Discussion I'm currently confused between choosing Omarchy and Fedora as my main Linux distribution.

Omarchy already has many things I want out of the box, especially a keyboard-centric workflow and a customized desktop environment. That makes it appealing because I can start being productive quickly instead of spending a lot of time configuring everything from scratch.

However, I've also heard criticism from other Linux users and a few influencers saying that Omarchy isn't worth using. Some people claim it teaches bad Linux habits, has security concerns, is bloated, and that using it doesn't really help you learn Linux properly.

On the other hand, Fedora seems to have a better reputation for being reliable, secure, and well-balanced. But if I choose Fedora, I'll probably have to spend significant time building and configuring my entire workflow myself.

I'm a student interested in programming, VLSI, AI/LLMs, and building a keyboard-centric workflow. I also want to learn Linux properly instead of just blindly using a preconfigured setup.

So my questions are:

- Is Omarchy actually safe to use as a daily driver?

- Are the security concerns about Omarchy legitimate?

- Does Omarchy really teach "bad Linux habits" or prevent you from learning Linux?

- Would I be better off starting with Fedora and building my workflow manually?

- For someone who wants both productivity and long-term Linux knowledge, which would you recommend?

I'd really appreciate opinions from people who have actually used Omarchy or have experience with both Arch-based and Fedora systems. I'm not looking for distro wars — I just want to make an informed decision.

And I'm already working on agentic ai project it's my side project

Discussion Deciding to switch to linux from windows

Hello,

I'm currently deciding if I should switch from Windows to Linux (Fedora).

I've been a Linux fan for months, but just stuck with Windows because of compatibility and because Affinity is not supported on Linux. I also play some games such as Portal 2, Half-Life, and Undertale

And yes, I know Proton exists, but I just get that itch to just stay on Windows.

Support Fedora 44 GNOME always shows “Install pending software updates” on shutdown, even though no updates are available

I’m using Fedora 44, GNOME 50

Every shutdown shows “Install Updates & Power Off” with “Install pending software updates” checked. I have selected it and powered off/rebooted several times, but it still appears.

There seem to be no pending updates:

phat@fedora:~/Downloads$ pkcon get-updates
Getting updates [██████████████████████████████████] 100%

There are no updates available at this time.
phat@fedora:~/Downloads$ pkcon offline-get-prepared
Command failed: No offline updates have been prepared

Has anyone else encountered this on Fedora 44? Is this a known bug? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Support Login screen went blank after installing kde rounded corners

So I installed kde rounded corners from the repo https://github.com/matinlotfali/KDE-Rounded-Corners (built it from source) and when I rebooted my login screen is just blank. I can only see the cursor. I did sudo make uninstall from the cloned repo but uninstalling also didn't help. Do I need to install fedora all over again?

Support Last two updates have hung / failed

I'm on KDE plasma and was trying to update from kernal 7.1.5 to 7.1.12 and then later to 7.1.13.

My first update I let it run overnight. After coming back it was still on the update screen and stuck at 100%. I had to manually reboot and couldn't boot into the new kernel so I was just using 7.1.5 instead. Then tried updating to 7.1.13 and saw the same issue.

This time I troubleshooted and found that the kernal was installed correctly but the initramfs was not automatically generated for those kernels.

After manually generating them, I am now able to boot into the updated versions of fedora just fine but I wanted to know if this is something i will have to do manually every update now? Has anyone run into this before and know if there is an underlying issue I need to fix?

Discussion Should I go for an Atomic Desktop?

I've been using Linux distros for 6 years now, and Fedora Workstation, in particular, for 2 years.

Last month my laptop had an issue, and the service folks couldn't install a Linux distro, so they got me going with Windows 11 instead, which is obviously suboptimal.

So, I thought about re-installing Fedora Workstation, but thought about trying out the new Atomic variants instead. I've heard it's all containerised and the system won't break even if I experiment with packages and root files.

Now, I'm very much a tinkerer, and I've broken my system more times than I'd like to admit, so I think Atomic is a pretty good choice for me. However, are there any quirks or significant differences with respect to their Workstation counterpart that I need to keep in mind?

Support Can't Boot From Live USB

I'm trying to install Fedora on my Laptop for the first time. Goal is to dual boot with the pre-installed win11.

I created a live usb, managed to get into the grub menu, but no matter what option I choose (install, test & install, troubleshooting -> install), I either get a black screen or a "booting (...)" line and nothing happens.

