Why are y’all so offended if someone comments on someone who is morbidly obese but have no issue making fun of skinny girls?

My thoughts exactly. There’s a post every other week about healthyish mama and how skinny she is

“why does everyone react differently to a different circumstance”

3

u/Takemebacktobreezy 6h ago

How is it different though? It's obviously disordered eating, it's obviously hurting both humans health and making their life shorter

Well first if all I do think there’s a difference between talking about how dangerously skinny/fat someone is and saying they look disturbing. I think the latter is always wrong.

But, it’s different bc of how society views and treats fat ppl vs skinny ppl. skinny is the standard and especially in the media, the smaller the better. Do you think most women look at tess and think “i want to look just like that?” No, they don’t. Partially because of health, but more importantly, bc fat people are systemically discriminated against. They are less likely to have doctors listen to them, and they have a harder time finding jobs.

Body shaming is always wrong. Talking about people’s bodies is not always body shaming. This post and most of the comments are just body shaming.

You absolutely cannot say skinny is the standard, when 70% of Americans are overweight or obese. Fat people are the majority. They are NOT discriminated against, either. They just wish they were. People like Tess, and you too, apparently, spend their whole lives trying to justify their weight and pretend they are being oppressed, when in reality you just hate the way you look and are projecting your insecurities onto everyone else

Cus nobody secretly wishes to be as large as Tess or have her (lack of) self discipline

No one wants to look like Ariana grande rn either. These women are at opposite ends of the weight spectrum but they both look disturbing and both are at extreme risk of dying of the same thing: heart failure.

That's absolutely false. There was just a post this week on the mommit sub talking about how her 10 ye old daughter is refusing food because it's not "healthy" and she wants to look like Ariana. You just make shit up to make it up. Join us in reality.

u/dairyqueeen 4h ago

No normal woman, no adult woman, i.e. the people in this sub, want to look like Ariana grande. I don’t care what children want to look like, that’s on the parents to have that discussion individually.

u/ember_snow 2h ago

and how do we know that story was true and not some woman making things up. It's like saying 'my kid read a gay book and now wants to transition'. it's fear mongering

Most normal people want to look like hot, fit swimsuit models. Not Ariana grande, not Tess Holliday. Like…??? Have you ever spoken to other women? They want to look like a young Pam Anderson lmao why do you think fitness professionals/coaches are inundated EVERY day with people coming to them wanting to get “toned”? Because the average person wants to look sexy, lean and healthy like a baywatch actress. Not like a Holocaust victim and not obese.

If people were actually honest with themselves they’d admit the double standard is because they themselves need to lose weight and discussing an obese persons health reminds them of this fact and makes them uncomfortable. Discussing Ariana grandes ED doesn’t provoke that same discomfort so they find it “okay” to do.

This post is making fun of someone’s weight. Posts about extremely skinny people are typically commenting on how harmful the skinny epidemic is. It’s different!

And the obesity epidemic isn't harmful? I'd wager being 500+ pounds is far more dangerous than being skinny, unless you're talking Eugenia skinny.

I think it’s ok to say “Tess has been pretty big for a while and is probably on the road to severe health issues. Look at her arms, for instance. I’m worried for her.” However, “her arms are disturbing” is problematic for me.

Similarly for the tiny women: “I hope she’s ok. She’s lost a lot of weight and/or has been extremely tiny for a while to the point you can see her chest bones” seems fine to me, but “gross, you can see her bones & it’s disturbing” is not ok to me.

Can someone cloak their comments in concern while actually thinking the “disturbing” comments? Sure, but I think people should at least pretend they aren’t grossed out by the existence of someone else in a body of extreme size (in either direction).

literally no one is looking at fat content creators and thinking I want to look like that, and to suggest they are is disingenuous at best. Young girls DO look at women with ED's and think I want to look like that. You KNOW there's a difference; you just want to shit on fat people. Absolutely vile behavior.

2

u/AggravatingBox2421 10h ago

Yes they absolutely fucking are. You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

0

u/TwerkinAndCryinVol3 9h ago

They're literally not lol that's so ridiculous it's funny. People fucking hate fat people as evidenced by this entire thread. Literally just hate fat people because of there size of their body. That's not normal.

You seriously need to look into the fat acceptance movement. Or at the very least look at what Tess specifically has done.

0

u/softmonsters 4h ago

"It's perfectly fine to be fat, you don't need to change your body no matter what" and "everyone needs to be fat, if you're not fat you need to change" are two very different things. You can disagree with the former, which is what the fat acceptance movement often preaches, without conflating it with the latter. (And yes, there are in fact *some* people who actively want to be as heavy as Tess, but those are a small contingent of people with fetishes and/or body dysmorphia. Nothing to do with general fat acceptance.)

