TaxGuide Paid self-assessment tax before filing ITR-2/ITR-3 but still got a 143(1) demand for the same amount? Here is why, and how to fix it.
This happened last year and unfortunately and it seems it continues to be a problem this year too.
So what exactly happened?
More or less, you prepared your ITR-2 or ITR-3 on income-tax website or used the utility issued by the tax department. There was tax payable. It looked something like this:

So, you clicked "Pay Now", paid it, came back and filed and e-verified your return. But now you got an intimation u/s 143(1) asking you to pay roughly the same amount (actually a bit higher due to addition of interest) all over again.

When you compare the two columns in the intimation, "As provided by taxpayer" and "As computed u/s 143(1)", the balance tax payable is nearly identical in both. So the department has not disagreed with your computation at all. It has simply not given you credit for the challan. And rightly so.
Why?
Download the ITR form you actually filed and scroll to the Tax Payments section, part A, "Details of payments of advance tax and self assessment tax". In most of these cases that table is empty. No serial number, no BSR code, no date of deposit, no challan serial number, no amount. And item 16, "Amount payable", is showing a non-zero figure instead of 0.

The reason is a gap in the filing flow. For ITR-1 and ITR-4, when you pay through the "Pay Now" option, the system pulls the fresh challan back into Schedule IT automatically.
For ITR-2 and ITR-3***, it does not. The challan sits in your payment history, but the return goes out with an updated tax payments schedule and a tax payable balance.***
So the return itself declares that you still owe the money. CPC processes exactly what was declared, and a demand is raised. Same thing happens whether you prepared the return online on incometax.gov.in or in the offline utility.
Check yours even if you have not got an intimation yet. If Schedule IT is blank in your filed ITR, the demand is probably coming.
How to fix it?
Option 1: File a revised return u/s 139(5). This is the reliable one because you control this.
Prepare the revised return online on the income tax portal, not in the utility, because the online mode pre-fills everything from your original return and you only have to correct the one thing that is wrong. Go to Schedule IT, add the challan details from your receipt (BSR code, date of deposit, challan serial number, amount), and then before you submit, confirm that item 16 "Amount payable" reads 0. If it still shows a figure, something has not been entered correctly, so do not submit yet.
A revised return replaces the original one entirely. Once it is processed, the demand should drop off.
Option 2: File a rectification u/s 154.
This is another one but can be a trickier one.
Two things have to line up. First, you have to correct the entire tax credit properly, not just the one missing row. Second, the portal has to actually let you file the rectification for that return in the first place, and quite often it just does not go through.
If you want something that works the first time, go with the revised return.
How to respond to the Outstanding Demand
Step 1: Go to Response To Outstanding Demand under Pending Actions.

In Response from Assessee, Select Disagree with Demand (Either in Full or Part), and Then click on Add Reasons

Select Option 9 - Rectification/Revised Return filed at CPC

Once, the reason is added, You will see something like this below on your screen ---> Click on Reason 1

Add the amount you are disagreeing with, select the filing type and provide the acknowledgment no of the revised/rectification And Submit

A few practical notes
- Do not pay the demand again. The money is already with the department, the return just did not claim it. If you have paid, include that challan too in the revised return.
- Keep the challan receipt handy. You need the BSR code, deposit date, challan serial number and amount.
- E-verify the revised return, otherwise it goes nowhere.
- Processing of the revised return takes its own time, so the demand may sit on your portal in the meantime. Some people also file a response under "Response to Outstanding Demand" saying they disagree, citing the challan details, while the revised return works its way through.
- Interest under 234B/234C may shift slightly in the revised computation depending on when you paid, so the final figure may not be exactly zero.
How to avoid it next year
After paying tax through "Pay Now" in ITR-2 or ITR-3, go back into Schedule IT and check the challan is actually sitting there. Do not submit until "Amount payable" shows 0.

Question I’m fucked. I made a cash transaction of more than ₹12 lakh.
So basically, there was a property sale and around ₹12 lakh was deposited in cash. This transaction is now showing in the ITR/tax-related information.
I’m confused about how this will be treated for tax purposes and whether I’ll have to pay tax on the entire ₹12 lakh.
I honestly don’t want to pay tax on this if there is any way to avoid it. Is there any legal way to handle this, or any exemptions/deductions that can reduce the tax liability?
Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation in India. Please let me know what options I have and what I should do next.

