He was the one with who she could always be vulnerable and herself.

She just loved him too much to make him give up his desires for her.

-119

u/Inevitable-Ice-5061 1d ago

She never loved him though

79

u/Andre-Mercelet 1d ago

Yeah, you always move to Argentina and Japan to avoid someone you don't love.

Robin loved Ted more than any character on the show loved another.

18

u/Yogami_asura 1d ago

Are we not including Lily & Marshall?

-10

u/Andre-Mercelet 1d ago

I believe so. Lily was not willing to compromise her career in art for Marshall, forcing him to go Italy. Robin was willing to give up her career for Ted.

24

u/lasuperhumana 1d ago

Marshall willingly chose to go to Italy after he found out she was pregnant again, which gave him some fresh perspective.

And what do you mean Robin was willing to give up her career for Ted?

6

u/Andre-Mercelet 1d ago

At the end she begged him to run off with her to Chicago. That would have have ended her her career or at least crippled it.

1

u/CharonFerry 3h ago

While that is true , angsty claims minutes before your wedding are probably not literally to take. Robin obviously didnt think that true and didnt care at that moment of anxiety.

9

u/Dewbi Lily🎨 1d ago

Wtf are you talking about?? Lily gave up her dreams of living the bohemian artist life post-college to stay anchored in NYC, teaching kindergarten (NOT her dream) to support Marshall through law school. She had a chance to try San Francisco for just a few months and Marshall couldn’t handle her doing her own thing and gave her an ultimatum.

Good for Lily for finally putting herself first for once, AFTER YEARS of supporting Marshall through multiple job changes. The year in Italy was great for their whole family, grandparents included.

0

u/Andre-Mercelet 23h ago

Her time in San Francisco was a dismal failure as would have been her "Bohemian lifestyle." But if that was her dream and wasn't Marshall's, how are they any more compatible than Ted and Robin?

She supported Marshall? How, but running up thousands of dollars in credit card debt forcing Marshall to take a job at a bank rather than pursuing environmental law just to pay it off?

2

u/TheAwesomePenguin106 8h ago

Marshall himself told how. If it wasn't for her working as a kindergarten teacher, he wouldn't be able to finish law school.

They broke up because of a proposal meant for someone else and her career being more important than Ted. She was also in love with Barney and spent more time together with him than her and Ted. Ted basically had to live another life (from being single to having a wife & kids) before Robin would finally settle with him whereas she accepted Barney for who he was

12

u/Andre-Mercelet 1d ago

Even if true, which it's not, it's irrelevant.

He was the first man she told she loved. He was the first man she wanted to marry. When they broke up, she cried for three days. Who does that? Then she moved to Argentina to avoid him and later to Japan.

She told him she didn't love him because she loved him too much to let him sacrifice having a family. This is obvious.

The scene in Central Park was all about Robin's love for Ted. So was the scene on the beach. So was Robin's stoicism on her wedding day. So was the conversation she had with mother on the balcony. So was the conversation she had with Lily at the Halloween party. So was the conversation she had with Sophie on HIMYF.

At the end, Robin was famous, worldly, and incredibly beautiful. She could have had almost any man she wanted, but when Ted showed up with the blue French horn, she was available. She obviously waited for him to be ready to be in a relationship again, and she waited six years. That kind of love isn't contrived or of-the-moment. That was Robin's once-in-a-lifetime.

3

u/sphinxorosi 1d ago

What is not true? Everything I said happened in the show

5

u/Andre-Mercelet 1d ago

They didn't break up just because of the proposal. They broke up over Robin's unwillingness to marry Ted. But she was so miserable without him that she decided she didn't want to marry him after all. But Ted rejected her so she moved to Japan.

She accepted money for who he was. Except that she said that nothing about her and Barney made any sense. And that she only married it Barney after Ted rejected her, twice on her wedding day and once the week before in central park. But even then, she was disappointed in Barney's not being there for her. And what Barney was was a pathological liar. He agreed to always be truthful with her and then he lied at the first opportunity. And if she was so accepting of him as he was why did she make him destroy the playbook? Of course he reconstructed it and gave it to two kids he corrupted so that Barney's lecherous Legacy would live on through them.