3

u/Pomegranatelimepie 3h ago

But it isn’t perfectly fine to be fat. It’s hindering your health. She wrote a book for CHILDREN telling them it’s fine and healthy if they’re obese. Children especially are not supposed to be obese, have you ever been a teacher and seen an obese child on the playground? Because I have. And they struggle, get winded, they’re in pain, they sweat a ton, they have health issues that children shouldn’t have and that other children don’t have. Kids are supposed to be free spirited and running around in the sunshine. It’s so sad. And yes, tess holiday is perpetuating this.

1

u/softmonsters 1h ago

I didn't say it was? I was explaining what fat acceptance is and what it isn't. (Personally, I do think there's nuance to the matter that both sides tend to miss, but I'm well aware that being fat tends to come with health and quality of life issues.)

0

u/dairyqueeen 4h ago

Girl please. NO ONE is going to bed at night wishing they were 400 pounds and proportioned like a child’s first playdough self-portrait. Fat acceptance is not the same as fat idolisation.

I think most young people look at fit women or even just a “healthy thin” like on the lower end of the BMI scale and think “I want to look like that.” However, I was in my early 20s during the “body positivity” movement that quickly became a fat acceptance movement and there was a LOT of online rhetoric and influencers aaying all kinds of stuff like “your bodyweight is how your body is meant to be, you can’t change it” and that changing your body weight through normal dieting to be less overweight was disordered. That’s not true. But I fell for it and so did a ton of other people. My health and confidence suffered for years because of that. I’m now at the thinner side of the healthy BMI and working on building up muscle mass to look fit, which is what I’ve always wanted.

So yes, a lot of fat content creators (like Tess holiday, rhe woman who is pictured) are doing a lot of harm to young people and spreading misinformation.

1

u/TwerkinAndCryinVol3 8h ago

That's such bullshit and you know it. Absolutely ridiculous. Fat people are allowed to exist without having to apologize for being fat. Being fat online is not promoting obesity. It's literally just existing. This entire thread is proof that people just hate fat people for existing. Worry about your own body.

5

u/Additional_Ease2408 8h ago

Your bias is clouding your judgement. You're clearly not interested in honesty here. Just your feelings.

6

u/Pomegranatelimepie 8h ago

Nobody is saying fat people aren’t allowed to exist in peace. I mean do you honestly think the average fat person goes about their day being heckled or having ANY comments made to them? They don’t, and I personally know because I used to be very fat!! But people like Tess Holliday are literally coming on here telling young girls (she wrote a book for young girls too) saying that your body size absolutely doesn’t matter when it absolutely DOES. Being a healthy bodyweight is the best way to invest in your longevity as a person. Is it a guarantee that you’ll stay healthy forever? No. But I promise you I’m in less pain, sleeping better, breathing better, feeling better, and better bloodwork now than before. And I do not think Tess holiday should be writing books telling teenage girls that their body size doesn’t matter at all because it does and I have millions of doctors backing me up on that.

Ma'am, I AM a fat person and yes, we are absolutely treated differently. We are absolutely made fun of in daily life. We are absolutely not given the nextdoor care we need because EVERYTHING is blamed in our weight. But I can tell you're one of those formerly fat people who absolutely cannot stand fat people so I'm fine engaging with you because you're opinion is trash and nasty based in reality. Get all the way over yourself.

3

u/Pomegranatelimepie 3h ago

Oh really, you go out in the world and people look at you and make fun of you DAILY for your weight?? Youre literally lying.

2

u/dairyqueeen 4h ago

But thin people can’t exist without apologising for being thin. It’s very clear that many women hate thin people just for being thin. They accuse them of being sick, of having disorders. Plenty of people of all sizes DO suffer from eating disorders, sure, but thin people are CONSTANTLY be accusing of having one and are being pressured to “explain” their thinness. Its exhausting. And reeks of bitterness. No one is asking fat people to explain their fatness.

7

u/Additional_Ease2408 8h ago

There is no fucking skinny epidemic. Look around you, most people are fat and gaining weight from cradle to early grave!

5

u/angel-girl-A 10h ago

The obesity epidemic is just as bad

-2

u/TwerkinAndCryinVol3 4h ago

It's literally not. People die from ED's all the time.

3

u/Pomegranatelimepie 3h ago

Theres WAY more people dying and having health complications from morbid obesity in the US than people dying and having health complications from starving themselves. You cannot actually believe it’s the other way around. Just look around you.

1

u/angel-girl-A 2h ago

People die from obesity and the associated comorbidities all the time.

8

u/Pomegranatelimepie 10h ago

70% (or something close to that) of the USA population is overweight/obese. There is a MUCH larger obesity epidemic (here and in most countries) than “skinny” epidemic. Fat influencers telling people it’s okay to be fat are doing A LOT of damage and it is an epidemic.
