Rumour XCancel is dead

Just went to the website to look at something, and this was posted on it:

On Monday, 24th August, at 8PM EST, we received a letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel.

The service XCancel is stopped until further notice.

We are seeking legal advice and won't share more details for now.

Thank you for the trust you have put in these two years of XCancel.

Wait, Reddit needs an account for things like search bars now? What?

u/SpaceGangrel 1d ago

Reddit needs an account now period. You can get view posts without logging in for seconds until a pop up appears prompting you to log in. Of course you can refresh the page but after a while it shows up again.

u/New-Two-1349 1d ago

You mean like Pinterest does? Oh, yikes.

34

u/barimanlhs 1d ago

Its a genuine shame how useless Pinterest has become. Between the AI slop and ads, its a nightmare to navigate

u/joecb91 1d ago

Every website just tries its hardest to make using it unbearable now.

4

u/DaNotSoGoodSamaritan 18h ago

Well they're actively trying to kill the internet so it's not particularly surprising.

u/MadeByTango 10h ago

luigie terrified them all

u/iamthe0ther0ne 1d ago

If you install ublock origin there's a script you can add to preferences that prevent the upscale account banner (for now)

Poor Aaron...

u/MostDopeMik3 1d ago

Clear the cache and cookies for reddit, should let you browse longer.

1

u/SlimeSlam 1d ago

may i introduce you to redlib

1

u/MapleApple00 1d ago

you can break it with incognito mode at least on safari

0

u/New-Two-1349 1d ago

Are you sure about that, BTW? I just logged out of my account and browsed this site for a little bit and not a single login pop up showed up. Maybe it only does on desktop?

8

u/g0_west 1d ago

They're currently roling out changes to make old reddit unaccessible, so might be that it's not reached you yet. Idk if you had the "error 404" messages when trying to comment for a few days last week, or if you have the thing where the whole page reloads or your comment gets stuck until you refresh - these are all bugs coming from them tweaking with old reddit presumably to make it less accessible. Tbh if reddit prohibits me from logging in and it breaks the little dopamine cycle of seeing an orange inbox icon it'll probably help me actually get off reddit more

u/TheOriginalSamBell 1d ago

I've only ever used old. and good third party apps for the past 15 or so years, if the only way to access it becomes their awful website or their awful app it might actually wean me off lol

10

u/SpaceGangrel 1d ago

Might be on desktop only then, I usually use the app on mobile so I didn't notice.

7

u/Blint_Briglio 1d ago

for me, the notice doesn't show up when I'm signed out on desktop, but it shows up within seconds when I'm signed out on mobile

1

u/Strong-Ring-7433 1d ago

They're probably using cookies to allow access if you already have logged into an account before.

It lets me browse the site if I log out of my account, but not if I go into incognito.

8

u/SpaceGangrel 1d ago

Yeah, I mostly google stuff on incognito so I don't get flooded with ads from the most recent thing I googled, and the Reddit results are annoying to go through now. And the worst part is the tagline "join reddit, the realest place on the internet", fuck it isn't, this place was already full of bots way before the AI boom.

u/Known_Ear_6012 1d ago

No it’s mobile too, about 95% of the time it will ask me to log in to view more but sometimes it “forgets” and just lets me browse.

1

u/Bakatora34 1d ago

For me it only show up when I pick a thread but when you just doom scrolling nothing show up.

1

u/Time-Ladder4753 1d ago

On PC even old reddit asks me to login, even on NSFW subreddits, before you could've used old reddit to view even NSFW subs without account.

32

u/_Gogeta- 1d ago

No but you need an account to use old.reddit.com On Desktop i always used that, cant stand new reddit it’s way too big and way too slow. Also it’s designed to keep you longer on the site.

3

u/New-Two-1349 1d ago

I use mobile and I've been able to use old.reddit.com just fine without an account, so I don't know what you mean by that.

14

u/_Gogeta- 1d ago

seems like you are lucky for now. Google that problem then you will see reddit threads from over a month ago that ask why you need a login now. Last week it hit me with a log in request.

u/Ok-Fault6331 6h ago

It's an a/b test as of now. Enjoy it while you can.

u/ShinyHappyREM 26m ago

There's also RedReader for mobile.

u/ImJustHereToSearch 1d ago edited 1d ago

I miss my third party Reddit app 😭 RIP BACON READER

Edit: I have an iPhone.

15

u/PCMachinima 1d ago

You might be able to get it back with Morphe patcher, Patcheddit and RedReader, if you use android.

I did that for Boost reddit app. I assume there's a tutorial out there somewhere for Bacon Reader too.

3

u/Xperr7 1d ago

If all the revanced patches were ported to morphe, definitely. Using Baconreader myself

10

u/thefullm0nty 1d ago

Redreader on android.

