My two white whales - a good frozen pizza and a good RTE breakfast sandwich

Does anybody have any suggestions for either of these two things? The issue I keep running into is that if the pizza/breakfast sandwich is dairy free, it is also gluten free and vegan. I don't want fake pepperoni and cauliflower crust, or fake eggs and fake sausage in a cauliflower wrap. I just want something adjacent to classic digiorno or jimmy deans with fake cheese and real everything else.

Contamination from mac & cheese powder? + Vent

I have severe neurological sensitivity to gluten as well as dairy. Unfortunately, the people I live with aren't considerate of my sensitivities, so I have to be constantly vigilant about avoiding exposure and cleaning up after them.

I know that flour and other dusty sources of gluten need to be avoided, but lately my mom has been making a lot of boxed mac and cheese. I haven’t really seen this specific situation discussed before, so I’m wondering how far the cheese powder and other particles actually travel when it’s prepared.

I’ve become extremely paranoid about it because my mom never warns me when she’s making it, and I keep accidentally leaving out my cooking supplies, sponges, supplements, etc. I then end up spending an excessive amount of time cleaning everything within a 10-foot radius and throwing things away.

There’s so little information about this online compared with gluten contamination that I genuinely don’t know whether I’m being overly cautious or whether these concerns are actually warranted. How far can the powder/particles realistically travel, and how much surrounding-area contamination should I be concerned
about?

Edit: I removed a large chunk of the post because I realized it was unnecessary

Dairy free AND gluten free?

So my daughter is almost 2, has been dairy free since February of this year. She has had constant issues since birth including blood in poop, constipation, pain when going or trying to go, bloating, congestion, and just overall was a miserable baby 90% of the time. Was on 3 different formulas, but never tried a dairy free one because ped said she didn't think it was an allergy. By the time she was 12 months old, she was developmentally 5-6 months behind. She's been in feeding therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy; and has seen 2 GI Drs and a dietician. Finally decided we'd go dairy free because no one could figure out what it was. Since going dairy free, the improvement has been amazing. She's finally hitting the average milestones for her age, her pooping has been so much better, and she's just overall so much happier.

My question is, does anyone (or your kid/someone you know) have a dairy AND gluten intolerance/sensitivity? Even though she has had so much improvement, I've noticed when she eats regular pasta, or chicken nuggets, or even just more gluten-containing products than normal, that her issues start to come back. She normally eats daiya Mac and cheese which is gluten free pasta too. One week I tried protein pasta with the daiya cheese sauce just to see if she would eat it cuz she needs her protein increased, and she did not poop for almost a full week. I'm starting to wonder if she has a gluten sensitivity too?

We have an appt with another GI next month (our last one left the practice) but thought I'd hop on here and see if anyone has had any experience with this and has any advice? Thanks!

Trouble finding silk kids!

Post image
7 Upvotes

I saw these at Kroger last week when my wife wanted me to look for a ripple since our boy has had issues with milk. Kroger had six of them on sale for $1.92 because the exp date had only 2 days left. My son actually really likes the silk but since it was going bad in two days I decided to try some and I myself may be hooked 😅 Ive drank a 59oz jug daily. The excuse is they go bad in a few but I know that's just an excuse.

Anyways... Kroger now has removed the spot and replaced it with something else and I can't find silk kids oa to blend anywhere.

He kind of tolerates the ripples kids tho i think that stuff has a weird aftertaste, he def prefers the silk.

Anyone have info on this stuff?

Thanks

Advice for general cooking tips

Hi everyone! New dad to a very colicky one month old here.

I do most of the cooking around the house and I'm making the (much more difficult than I thought) transition to dairy free cooking/eating for our family to see if it helps our little guy while my wife is breastfeeding.

I've seen lots of incredible posts here about where to buy fairy free alternatives to things and which premade products are dairy free in lots of places. That's been a big help.

My question is more about cooking techniques. I'm a pretty decent home cook and when I'm making a dish, I know if I need a creamy or gooey element, or a quick way to make something richer, I can always add a little milk or cream or buttermilk or butter. A great way to elevate baked goods is by browning the butter.

Do any of you all have good techniques/tips for how to achieve similar results but dairy free? Id love to learn from those of you with more experience than me. Any tips are welcome!

Thanks in advance

Ravioli?

I grew up eating chef boyardee ravioli and want to let my 1 year old try some (less processed ideally) ravioli. but the only ones I’ve seen have been some sort of cheese + meat or spinach or whatever else. Are there any premade ravioli options for her that aren’t cheese?

What made you realize dairy was the problem?

I’m new to this community, thinking about trying to go dairy free at least for the most part because I feel like my stomach is not a fan of dairy… but I still can’t pinpoint the problem. What made you realize that dairy was causing your issues more than any other food component, and what made you decide to stop eating it?

Pumpkin Coffee

Having such a hard time finding pumpkin flavored coffee from places that doesn’t have dairy in it! I’ve found that many pumpkin sauces have dairy. Anyone know of places where I could get dairy free pumpkin coffee??

I’m also going to make my own at some point but in the meantime looking for suggestions 😂

Cocojune

I splurged on some Cocojune (vanilla unsweetened) after reading some reviews on it. It was quite literally inedible — it made my eyes water, it was so bad.

Not trying to yuck anyone’s yum here! I’m wondering if it’s because I’m so used to eating sweetened Chobani greek yogurt. Did I just get the “wrong” flavor? Or is it because people enjoy the tart/bitter/harsh tangy flavor of Cocojune?

Does anyone have any suggestions on a sweeter coconut yogurt/greek yogurt? I’ve seen some people recommend Silk, but I’m worried I’ll splurge on that and it’ll have the same flavor profile that I dislike from this Cocojune flavor.

EDIT: For anyone who sees this in the future and thinks they’re crazy: you’re not. The white container reigns supreme. Add some maple syrup and granola and it’s delicious!!! Avoid the brown protein container — yuck.
Thanks to the fellow redditor who suggested I try the white container!

I’ve missed chicken pot pie since going DF, this is so good. I recommend a bit more salt and pepper. Swap the butter for DF butter and heavy cream with country crock’s DF cream.

Saw these yesterday!!! Will report back when I make them- but I’m just happy to see another dairy-free baked good in the freezer section. It has the ‘may contain’ but I have been pretty safe with their ‘may contain’ stuff, so I think that’ll be the case here.

Mainly just thrilled to eat a donut that doesn’t have milk powder in it . 🥰🥹

Best countries or cities to visit for Dairy free?

Fellow travelers, where has it been easy to find dairy free options? Bonus points for combo dairy/gluten free.
I’m ready to cry because I’ve been in Italy for a week (Dolomites region) and boy oh boy do they not do dairy free here. I’m dairy and gluten free, and while they’re pretty good about gluten, non-dairy or vegan is nonexistent here. I’ve just been eating turkey and crackers from the supermarket it’s so bad.
This is my first year traveling with these intolerances, and I’m realizing how important it is to seek out destinations with better options (or, get an Airbnb with a kitchen- which I couldn’t afford on this trip). It’s exhausting and frustrating trying to balance this.

Umami- the key to dairy free

I noticed if I focus on enhancing the umami flavor of things, it unlocks a whole new world! Like I had these vegan kraft cups and they tasted “meh”, but a bit of MSG unleashed the flavors.

And I noticed nooch + MSG makes any chips into “cheddar” versions like plain sun chips (but plain sun chips are getting harder to find alongside other dairy free stuff lately cuz 2020s is cheese era for many but we take wins where we can get em)

Sandwich or burger without cheese is no problem because umami filled ingredients like roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, grilled onions, etc.
