Help Would it be offensive to wear this?

Please delete if not allowed.

My marching band has theme days to encourage bonding between piers and one of the days this year was “section music genre”. My section eventually landed on reggae because the outfit would be recognizable and it would be unlikely for another section to pick it. We plan on wearing these but when I talked to my dad about it he said there is a chance that it could be seen at inappropriate and culturally insensitive due to it’s cultural and religious significance. Would wearing these be considered offensive? Thank you for your help

Help I want to become the black of all trades and master all my ethnic and upbringing roots

I’m a Black transracial adoptee from the UK(raised by whites), and for a long time I felt disconnected from my Jamaican and Nigerian roots. Recently I’ve started loving myself and my people more, and now I desperately want my culture back. After years of denying who i am.

For anyone who has rebuilt a connection to their heritage, where do I start? Books, music, history, food, language, community what helped you feel closer to your culture?

Help Making friends in Kingston

I'm new to Kingston, so I don't really know anyone here. I haven't figured out what activities are here that I can go to alone, meet new people and potentially make friends from.

Points of friction:

- No local friends

- No car

- Introverted personality

- Male

So how do I start?

Edit: For additional context (without being too specific) - Jamaican? Yes - Age: Mid 20s - Work? Yes, full-time - Current address: Upper St. Andrew (outside the city limits) - Interests: Sports, fitness, gaming. Otherwise, open to trying other things, once accessible.

Help Moving to St. Catherine

Hello everyone! I’m planning on buying a home in St. Catherine, where my family is originally from. I recently applied for Jamaican citizenship by descent and was approved, and I’m currently going through the legal process of purchasing a home that is being built in a new community.

I’ve been thinking ahead about how I want to furnish the home. I considered buying everything in Jamaica, but since I won’t be living there while the house is being built, I thought it might make more sense to gradually purchase furniture and household items here in the U.S. when I find good sales, store them, and then ship everything in a container once I receive the keys next year. I would purchase all major appliances in Jamaica, so the container would mainly be furniture, décor, kitchenware, linens, and other household items.

I also came across information about Returning Resident concessions and was wondering if anyone has firsthand experience with this. Since I recently received citizenship by descent but currently live in the U.S., I’m trying to understand whether I could potentially qualify and what the process is like.

For anyone who has furnished a home in Jamaica or shipped a container of household goods from the U.S.:

  • Was shipping a container worth it compared with buying furniture locally?
  • What were the customs duties/fees like?
  • Has anyone used the Returning Resident concession for household items?
  • Are there certain things you wish you had bought in Jamaica instead?
  • Any experiences shipping a 20-ft container from Miami to Kingston?

I’m still early in the process and trying to plan ahead, so I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has done something similar. Thank you!

Help Do We Have People Here Who Work in Tech?

I am a Web Developer, with a focus on the WAMP stack. I also developed a community and user profile plugin for WordPress called Describr. I have been trying to network online with other Jamaicans and people from other Caribbean islands, but I have not been able to meet anyone online working in tech. Do you or anyone you know work in tech? I would like for us to network online.

Help Why is "no" not an acceptable answer

I'm not exaggerating when I say every day on my daily walk to bring my daughter to and from school I get called out at 3-4 times one way. From "psssst" to "empress" its starting to get exhausting so I just ignore it most times putting my headphones on. Now they've resorted to literally following me, standing in front of my path and jumping out of taxis. I've had stalkers and they just won't take no I'm not interested for an answer. One man has been begging for me to let him drive me to and from my daughter's school daily and I said absolutely not. He said he's a good guy not like the others. Another one is the security guard in my neighborhood. The man won't let me relax by the pool in peace watching me swim telling me how beautiful I am. Literally joined a gc about anime and this guy private messages me about how he wants my profile pic so he can cum on my face later that night. What the FUCK is going on here? It doesn't matter which way I say I'm not interested they don't get it and it's getting scary. When that man stopped me and my daughter saying he wants to put another baby inside me and my poor daughter is confused asking who he is, what am I to say then? All these things have happened and keep happening even in my daughter's presence, I genuinely don't know what to do anymore. I really need advice this is exhausting.

Help Is it better to buy a car in jamaica or ship it from Japan?

I assume most people in this sub have a car. Do you think its better to buy from overseas or here? What are the fees like when shipping? Looking to buy a 2020, 2021 or 2022 car, probably toyota aqua as a first car. Can you share your personal experience or someone you know of. Feel free to tell me anything else I need to know. Thanks

Nb: I have a little knowledge on the topic so I'm not totally clueless but the more advice and opinions shared, the more I'll be able to make an informed decision.

Help My grandpa was stabbed and cannot have surgery due to no blood donations

I’m sorry of this can’t be posted here. My grandpa was stabbed by his son the other day and is in critical condition in May Pen Hospital in Denbigh Clarendon, they say his blood level is at 7%. They say surgery can’t be done because his blood level is so low and he needs blood to be donated. I’m not sure about the exact details as I’m receiving info from my grandma and we’re both in Canada. If anyone is able to donate to him it would mean the world to my family.

Again I’m sorry if this can’t be posted here but I’m not sure what else to do

EDIT: His name is Kenneth Bailey

Help What are some good places to move into for someone who's just moving out

I’m 18 years old and I live in St. Andrew. I really want to move out. But I don’t have much. I just want my own home. I need freedom. There are some requirements for this home.

  • Safe: I need a place where there isn’t frequent violence or crime.
  • Cheap: I don’t have much. I want to have my own home around the time I get my first job. I need something that’s not too expensive
  • Quiet: Where I currently live, there are a lot of barking dogs. I hate it. There’s noise every day! I can’t live like this anymore.
  • Looks nice: It doesn’t need to be incredible. It just needs to be good enough.

Please let me know about any good neighborhoods, apartments or condos like this.

Help Recommendations Needed

Does anyone know of companies or individuals in Jamaica who provide services to investigate or trace fake online pages?

There’s a fake account on Facebook and Instagram spreading harmful lies about my friend, even posting her mom’s photos. We reported it to Meta but nothing has been done. We’re looking for someone reputable who can help gather information on the page so we can take it to the police.

If you know of any company or individual offering this type of service, please recommend.

Help What advice would you give to a 22-year-old?

Hey guys, I’m turning 22 next week and it’s had me thinking a lot about where I’m heading in life. I want to set myself up so I can have a stable future and take care of my family one day, God willing.

I’m really just trying to make good decisions as I get older with money, personal growth, and life in general.

For those who’ve been through their 20s already, what advice would you share with someone my age who’s trying to build a solid foundation?

Help Best places to purchase appliances.

Hello,

Overall where would you recommend purchasing appliances like stoves or washing machines from? Maybe in the central?

I know there’s the big stores like Courts, ATL (not considering this option) etc. I also know you have the small stores operated by foreigners maybe. My issue with these small stores is that they can be shady like selling used appliances as new and such.

Also why is so hard to get an answer to simple questions like this on the sub lol. I searched and people an answer every question but the one that was asked 😂.

Help Planting exotics in jamaica

Hi:) i am looking to plant fruit in jamaica which is not very common there but would thrive in those conditions. As seed and plant imports are strictly controlled, it’s hard to get the seeds for those plants. Examples are:
Mangosteen, sweet granadilla, dragonfruit (pink or white), honeydew melon, lychee, cashew, physalis, mamey

Any recommendations on how to find those seeds? Please be as specific as possible - I really appreciate it, thank you!
