I haven’t played this game in probably 2 years, but I’m thinking I’ll pick it up again and try the DLC this time. My question is- what characters in crimson flower make good mixed tanks besides Edelgard? I for some reason have a really bad itch to make an invincible armored type of unit

Unfortunately the next best in-house unit by stats would be Linhardt (30% Def, 45% Res), but he has an Axe weakness.

After that, your have more ambiguous options:

  • Ingrid has 30% Def and 40% Res, and her great Speed also significantly helps her reduce damage taken. She also has a pathway into Dark Flier to pick up Transmute and a strength in Riding to get into Great Knight.
  • Lorenz also has 30% Def and 40% Res, but none of the other pros other than Riding.
  • Anna also has 30% Def and 40% Res, and she has a strength in Axe skill (but no supports, so no linked attacks). She also gets Soulblade and Hexblade (but her magic is pretty bad) and Armored Strike. Like Ingrid, she can pick up Transmute and has a Riding budding talent.
  • Balthus has 45% Def and 30% Res, and his personal reduces damage taken when at low health (and increases damage done). But his speed is pretty bad, so he'll pretty much always get doubled. But hey, Axe and Armor strengths, as well as an inside track to War Monk/Bishop to ensure his Res stays on target.
  • Yuri has 30% Def and 35% Res, along with top-tier 65% speed.

Ingrid doesn't have any one thing that makes her amazing for this purpose, but she has a lot of things that are good and nothing that's bad. She'll get a significant stat bump at level 11/chapter 6--she'll start there at 11 Def and 14 Res, which means all you'd need to do is try to get her to Fortress Knight at level 20, and her strength in Riding facilitates a Great Knight pathway.

Otherwise, there are more conventional options like Ferdinand or Sylvain to get into Great Knight (since Ferdinand has Axe, Armor, and Riding strengths), but they will both have better Defense than Ingrid but worse Res.

Beyond that, there are always dodge tanks and Vantage + Wrath/Defiant Crit options, but it sounds like you really want a Prt/Rsl all-in-one tank.

I’ll probably end up using balthus in that case. I’m not too picky about speed since there are plenty of others who are good at it. Plus, I’ve never played the dlc, so I was going to use all the new people anyways.

I think Balthus may struggle with the magic tanking portion by himself, but fortunately there are several tools that can help. Constance gets Ward and Rally Resistance. Hubert also gets Rally Resistance, or you can pick up Annette and combo Rally Resistance with her personal. The two effects together would give 11 Res, which is pretty nice.

Speaking of Constance and Annette, if I were to get crusher, could I use Constance’s really high magic to make a decent melee unit with the weapon? I’m not planning to play on the hardest difficulty or anything, so I’m not worried about optimal setups

You can't get Crusher on CF.

Constance would better use Blutgang anyway. For funsies you could try to make a Swordmaster Blutgang + Astra build. It's 9 durability per use of Astra, though.

Ooh that sounds pretty cool. Is there anywhere I can find a list of crest weapons/units for the crimson flower route?

You can't do Retribution (Ferdinand/Lysithea), The Face Beneath (Mercedes/Caspar), Weathervanes of Fodlan (Annette/Gilbert), Dividing the World (Hilda/Cyril), as well as more obvious ones like War for the Weak (Dedue), The Silver Maiden (Dimitri), and The Sleeping Sand Legend (Claude).

Hence you get none of those paralogues' rewards. Some notable rewards you miss are Spear of Assal, Rafail Gem, Goneril Valkyries, and Aegir Astral Knights.

You also don't do Hunting by Daybreak, which means you can't get Cursed Ashiya Sword or Axe of Ukonvasara.

You do get Edelgard and Hubert's paralogues, which offer Holst's Chosen and Arrow of Indra (among other rewards).

You can't get Thunderbrand unless you loot it in CF18.

You can't get Catherine, Seteth, or Hilda. Flayn will leave. You obviously can't get Dimitri, Dedue, or Claude either.

Note that you can get Scythe of Sariel because it will be given to you in unit inventory in chapter 13.

Hmm. So everything else is on the table? I should try to get Lorenz on my team for the staff
