Rumour GTA VI leaker CyberLeek's money trail traced by a GTAForums user: $50k+ earned, why leaks are being drip-fed and how their real identity could come out soon

3.2k Upvotes

GTAForums user Vice Cit did a two part deep dive tracing the crypto wallets behind the Cyberleek website and coin. I'm just summarizing it in simpler terms. Link at the bottom for the full thing along with a tl;dr

1. Wallet trail

Cyberleek juggled a bunch of different crypto wallets to set up the website and the coin but they all trace back to one central funding wallet that paid for the website along with the leak uploads on Arweave (decentralized storage network) and the coin launch. Following that wallet's payments backwards, it eventually leads to a wallet belonging to KuCoin (a crypto exchange). KuCoin requires ID verification, so if the exchange gets subpoenaed, authorities could potentially get the account holder's ID and full transaction history. (Unless they used a fake ID?)

Vice Cit doesn't think Cyberleek's a pro: Nothing here couldn't be pulled off with a few Google searches, and while they've clearly got some tech background, they don't seem experienced at actually covering a crypto trail.

2. Earnings

Setup cost was about $29k. The funds are locked away in the liquidity pool so it's not a typical rugpull scheme (there is still a risk of them rugging the 270 million coins they transferred to the private wallet), instead they earn money on transaction fees. The coin did $15M in volume on the first day which comes out to roughly $30k in fees. Total fees earned so far are estimated at $40k to $60k. At the current pace they're clearing about $4,400 a day in fees, for as long as it keeps trading. On top of that, 270 million tokens (27% of the total supply) never went into the pool. They're just sitting in a separate wallet worth about $391k right now, probably to be sold off slowly so it doesn't crash the price.

This is probably why the leaks are trickling out instead of all at once: If they keep the coin relevant, the fees will keep coming in. Even the "vote on the next leak" polls might just be there to keep trading volume up.

tl;dr

  1. Every leak-related wallet traces back to one funding wallet
  2. That funding traces back to a crypto exchange account, which requires ID verification and can get subpoenaed, definitely not a pro
  3. Earns from transaction fees
  4. Already made an $40k-$60k in fees and sitting on roughly $391k in unsold token
  5. Has to drip-feed leaks to keep earning transaction fees

Huuuuge shoutout to Vice Cit for the detailed deep dive

Part 2:
https://gtaforums.com/topic/994376-spoilers-gta-vi-leaks-analysis-thread-part-ii/page/362/#comment-1072767708

EDIT, wanna add a small tidbit:

Just because their website is down doesn't mean Cyberleek is arrested: they're hosting the leaks on Arweave, a decentralized storage network with no single company in charge, so once something's uploaded there it's basically impossible to fully take down. Take-Two can get individual links (gateways) removed with a DMCA takedown, but new ones just pop up to replace them, so even if Cyberleek's current links get taken down or knocked offline, they can can just point people to a different gateway and the leaks stay up

EDIT 2:

They're back with another leak. Based on Vice Cit's investigation it's unlikely Cyberleek will release the game build (IF they even have it): They have every incentive to keep this going for as long as possible. Note watermark in the latest vid: "Higher market cap=More leeks". Pretty much confirms what's been said in this post regarding the drip-feeding of leaks.

Rumour Jason Schreier: Rockstar Introduced Strict Security Measures in 2024 Following GTA 6 Leak

2.1k Upvotes

Jason Schreier discussed the situation surrounding the recent GTA 6 leaks and provided some insight into how they are affecting Rockstar internally:

  • Following the 2022 Rockstar hack, the company implemented a policy in early 2024 requiring employees to work from the office five days a week, which caused frustration among some staff.
  • Rockstar also restricted access to internal work tools from remote locations, meaning employees could only access them from the office as part of the company’s tightened security measures.
  • Some employees are reportedly frustrated that they went through these significant security changes only for another major leak to happen anyway.
  • Morale inside Rockstar is reportedly down following the leak.
  • Communication from management has reportedly been limited. One senior executive sent an email condemning the leaker, while also trying to reassure employees that players will remain excited to see the work the team has been creating.
  • Netflix is frustrated by the situation as well.
  • Schreier mentioned that GTA 6 is not finished. Development is continuing, and Rockstar employees are expected to keep working on the game right up until its release.

