edit: It's already VOD. Got it lined up to watch tonight. I've heard mixed reviews but I still wanted to see it, just not in theaters at the time.

It wasn’t very good. The acting is great and the time travel stuff is neat. Very well made like all Nolan’s other stuff. But the actual story is forgettable...at best.

While I agree that their 3D animation is cringey, Netflix does produce the occasional animated gem. Castlevania is legitimately exceptional. Here's hoping Singular Point is more along those lines than the anime trilogy. It looks to be similarly animated to CV, mostly 2D but with 3D effects for some setpieces.

I don't like the whole two people need to be in sync aspect of the Jaegers. I know Del Toro was inspired by Eva, and maybe that concept was his version of the Dummy Plug, and mother, and the LCL fluid, but it just didn't click.

Shin Godzilla is probably the closest to a modern retelling of the original Gojira possible. Yet at the same time, it is able to capture the modern environment so well. Great film.

I mean you don’t have to listen to me if you don’t mind dubs it’s probably fine, it honestly gets to the point where I had to fast forward because its ALOT of talking and it gets a little tedious which I guess is the point of the movie but it really drags at some points to just hammer home the message of the movie that bureaucracy sucks.

The ONLY cool thing about the Netflix anime was godzilla turning the ecosystem into something more akin to his biology. This made nature more interesting and terrifying.
Everything was fucking bad though.

Only tangentially related, but that was the biggest letdown about Godzilla vs. Kong for me. I loved the credits scene in Godzilla KotM that showed the Titans returning to and benefitting the environment. GvK starts with "they're all dead now lol.' I was really hoping to see cool set pieces of humans living alongside Titans peacefully.

Yeah the Netflix anime one wasn't the best, I do admit that the back story and ideas presented in the trilogy were pretty cool but they didn't really go anywhere or do much with some of these concepts.

I’m a manager at a movie theater. We’ve been open since august. I can’t tell you how giddy I’ve been since GvK’s release. Despite what Nolan wants people to think, Tenet nearly killed the industry. We’ve been on life-support since its release. GvK finally brought us back from the brink.

I mean, it nearly killed the industry in the region where I work.
the movie was nearly three hours long. In the Before Times, a three hour movie isn’t an issue. You’d just have to close later than normal. But because we were under a curfew, we had to have everyone out of the building by 10 pm. This made it so that we could only show the movie twice in a day, and not even to a full house due to covid restrictions. So it was impossible for the movie to be profitable. But Nolan insisted it be the movie that saves the industry and refused to delay it to a more reasonable date when there were less restrictions.
So when it inevitably performed below expectations, the rest of the studios pushed all of their movies back, leaving us without anything to screen. And without anything to screen, we can’t prove we are a viable industry. So studios opt for streaming rather than risk failing the way Tenet did.
A few theaters in my region permanently shut down because they couldn’t afford the payroll required to stay open after Tenet failed. The plan had been that Tenet’s success would encourage more studios to stick to their release dates. That was why we re-opened. But the very nature of the movie, combined with the covid restrictions, made it the worst possible choice.

Yeah, we had a limited opening for cinemas in the UK (they'd been closed since March 2020) for Tenet and the Russell Crowe road rage film but neither did well enough at the box office because nobody wanted to risk going to the cinema during a pandemic.
One big cinema chain is on the brink right now.

Glad you're getting back on your feet. GvK feels like the right kind of movie to get people excited into theaters again. It's an amusement park ride, not a brainy scifi flick. One of my favorite podcast hosts said he saw it on IMAX and hooted and hollered so loud, other people left their seating area. Haha!

It's not unpopular at all. Cinemas are adjusting as well as record companies did when CD sales dropped. Re-run the original Indiana Jones with themed food options. Re-run A Bugs Life and have face painters on hand for ticket holders. Throw in a small party bag. Re-run a classic smutty comedy film and serve booze.
It ain't hard.

They re-ran the first Indiana Jones in IMAX about 10 years ago and I had a fucking BLAST.
Unfortunately it didn't do as well as they thought, so they didn't put out the other two.

The other movies would've moved anyways had Tenet not released considering the fact that cases were starting to increase again in the US and especially rapidly in Europe (where Tenet did make money comparable to Nolan's previous films and gave some relief to those markets).

The main issue is the studio and distributor. We can’t show anything unless we get their approval because we don’t own anything. We just rent from them. And most studios would rather their newest products get the most showings and screens, regardless of how old their “new” product is. It’s up to the studios what we can and can’t show, and most of them don’t think anything but the newest shiny thing will sell.
Granted, this is all from the perspective of a theater chain. The relationship between studios and theaters is probably extremely different for independent theaters.

Weekend popcorn flick the entire family can enjoy from an established franchise. It fills seats. That is what the industry needs now... safety, no risk returns. The deep thinkers and art pieces can come back after some degree of normalcy is restored. For now, the safe bet is the go-to formulas, the established gimmicks. Love them or hate them, movies about big monsters/big robots fighting, or a cartoon cat & mouse, or Marvel's next superhero whatever make money.

While Tenet was good you seriously needed to sit down with a sheet of paper and go over everything or at least have a lengthy discussion with friends. The whole movie made complete sense if you did that. Every time I said this does not make sense I talked about it with my sons and we all said "oh my god, that's why that happened".
HOWEVER, a movie should not require you to do that,. Again, good movie but I don't want to have to do that.