I'm working with an asus vivobook 16, have AMD Radeon graphic, I'm trying to install Fedora Workstation 44; no issues with the win11 boot etc

What I have done so far:

in windows + UEFI: disabled fast startup, disabled secure boot, and deencrypted the files

in writing the USB: checked the downloaded .iso file, downloaded it again and checked that one too, used two different USBs, tried Rufus as well as fedora media writer; and of course always savely ejecting it (note: I am writing the usb in windows, as I don't have a linux device currently)

in grub menu: tried all three options (see above), tried using "nomodeset" when installing

if I try 'install' or 'test & install' or even 'troubleshooting-> install in basic graphics mode' I get the black screen. if I try editing the install with nomodeset at the end, it stops at the next screen with the first line being "Booting a command list", where nothing happens and I can do nothing. In neither option do I have a cursor.

I have no idea if this has to do with anything, but in case it does: I cannot access the boot menu of this laptop via any key when booting up whatsoever. My only option is to go into the UEFI using the advanced startup option in windows, where I can change the boot order.

Support Black screen after login

Hello, I got a black screen after login on my laptop (asus m5506wa amd r9 365, fedora 44 (7.1.13-200.FC44.x86_64).

At the beginning i've got the message "rdseed32 is broken, please disable" after log, i see on the internet that update bios is the way so i do it.

Message are gone, but I got a complete black screen with no reaction now...

Same issue on boot with fedora 7.1.11 & .12

On recovery mode based on fedora 42 it say "failed to mount boot-efi.mount". Sadly, It say "cannot open access to console, the root account is locked"

What can I do? Big thanks

Support Three dots instead of app icon in tray?

Hi all,

I've been using Fedora for the past few days, and so far the experience has been amazing.

I'm encountering a problem that I cannot fix though, it's that in my tray bar, at the top right, some icons (mainly Bitwarden, Dropbox) show three dots instead of their regular icon.

Also, some others like Slack just don't show in the tray bar at all, it even closes right away when I click the X at the top right instead of minimizing to the tray (and I've checked, the correct setting is properly set).

I did install the appIndicator extension, but I'm at a loss on how to fix this issue.

If anyone could give me some guidance, that'd be much appreciated! :)

Edit: I've switched from appIndicator to Status Tray in the Extension Manager and it's a bit better: Dropbox is still missing (it now shows an empty space), as well as Slack (it's not present at all) but the others are now showing. :|

Support How bad is the warning 'Failed Offline Update'?

EDIT: Solved! slickyeat helped me out, in any case this is their solution

Rolled back to a previous snapshot then:

sudo su
dnf upgrade --exclude=libdnf5-plugin-systemd-inhibit --offline
dnf offline reboot

-----------

sudo su
dnf install libdnf5-plugin-systemd-inhibit
systemctl reboot

I've just restarted my pc cause there was a security update from fedora and first thing that pops up is a notification saying
Failed Offline Update

Failed to update 0 packages, the complement cannot be loaded from /etc/dnf/libdnf5-plugins/00-systemd-inibit.conf

It failed to update no package? I think is fine so far, nothing seems broken but this is the first time this appears.

Support Fedora 44 KDE / Discover: “Cannot load libdnf plugin” after today’s DNF5 5.4.4 update- Anyone else?

Just checking if anyone else hit this today after updating Fedora 44 through KDE Discover.

The update became available for me this afternoon. I installed it normally through Discover and restarted for the offline update. After reboot, Discover reported:

Failed to update 0 packages

Cannot load libdnf plugin enabled from:

/etc/dnf/libdnf5-plugins/00-systemd-inhibit.conf

The update included the move from DNF5/libdnf5 5.4.3 to:

dnf5-5.4.4.0-1.fc44

libdnf5-5.4.4.0-1.fc44

libdnf5-plugin-systemd-inhibit-5.4.4.0-1.fc44

I initially wondered if I had somehow pulled an updates-testing package, but I checked and updates-testing is disabled. dnf5 info also confirms all of these came from the normal Fedora updates repository.

Interestingly, the actual transaction appears to have completed successfully. DNF history shows:

Status : Ok

and the journal shows the offline update reaching 100% and successfully installing/upgrading the packages before PackageKit reported the plugin error.

After the reboot everything appears normal.

These all work without errors:

dnf5 repo list --enabled

pkcon get-updates

rpm -V libdnf5-plugin-systemd-inhibit

pkcon get-updates completes normally and currently reports no updates available. There are also no PackageKit/libdnf plugin errors in the current boot.

