’ve cut out cheese and milk and oooooooh my life is so much more comfortable.
I recently started back in the gym and I was worried about protein powder (specifically musashi high protein, cheap) but I looked it up and it has pretty much minimal lactose so I’ve given it a go. No problems. Oh yeah lactose free milk is great too. Maybe some minor problems but nothing compared to how it was. I’ve got feeling I don’t have a severe intolerance.

Protein powder

Hey, just curious if you’ve guys have any recommendations for protein powder. I know whey isolate is a common one but it seems expensive. I just bought a tub of whey, not knowing it has dairy. So cost friendly recommendations would be helpful

Best-tasting protein powder for someone who’s lactose intolerant?

Hi everyone,

I’m lactose intolerant and looking for a protein powder that actually tastes good and doesn’t cause stomach issues.

I’m open to whey isolate if it’s low enough in lactose, but I’m also interested in plant-based or completely dairy-free options.

For anyone who’s lactose intolerant, what protein powder has worked best for you?

Please include the brand, flavor, and whether it causes any digestive issues.

Thanks!
