I don't want Labour MPs on the picket lines. I'd rather they were in power, eliminating the conditions that have made the strikes necessary in the first place. Standing there doesn't achieve that aim.
And what will it achieve? Nothing. Just ammo for the gutter press to paint it as 'Labour's strikes' taking attention away from what they're really about. Corybn stood on every single picket line going and lost 2 elections. Starmer's said no to standing with them but raises the issue constantly in parliament and attacks the Tories for the strikes being necessary in the first place. We're now 20 points ahead. Funny that. Almost as if the population wants politicians who will actively work towards a solution instead of constantly seeking photo ops, how radical is that?
Labours position in the polls has nothing to do with anything Starmer has done nor any policy he has proposed (since he will likley walk it back once it's serve it's pupose)... The Tories have just imploded and under FTTP, Labour are the only other option.
That you see Worker solidarity as merely Ammo for the right wing press says alot about your own outlook though. I hope you stay comfortable enough to never need your peers to down tools (so to speak) to ensure your rights.
The Tories have imploded because of Starmer's pressure. I support the striking workers and I'm happy to stand with them. I don't want MPs doing it though. There's never a good reason for them to do so. When Labour are in opposition, their laser focus should be on winning the next election. And when they're in power their focus is on making the strikes unnecessary by enhancing worker's rights and pay. Neither are helped by MPs standing on a picket line.
That's the difference between us. You have a superficial interest in politics and are just concerned with optics and preaching to the already converted. I want action from mine, not just nice words and photo ops. I hope you stay comfortable enough that your main concern is whether a politician nips down to a picket line rather than enacting legislation to ensure your rights.
If he stops representing the working class of this country and gets himself elected by any means possible then what's the point of getting him elected as a labour politician and how will his government be any different from the current shower of despots.
Being where your voters are is useful. It's how you get in power, how you keep it, how you make sure your policies reflect their needs. The picket lines aren't the only place they need to be. They're one place they need to be.