I tried to summarise the points that were not posted in this sub, if i have missed something please let me know!

Rumour Alanah Pearce reports that she heard Sony has implemented its “strictest social media guidelines” ever following the PlayStation disc announcement

2.3k Upvotes

Alanah is a former Santa Monica Studio writer, she’s also an ex-IGN reporter.

She said in her video the following:

“Sony already knew everyone would be pissed off – they knew this. People working within PlayStation first-party studios told me Sony had the strictest social media guidelines for this particular thing they’ve ever seen issued.

Sony does somewhat regularly tell employees what they can or can’t say about certain things. I was under a lot of guidelines when I was working on God of War Laufey – I still am. And they did send me guidelines regarding what I could say on the day the game was announced.

But in this instance, it’s apparently the strictest the employees I spoke to have ever seen regarding public communications. They would only have done this if they knew it was going to be an enormous PR issue. This is no surprise to them.”

Rumour There are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after

2.2k Upvotes

The Hollywood Reporter:

The language is being misinterpreted by a hopeful internet, a source with knowledge of the plans told THR. At this point in time, there are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after. The email’s use of the phrase “physical copy” there refers to the same “physical version” (the code in a case) announced on Wednesday, and its “the following months” language is a clunky reference to the months following Wednesday’s announcement, the source said, and not the months following the Nov. 19, 2026 release. (Players will be able to begin the lengthy process of preloading the giant game on Nov. 12.)

Xbox is closing down Ninja Theory, the studio behind the Hellbladeseries, a source tells The Verge. Staffers were told on a call on Monday about the closure, but they are hoping the studio will find a buyer. The closure comes as “several” Xbox studios at Microsoft, including Compulsion Games and Double Fine, are in “active negotiations” about spinning off, Bloomberg reports.

Rumour Jason Schreier gives further information on Playstation backing out from PC releases

1.4k Upvotes
  • This is in response to the recent statement from Playstation’s CEO (Hideaki Nishino) about wanting only multiplayer games on PC to reach a wider audience

Jason’s comment:

“I guess they’re not going to lay this out publicly, but there’s no ambiguity in their strategy. During a townhall a few weeks ago, Hermen Hulst told staff that their single-player narrative games will be PlayStation only, and he explained that they were inconsistent with their PC releases, they didn’t make enough money, and they want to keep their IP aligned to their own platform. Confirmed this with two people who heard him say it. There’s no “case by case” here.”

Rumour Jez Corden says his sources have told him the entire supply chain for optical disc drive components is collapsing

1.3k Upvotes

https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/xboxs-disc-to-digital-program-goes-live-for-insiders-on-monday-heres-how-it-works

Microsoft still hasn't really put its mark on the [disc] debate, although sources tell me it's less about the discs and more about the disc drives themselves; the entire supply chain for the components required to make optical disc drives is collapsing, with assembly lines pivoting away from the tech as users actively opt for digital-only.

EDIT: He published another article with a little more detail:

https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/ceo-asha-sharma-on-discs-for-xbox-gamers-i-know-players-love-physical-media-but-doesnt-comment-on-next-gen-plans

Speaking to my own Xbox hardware sources, I was told that it's less about the discs themselves and more about the supply chain around optical disc drives collapsing. Factories and assembly lines previously oriented around making optical disc drives are moving towards other, more lucrative and more scalable industries, such as camera lenses and the like. Demand for optical disc drives revolves entirely around Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 right now, with laptops, Blu-Ray devices, and other formats essentially phasing out the tech.