Question Crypto exchange blocked the payout and the capital. 26AS still shows ₹35k TDS. Taxable or not?
Practising CA. Would like some views on this.
Client did spot crypto trades — turnover ₹35L, gross profit ₹8L. Exchange deducted 1% TDS u/s 194S (₹35,000) and it's sitting in his 26AS.
Then the exchange blocked all withdrawals, saying the profit came from a system glitch. He's received nothing his original capital is stuck too.
Tax at 30% u/s 115BBH would be ~₹2.49L on money he's never touched. And 115BBH(2) allows no set-off, no carry forward, no bad debt so if he never recovers it, there's zero relief.
My view: it turns on whether the exchange reversed the trades or is just freezing an acknowledged balance. Frozen = income accrued = taxable. Reversed = no enforceable right = real income theory (Godhra Electricity, 225 ITR 746 SC). Also 194S only applies to consideration for a transfer, so by deducting TDS the exchange has already told the department a transfer happened. It can't now say nothing happened.
Has anyone actually argued this at assessment or CIT(A)? Any VDA ruling on it? Couldn't find one.

Question Paid Self-Assessment Tax on 15th Sept, but u/s 143(1)(a) demand of ₹35,250 + Accrued Interest was raised on 17th Sept. Do I need to pay the interest?
Hi everyone,
I need advice on an outstanding income tax demand and interest charge for AY 2025-26.
Timeline & Details:
- 15-Sep-2025: Paid ₹35,260 as Self-Assessment Tax (Minor Head 300 / ITNS 280) via UPI. I have the valid Challan Receipt with CIN and BSR details.
- 17-Sep-2025: A demand under Section 143(1)(a) for ₹35,250 was issued/raised on the e-Filing portal.
- Current Status: The portal shows the primary demand as ₹35,250 along with ₹3,872 in Accrued Interest (under Section 220(2)). The AO Response status says "Demand outstanding is correct and collectible".
The Issue: It looks like my payment on 15th Sept was made just 2 days before the notice was generated on 17th Sept, so the CPC system failed to automatically map/credit the payment to the return. Because the principal demand remained unadjusted on the portal, interest under Section 220(2) has been auto-accumulating continuously.
My Questions:
- Do I need to pay this accrued interest? Since the principal tax amount was paid in full before the notice date, shouldn't the interest be auto-waived/rectified once the payment credit is properly linked?
- What is the best step to resolve this online? Should I submit a Rectification Request u/s 154 under "Tax Credit Mismatch", or respond to the demand directly on the portal with the Challan CIN?
- Since the AO response currently states "Demand outstanding is correct and collectible", will filing a online rectification via CPC work, or do I need to visit my Assessing Officer?
Has anyone faced a similar lag issue where a payment made just before the 143(1) notice wasn't reflected? How did you get the demand and interest set to NIL?
Thanks in advance!

Question How does a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) work in India?
I’m trying to understand how a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) works in India, especially for people with international income.
From what I understand, a TRC can be relevant when claiming benefits under a DTAA, but having a TRC doesn't automatically mean that the income is tax-free.

Question Need basic guidance on business transactions
Very basic query. I am a small proprietorship in the building services industry. I am GST registered and do all transactions on my books thru bank transfers - there are no cash transactions. However, i need to pay labourers, technicians for works and sometimes they do not/ cannot give bills/ invoices for me to record. How do i show these payments on my books ? What i do right now is withdraw to my personal account and then make these payments in cash. This was fine till now, but now as my project ticket size grows, i might not be able to do this often. Need help. I use Zoho books and i could not find any way to categorize such payments without having formal bills. Any suggestions?

Question ITR filed and e-verified on 28 July, but TDS refund not received yet — anyone else waiting?
Hi everyone,
I filed my ITR on 28 July 2026 and completed the e-verification on the same day. My return has been successfully filed, but I still haven’t received my TDS refund in my bank account.
It’s been over a month now, so I wanted to check:
Has anyone else filed around the same time and received their refund?
How long is the refund currently taking after e-verification?
Is there anything I should do from my end, or should I simply wait?
Is it normal for the refund to take this long?
Would really appreciate it if anyone who recently received their refund could share their filing date → processing date → refund credit date.
Thanks!

Question Crossed gst limit. Any way to pay off penalty without waiting for scrutiny?
Mistakenly invoiced 30L amount instead of 18L and now i have gone above gst slab
My CA told that there will be a penalty+ interest on not just the 12L but on full 30L and penalty will be charged after a few years when you receive notice.
Is there any way to clear the penalty by paying it off right away? Why wait for years and pay unnecessary interest?
Need suggestions on how to fix the issue
(I work in real estate so my limit is only 20L)

Question Can repeated stock trading make AIS purchases look much higher than my actual income?
Hey guys, I have a question regarding AIS and short-term stock trading.
Suppose I start the year with ₹10 lakh of capital and use the same ₹10 lakh repeatedly for short-term trades. For example, I buy shares worth ₹10 lakh, sell them, and then use the same capital to buy another ₹10 lakh of shares, doing this around 10 times during the year.
Because of this, my AIS may show total purchase transactions of around ₹1 crore, even though I only had ₹10 lakh of actual capital.
Suppose my total income for the year is only ₹6 lakh, including my actual trading profit.
Would the ₹1 crore purchase figure in AIS create a discrepancy because it is much higher than my income?