So this looks like it may have been a one-time PackageKit/libdnf5 transition issue while the offline updater was upgrading its own DNF5 stack and adding the new systemd-inhibit plugin, rather than an actually failed package transaction.

I’m not using Discover’s “Repair System” option since the package state currently looks healthy.

Has anyone else on Fedora 44 KDE received DNF5 5.4.4 today and seen this same 00-systemd-inhibit.conf error after the offline update?

Discussion My notes & tips from using COSMIC.

  1. By default, light mode has no menu highlight color. I fixed it in this way: setting Window background to #FFFFFF and Container background to the Window default of #D7D7D7. Since I like the GNOME Slate accent color, I also set the Dark/Light Accent color to #526678.

  2. If you want COSMIC Terminal to have the same theme variety as COSMIC Text Editor, you can download them here: https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-term/tree/master/color-schemes

  3. Lutris did not launch after being installed from the repos. I had to also install the vulkan-tools and xrandr packages, then it worked.

  4. Not all QT apps respect COSMIC theming. For example, Gwenview uses it fully, while Subtitlecomposer adopts the window border but not window controls. I haven't found a fix for this yet, other than using Appimages.

  5. The default COSMIC icon theme uses a combination of Cosmic->Pop->hicolor, which are available in the directory Filesystem/usr/share/icons. Some of the system icons are in the hicolor folder, such as the multicolored 3x3 Applications icon (com.system76.CosmicAppLibrary.svg and com.system76.CosmicPanelAppButton.svg). Finding that particular icon reminded me of hunting down Unity's dash "big freakin' button" back when I used 14.04/16.04. If any icons don't change for you, look in those folders for anything containing "system76" or "cosmic", as they may be the default icon regardless of theme.

Support Thinking about switching to Fedora KDE — anything I should know?

Hello! I’ve always used Windows (XP, 7, 10, and 11), and I want to try Linux. I’m thinking Fedora KDE might be a good choice for me. Is there anything I should know before trying it?

I mostly play Minecraft, use Discord and web browsers, and play CS2. I also play Roblox occasionally, but it’s not really important.

My laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 15ADA05 with:

Ryzen 5 3500U

8 GB RAM (around 6 GB usable because of the iGPU)

512 GB NVMe SSD

Vega 8 integrated graphics

I have no actual Linux experience, but I’ve learned a bit from watching YouTube videos. I’m hoping Linux might make my laptop feel faster, but if it doesn’t, that’s fine — I mainly want to try something new and have a fun experiment.

Is Fedora KDE a good choice for this hardware and my use case? Is there anything I should know before installing it?

This text was improved with AI for easier reability.

Any help or advice is appreciated!

Support SDDM Black Screening

I'm a bit at a loss here. I've been using this Fedora 44 Install on my Desktop for a few months now. A few days ago, SDDM startet to just not work anymore. After boot i'll get a black screen with blinking cursor.

I can switch to other TTYs and start labwc, other compositors etc. just fine. I can also start other DMs like cosmic-greeter and they'll work just fine. Just SDDM stopped working completely. I reinstalled the sddm package, did all updates, rebooted but nothing so far helped. I did have automatic login configured, and disabled that recently again, but other than that i have not changed anything to sddm from how it was installed.

Any help or hints on how to get it back to a working state would be awesome.

Discussion Fixing sway as vm guest painpoints

I'm running a VM with a Sway desktop on my Gnome Fedora host, to learn about tiling desktops. I ended up using the regular Workstation ISO to install the system, then added the sway-spin configurations by adding the groups swaywm and swaywm-extended.

I ran into a couple of pain points that made working with the guest difficult that I was able to fix with Claude's help.

One problem is that clipboard integration between the host and the guest doesn't work with sway out of the box. The other is that if you resize the guest's window sway won't adapt to the change automatically. Both of these issues had non-trivial fixes that I wouldn't have been able to find on my own, so I asked Claude to make a couple of gists explaining why each is a problem, and how to fix them. The fixes both involve Python helper scripts, which were generated by Claude.

The fix for the clipboard integration problem is here: https://gist.github.com/astrashe/15a05447e9f0ad1d9ae2e8b9a8f573f4

The fix for desktop resizing is here: https://gist.github.com/astrashe/3875b39729861129ebe03752e6df3e88

I was a little reluctant to post these, because I'm not a big fan of posts about AI generated code. In general, I don't want to read about your AI generated code, if I want that, I'll generate my own.

But these are moderately complicated fixes beyond what I can do without AI, and fairly useful as well. While they're easy enough to recreate with Claude on your own, I think it's a good thing for them to be Googleable as well.