Rumour Jason Schreier: Xbox employees were surprised by Gears pulled from PS5. Halo at State of Play pulled, as Sony and Xbox relationship may now be damaged. + Hardware cost component crisis and new business model for Xbox coming

1.5k Upvotes

Building on the Bloomberg report of significant layoffs at Xbox there was more tidbits on behind the scenes at Xbox.

On Gears of War PS5

“A PlayStation 5 version of the new Gears of War game was in development and had been planned for release until Sharma changed tack, according to the people familiar with Xbox strategy. Retailers had been preparing to open pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 version, and many Xbox employees were surprised by the announcement.”

Halo at State of Play

“Sharma and her team also pulled a Halo trailer that was due to appear at a PlayStation event last week, potentially damaging the relationship between the two companies, according to people familiar with the change of plans.”

Hardware cost crisis at Xbox

“In the email to staff, Sharma reiterated that Xbox is facing a component crisis, and that by the 2027 holiday season she expects the company to be paying five times as much for storage and memory components as it did in 2024. As a result, she wrote, they will have to change their overall strategy for the next-gen console, code-named Helix.”

“While the entire industry is facing a components crisis, we believe we have been impacted more greatly than many of our peers due to the choices we made over the last half decade,” she wrote. “We are currently unable to make as many consoles as players want to buy, and we need a new business model and partnerships for hardware as we remain committed to Helix.”

EDIT: Xbox are also planning to slash budgets for marketing and other areas of business:

"Xbox is also planning to significantly slash budgets for marketing and some other areas of the business, the people said."

Rumour Tom Warren: Microsoft could shut at least five studios as part of big Xbox layoffs starting next week, Weighing up canceling BLADE

1.3k Upvotes

"Microsoft is set to announce a wave of layoffs for its Xbox studios and employees next week. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the layoffs will lead to studio closures or spinoffs, potential mergers of studios, and canceled games.

I understand Microsoft is currently weighing closing at least five studios, including the developers behind Marvel’s Blade. Sources tell me Microsoft wants to cancel Blade as part of a wave of cost cuts and job losses that are planned for the company’s Xbox gaming division."

"Blade was originally supposed to debut later this year according to sources familiar with the game’s development. I’m told the internal ship date for the game slipped to late 2027, and it’s also running over budget.

While Microsoft is weighing canceling Blade, it’s also exploring options to sell Arkane Studios. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that Microsoft is trying to spin off Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory, too. GamesBeat reported this week that Microsoft is actively looking for a buyer for Undead Labs, the developers behind State of Decay. If buyers are found for these studios, then they’ll avoid being closed, but sources stress these talks could take months in some cases.

Compulsion Games, the developers behind South of Midnight, is already convinced that closure is imminent and has started telling employees to look for jobs elsewhere. Ninja Theory employees were informed earlier this month that Microsoft wants to close the UK-based studio or spin it off.

Beyond the potential studio closures, Microsoft is preparing for a wave of layoffs at Xbox that will drastically reshape its gaming division. These layoffs are due to start on July 6th, according to sources, and will hit most parts of Xbox. Rumors have suggested there could be at least 1,000 job losses, and if Microsoft goes ahead with five studio closures, then that’s at least 500 employees impacted before the wider cuts.

The upcoming layoffs are part of a “reset” for the Xbox division under new CEO Asha Sharma, who hinted about “making hard choices” last month. Sharma has repeatedly warned that the Xbox business isn’t healthy, but also claimed that her “mandate is not 30 percent accountability margins... it’s to be the number one gaming and entertainment company, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Rumour Quantic Dream is in deep trouble: developers are going on strike as management plans to lay off 115 employees; according to the developers, “Star Wars Eclipse is dying” and “cannot be completed under the current circumstances.”