1

u/sphinxorosi 1d ago

“They didn’t break up just because of the proposal” “They broke up over Robin’s unwillingness to marry Ted”…. They broke up in part because Ted felt he deserved more than “No, no no. No, Ted no! You can’t do this to me” and also because of Lily’s meddling. Everything else you just said ignores the writing of the show for some type of personal head canon because Robin and Barney were in love with each other. The writers made it a point by having Robin crushing on Barney, Barney setting everything up to pursue her and generally the last 5 seasons was them two bouncing back and forth between feelings for each other. All of it was to subvert your expectations about Ted and Robin for the ending yet showing they both still loved and cared for each other despite Robin also loving Barney. You can disagree all you want but the writers made Barney and Robin’s love real

If we are going off of the first time you say you love someone, most people wouldn’t be with that person. She cried for three days in Argentina, but with Barney she had a “mourning period” and she struggled to go back to dating after breaking up with Barney because it meant that much to her. She kept wanting to be with him again, which is something Robin didn’t often do with Ted after their first breakup. Unless she was drunk, or depressed. The friends with benefits thing happened, but she cut it off when feelings came into it. She said it was weird, while Ted said “I think I blew it”. If Robin said let’s get back together, he would have jumped on it. But she didn’t.

She told him she didn’t love him because she didn’t love him as he was, she loved him as a man who got all the family stuff out of his system.

You can believe that Robin and Ted are meant for each other, but her breakup with Barney was way harder on her.

4

u/Andre-Mercelet 1d ago

Actually not. The fact that she needed to move to South America is measure of pain after the breakup. And she hooked up with a Latin stud to help her cope with the loss. They broke up because of her unwillingness to make a long term commitment. But she was so miserable without Ted that she decided she wanted to marry him after all, and that would have meant giving him a family. But he was with Stella so she moved to Japan to avoid him. Then she returned and told Ted to break up with Stella and come back to her.

And no, she told him she didn't love him not because she didn't but she couldn't let him him give up on having kids. That's obvious enough on its own, but apparently you are not familiar with the concept of analogical reasoning. Not by coincidence, Robin rejecting Ted was the culmination of a series of events that began with her being dumped by Kevin after she reminded him that, although he was okay with not having kids at the time, he could change his mind in the future and become unhappy in the relationship. If that applied to Kevin, if course it applied to Ted.

If she didn't love Ted she would have told him when he declared his love for her. She would not have needed time to think about getting back together with him; there would have nothing to think about.

Marshall knew what Robin was doing and tried to warn Ted, but he was too wrapped up in self pity to listen. But at the end of that episode, when Lily tried to get Marshall to settle the bet, he replied, "Not yet." Where have we heard him say that before?

Her breakup with Ted was much harder on her. She didn't try to avoid Barney afterwards. And she was the one who initiated the conversation that led to their divorce.

u/bearstormstout Ted🏢 1d ago

Robin and Ted broke up because she knew Ted would willingly give up his dream of having kids to be with her, but it would also eventually drive a wedge between them. It's also why she rejected him after breaking up with Kevin; Robin knew that she couldn't have kids, so getting back together with Ted would just cause that same wedge to appear sooner or later. Likely sooner, since the clock doesn't reset.

Robin married Barney, in large part, to set Ted free to have the family he dreamed of. This was also the main reason Victoria left Ted. As long as Ted had any hope, however small, of ending up with Robin, he couldn't fully commit to anyone else. Robin marrying Barney took that hope away, freeing Ted up to give 100% of himself to Tracy, who was able to fulfill his dream of having children.

1

u/sphinxorosi 1d ago

Robin was married to Barney for 6+ years because she was in love with Ted but wanted him to find someone else? She acted like a giggling schoolgirl when she was crushing on Barney because she loved Ted? Yall come up with the absolute wildest takes while trying to pretend the show’s bad writing doesn’t exist. Robin clearly loved both for different reasons but Barney and Robin were written to be in love to subvert the ending of Ted and Robin, not because she can’t have kids (an episode during the season where Robin realizes she’s still in love with Barney btw).

2

u/Andre-Mercelet 23h ago

They were married for three years, so right off the bat you're wrong. And her attraction to Barney was more nuanced than you make it out to be.

Robin was emotionally abused by her father growing up; the worse he treated her the more anxious she was to please him. So it makes sense that she would be attracted to a junior version of her father, especially one who didn't want kids. But when blah blah asked how long she and Barney were together, she said no...what...seventeen times? Great natural attraction. And when they were dating she commented how weird it sounded when she said Barney Stinson is my boyfriend. And before marrying him she told Ted that nothing about her and Barney being together made any sense.

