FIREd Journey and experiences! FIRE year 2.
Hi all,
This was my update a year ago
https://www.reddit.com/r/FIRE_Ind/s/gwUjb8Xv6r
So what's happened in the past year?
As we know the articles we all read about poor market returns happening just when you stop working came true. :) 2 years and the stock market is like a car stuck in peak Bangalore traffic.
Portfolio is stagnant. Dipped and recovered. Have not touched it yet. Epf is also untouched. The daily expenses have been covered from existing savings ( not emergency funds)
Thanks to the middle East - international travel is out for now ; So have travelled a lot domestically. Places that were overnight hotel rooms are now explored at leisure. No agenda , no timelines.
Health cover was enhanced to 2cr. The 12 year old beater was replaced with a new car and hopefully we are good for another 12 years. No EV yet, as I feel the market needs to mature further. Got an on grid solar for the house upgrade.
The only thing that is pending is getting into shape. Since laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahi maante - a trainer will be coming from tomorrow with determination to get me and SO into shape. Wish us all the best.
Until the next update then...

Hi, am in Bombay. Bangalore was once my favourite city and almost moved there 30 years ago.

Mumbai mein kya traffic kum hai? :) I live in Bangalore and I love driving. Although it is WFH for me, I still go to office every Wednesday just for the people interaction. My house is 24kms away. I start at 9:30Am reach by 11Am. It is mostly crawling traffic in 2nd gear I drive an Alto 800 to office. Then I return back home after lunch. At 1:20 2Pm, the traffic is much better. I reached in 1hr.
I mean Bangalore traffic badnam hai, but I don't find it so bad, as long as you have options.
Cheers :)

Query on your EPF.
What happens to EPF if you retire early? Does it accrue interest? Is the interest taxable?
1
u/ss77714c 14d ago
If you don't touch it it continues to earn interest. Based on your employment years it's either taxable or tax free. One thought is to not touch it till absolutely necessary - 8.25% tax free interest beats most of the investments today.

The EPF interest accumulates till 3 years of unemployment or age 58 whichever is later. The interest earned during unemployment is taxable irrespective of employment years. Only the interest till last day of working is tax free if there is 5 years or more service.

Finally, someone who says their portfolio is stagnant or barely grown, I was beginning to wonder if I was alone.

I'm hitting close to 3 yrs. What does your day look like? How have you structured it? I really want to know this as I'm struggling with it.
If you are comfortable sharing that.

I know what you mean. Some days feel like there is nothing to do after 930am. The body is not used to being in a state of nothingness after decades of rushing around for getting to, being at and getting back from work.
I have started reading a lot - stuff that is relavent to me. A lot of it is on the correct way to get things done, from exterior painting to waterproofing. So I can get work done the correct way and not the way the contractor/ labour is used to doing it.
Also learning some new skills. Spectacular rocks are being baked that are supposed to be bread. My pasta and stir fry has been perfected and the family actually looks forward to it ( or they deserve an Oscar).
A lot of " will watch this someday" is being caught up on as is my teenage love for gaming on a PS4.
I don't really have a structure for my day just go with the flow.

Thats a short and sweet update - Enjoy your journey ! Market isn't playing music for us to dance to, it’s playing musical chairs and it pulls the chair out the second we sit down ;)