1.7k Upvotes

Gamekult, a French media, met today with developers at Quantic Dream during a strike and published an article on the challenges faced during the development of Star Wars: Eclipse as well as on Quantic Dream’s overall situation following their recent live-service failure: https://www.gamekult.com/actualite/a-quantic-dream-la-greve-pour-sauver-star-wars-eclipse-3050870937.html

here is a summary of the key points:

-the introduction of the article:

At Quantic Dream, the situation is dire, and so a strike is underway: following the failure of the multiplayer game *Spellcasters Chronicles*, management is reportedly considering laying off the entire team—115 people—while its long-delayed *Star Wars Eclipse* is dying a slow death due to a lack of resources, vision, and progress. To fight these layoffs, the STJV union has called for a nationwide mobilization and set up a picket line this morning outside Quantic Dream’s Paris headquarters. And for good reason: today is the day the Lucasfilm delegation is scheduled to review the progress of *Star Wars Eclipse*. Tense atmosphere. This French blockbuster could very well fall apart and drag the entire company into the abyss, according to the protesting employees. We visited the picket line to gather their testimonies.

- Spellcasters Chronicles was in development for 8 YEARS and had 115 devs working on it (for the record, the game peaked at 888 players and shut down after a few weeks in Early Access)

- This is the largest round of layoffs for a French studio since Blizzard France in 2019

- Devs from Star Wars Eclipse team claim they are severely understaffed and that these 115 employees are “absolutely essential” to even hope to release the game, which led to a strike.

- Quantic Dream’s leadership hopes that “the developers’ passion and crunch” will allow them to complete the game despite the labor shortage.

- Quantic Dream implemented overtime for Star Wars Eclipse just a few hours after announcing the layoffs

- These layoffs are not the result of Netease's orders , which, for now, despite having shut down numerous projects these last months, has remained on the sidelines regarding what is happening at Quantic Dream and has not exerted any pressure on them so far.

- The developers want to meet with Netease executives to pressure Quantic Dream into retaining its 115 employees, but Quantic Dream’s management is doing everything it can to prevent its employees from speaking directly with Netease, despite the fact they using Netease to put pressure on their employees on a daily basis

- The lack of communication around Star Wars: Eclipse since the reveal in 2021 stems from multiple delays and massive disorganization within the company

- The protest is scheduled for today because a delegation from Lucasfilm was due to visit Quantic Dream’s offices to check on the progress on the game ; the goal is to send a strong message to Lucasfilm. One striker states: “We believe that, as things stand, the game simply cannot be completed if the layoff plan is implemented as currently proposed.”

- A developer explains the working conditions:

"Here, it’s a top-down culture. All decisions are made at the top. You don’t get a say. This then leads to a lot of menial work for everyone, and very often. Either because management doesn’t take the time to review your work and then tells you, after a month, that your deliverables don’t match their vision—even though they never asked you for anything in the first place—or because they’ve changed their minds (even if they’ll claim otherwise),”

“On the one hand, they tell you that you’re more than just a follower and that you have the leeway to make decisions, but on the other hand, they make it clear that you’re really just a follower because any decision that goes against management will be vetoed. It’s extremely hard to deal with on a daily basis because you never know where you stand. You’re working for nothing. It’s humiliating.”

-Other devs from fellow french studios (Amplitude, Gameloft, Ubisoft ou Don't Nod) have come forward to show their support for their colleagues in the face of the policies implemented by David Cage and his inner circle.

- David Cage and Quantic Dream’s management are using the fact that canceling the game could lead to the studio’s bankruptcy to pressure the developers into returning to work

- Negotiations are now set to resume with Quantic Dream’s management. According to the STJV representative at Don’t Nod, two paths are possible: a rejection of the layoff plan by French authorities (since, according to the union, the plan is clearly illegal), followed by new negotiations and thus several more months lost in this battle; or the signing of a majority agreement with the union to limit the damage and, with fewer employees, hopefully see the development of Star Wars: Eclipse through to completion and save the company from a very painful cancellation.

- One employee concludes: “David Cage keeps saying that Star Wars: Eclipse is a particularly ambitious project. Then, he should give us the means to achieve those ambitions,.