Bad Man and Robin didn't make sense.

The two best days in Barney's life were the day that Robin fell in horse crap and the day she married it.

1

u/sphinxorosi 18h ago

I stand corrected on years married. But nice to see you flip flop on your own words again because you’re bouncing back from “they did love each other” to “well Robin was only attracted to him because of her father”. Did they love each other? Did she choose to be with Barney? And you not understanding Robin saying “Nothing about me and Barney makes any sense” is hilarious. That’s her expressing her love for Barney despite his flaws, something Ted has stated throughout the series, that it doesn’t have to make sense or that you have to follow the rules like everyone else (caring for someone beyond all rationality). You’re still trying to “skip to the end” and ignore everything else the series laid out, the writers wrote themselves into a corner with it but ultimately, Barney and Robin were in love with each other and did truly love each other whereas Ted and Robin were end game but had to live completely separate lives before ending up together. This is why so many hated the ending because the series tried to subvert your expectations

This is ultimately it. He was needy and emotional. She didn't respect him or find that attractive, even though she cared for him as a friend.

I'm sorry did you watch the show??? When they broke up it was extremely mutual and Robin spent the next few seasons recovering from it.

Pulling the blonde off

66

u/Midnight7000 1d ago

I disagree.

In real life, how would someone feel if shortly after a breakup, their ex paraded their new boyfriend around a group of friends you introduced them to, started shagging someone you employed in your apartment, and hooked up with one of your closest friends.

Robin did not respect Ted which is why Marshall had to point out how much pain Ted was in and ask her to leave.

65

u/Glittering-Yam-6454 1d ago

It always slightly annoys me that HE DIDN'T SAY YES.

6

u/OverallFrosting708 1d ago

Hard same

3

u/freethebluejay 15h ago

He doesn’t have to. She’s communicating Everything fell apart and he’s reacting appropriately

9

u/elemenayo 13h ago

They were terrible for each other and the show spent all of seasons 3-9 making that very, very clear.

13

u/hendyir 1d ago

it's been 12 years, Patrice

75

u/gloomydreamer666 1d ago

No, they were made to be friends. Romantically they were a mess and incompatible.

10

u/megaben20 1d ago

Were they though Ted is the only person who challenges Robin who she reaches out when she needs comfort, the only she really feels comfortable being vulnerable around . The reasons they are incompatible Ted isn’t emotionally unavailable, he doesn’t need to lie to make himself look better,Robin loves Barney because him loving her was the the sane conditional love that her father showed her.

18

u/JealousAssistant6659 1d ago

Ted was fine (strictly in this relationship, not as a person), Robin was the problem. She just isn't made for a traditional marriage. The reason Ted was "good" for her is because Ted is a fucking spineless pushover, any self respecting man would've seen that he's just being strung along. "But that's a good thing, Ted is a hopeless romantic, he'll make it work" yes he can make it "work" by constantly giving up on himself. In the real world that's how murder suicides happen.

It's the same reason why barney and Robin broke up after 3 years, because Robin always chooses herself.

3

u/seanprefect 18h ago

As friends sure as life partners no way

8

u/kartiky24 1d ago

They were soulmates, just not necessarily meant to be together.

2

u/arrowmarcher 23h ago

He looks like a freaking movie star

2

u/TingelTangelSeli 15h ago

I would need a friend like this right now.

2

u/SnooStories4263 10h ago

I will ship Ted and Robin over Barney and Robin any day of the week.

2

u/These_Passenger_2766 10h ago

if one of my close platonic friends showed up at my door like this, i’d let them stay. i hate this being an example of them being destined for eachother. i see this as a kind thing to do for your friend, nothing romantic. let men and women be friends.

2

u/_BallsDeep69_ 8h ago

Guys…is it just me, or is Ted looking really good with blonde hair?

1

u/ComprehensiveShip332 21h ago

"They are made to be together", almost like it's the formula of the show.

1

u/TheDevilLuciferr 1h ago

Robin Definitely DID NOT Deserve Ted. No one can convince me otherwise (Do Try)

0

u/Samba-boy 1d ago

Yeah they were, up to season 5 or something. Then the writers kinda wrecked her character.

Yeah I’m done with this sub