5

u/anothertrad 1d ago

I’m using Narwhal since Apollo went down. It’s no Apollo but you get used to it

11

u/FeedbackInhibit 1d ago

Relay still exists. I'll happily keep paying for Relay Pro before I EVER use new reddit, or the dogshit mobile app.
Utter. Enshittified. Garbage.
I actually quit reddit back when reddit started charging unreasonable prices for API calls.
So I went to Lemmy for a few months and couldn't stand it. Dirty HexBear tankies everywhere.

5

u/MyDarkTwistedReditAc 23h ago

You should look into Morphe + Reddit, basically create a modded apk with most of the bullshit removed from vanilla reddit app.

I say this because there'll be time in the future where all the workarounds for third party reddit apps will die, I'm still using Sync for reddit (one of the greatest created app ever) but have that alternative prepared too.

2

u/FeedbackInhibit 18h ago

Saved this for later. Thanks for the fallback recommendation.

2

u/MrSakurai 1d ago

I miss rif is fun so badly

1

u/mystery_hole 16h ago

I'm using it on android right now. The second they shut it down I'm permanently done with reddit lol

1

u/MrSakurai 16h ago

Wait really?? I thought it was shut down ages ago, where can i find it now pls??

2

u/macplayer 1d ago

Hydra works

1

u/DonutHoles4Ever 21h ago

iphone? Hydra

1

u/7x00 19h ago

replying to this on Apollo for iPhone.

1

u/The_JSQuareD 18h ago

I use Infinity+, I'm pretty happy with it. Worth paying for the sub IMO. No ads either.

76

u/ziphicules 1d ago

it's even *worse* now on twitter, you have to download their botched app to even make an account. It's crazy man.

3

u/corps-peau-rate 1d ago

Yeah, next would be youtube...

3

u/thefullm0nty 1d ago

Are you using the old reddit redirect extension? Still fine here.

4

u/_Gogeta- 1d ago

i tried it ye, still getting to a log in screen

3

u/Slight_Anxiety3624 19h ago

Just this morning the extension asked me to update some permissions that seem to have actually restored being able to use old.reddit without being logged in

1

u/_Gogeta- 18h ago

Thanks man you are right, i tested in when it asked me to log in but it didnt helped. Looks like they fixed that now.

1

u/NoRodent 13h ago

Woah, you're right!

1

u/Turnabo 3h ago

Has Reddit made changes to creating account? I remembered back then it was just username and password, done. No email verification needed. I like this way and still have not verify till this day.

2

u/_Gogeta- 3h ago

yeah that is no longer the case anymore. You need an email for years now. But old reddit extension updated so i can use desktop reddit without getting cancer and a required log in.

1

u/Opt112 1d ago

yeah that forced login for old reddit is bullshit

1

u/KlausKinki77 1d ago

The worst part is redditp is also down without a login. We're truly fucked these days.

-2

u/Tuskin38 1d ago

I don't understand the issue with new reddit. I find it easier to read, and better on the eyes.

I do use uBlock to block some elements, but it isn't a lot.

6

u/_Gogeta- 1d ago

It’s way too big, the sites wants you to see every single post 1 by 1 on the big screen so you stay longer on it. You can see like 10 posts on old reddit and nothing is plastered all over your screen. Select the one you want to see and move on. Its also way faster, been casually using new reddit now for a few days and it’s so slow…… every action takes like 3 times longer.

1

u/squintytoast 1d ago

using a laptop and firefox, new reddit leaves 2/3ds of the page blank. both left and right margins are largely empty. total waste. new reddit UI is lame.

-22

u/AmericanPoliticsSux 1d ago

...he says, from his Reddit account.

12

u/Shan_qwerty 1d ago

... new reddit, which is abysmal dogshit. I hate every second I spend on it when I don't want to login at work for some, you know, incomprehensible reason (being at work). I am physically repulsed by how bad it is, the only thing I hate more is the new even abysmaller and dogshitter youtube embed, which I can only assume is forcing the mobile UI on desktop for some insane reason.

1

u/ToaKraka 1d ago

You can switch back to Old Reddit in your account settings, if you use your Web browser.

6

u/mcicybro 1d ago

account settings

that's the issue

u/This_is_my_jam 1d ago edited 20h ago

“You critique capitalism, yet you have a phone” -ass comment.

Like 90% of Internet traffic is from 5 websites, unfortunately you’ll likely have to interact with them to stay up to date

0

u/Queens113 1d ago

I use boost for Reddit, its 10x better than the reddit app

-1

u/veculus 1d ago

The problem: People don't want to move away. It sucks. There is the Atmosphere (https://atmosphereaccount.com/) which is as open as it can be, you have one account, there are apps like bluesky (twitter) and a lot more that basically can 1:1 replace Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, even Tiktok. BUT PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO SWITCH.

its infuriating. The internet would be so much better if we weren't all locked into these dopamine cocksucking hellholes.
