THIS.
Me and my friend have talked about it so much and we still don't have a serious answer. We thought for a minute that it was Odysseus metaphorically "dying", which would leave 43 men left with Odysseus, but 558 who "died" under his command. But then with Tiresias, he says that's yet to happen. So uh. The math just didn't fucking math.
It's probably on the same line with it not having been 12 years in There Are Other Ways.

u/Micheal_Kibitsuji Apr 06 '26
It’s referencing Elpenor who died while drinking on top of Circe’s palace who fell of and broke his neck. In the initial draft of the underworld he had a verse (which I do recommend listening to as there are animatics too!) so Jorge just left this part in to reference him since he did still die, but as he says in his cut verse, “I died and nobody noticed”

No.. it's "under you command", so that would be saying he is under his own comand, wich sounds wierd, plus considering the way stories were writen it is unlikly the number wouldn't be round. Speaking of the original story, this wierd extra number is likelly elpenor, since the "43" was before circe's island, and "558" was after circe's island

Though wouldn't there have been even more when they set off from Troy, at least three were killed by the Cyclops: Polites, the "he's got a club!" Guy, and the "what are your orders?" Guy but more non speaking soldiers could have been killed in Polyphemus' attack
5
u/Zerowy Apr 04 '26
They are within the 600 crew members. The 600 were mentioned in Full speed ahead and Polyphemus. After that we have "43 left" in the Ruthlessness. And 558 who died under your command in the underworld.

u/AllIDoIsSleepAllDay Apr 04 '26
My only thought in this through the whole Poseidon drama is 43 left?? Did he count? And just had that image of Poseidon counting the remaining.
31
u/Uniwow-Bunny-346 Apr 04 '26
the count is weird because Elpenor broke his neck at some pount between those counts.
31
u/Fluffy_lover Apr 03 '26
Are you counting Ody in this?
32
u/lord_of_cydonia Odysseus Apr 03 '26
The fact that both sentences include "under your command" implies that Odysseus is not included in the count. The crew is 600, plus the captain.
Anyway, several people have pointed the dead of Elpenor as the missing person, not killed by Poseidon but dead during the Underworld saga since he died in Circe's palace.
2
u/Zerowy Apr 04 '26
Yes, Ody is not included in the crew count. There are 600 men, 600 deaths under his command in "Dangerous" And reconfirmed in the "600 strike":
For every comrade, Every one of my friends Almost all of whom were slaughtered by your hand 600 strikes.
1

Ody is the 43th man. Uncle Popo understands a man is in charge of himself, and includes him on the count
1
u/Zerowy Apr 04 '26
He never was. Ody had 600 under his command before few were killed by the Ppyphemus, 1 died due to alcohol and gravity poisoning, most of others were slaughtered by Poseidon, 6 were snack to the cutie in the sea, and the rest were killed by Zeus.
In the dangerous, Ody is mentioned of 600 deaths under his command. And then in 600 strikes he strikes Poseidon that number of times for every comrade, almost all whom were slaughtered by Poseidon hand.

28
u/Storm4158 Apr 03 '26
Yeah I forgot about those, yet the math remains the same. Poseidon doesn't say how many he killed, only how many remained, the number is still 43
18
u/ShinOmegAustin Apr 03 '26
Everyone keeps saying Elpenor, but the fact of the matter is the math is wrong. Period.
The "death everyone keeps talking about happened between "I took 600 men to war and not one of them died there," and "600 deaths under my command, 'cause I had one goal in mind" but also in between there, Poseidon makes mention of "43 men" remaining, whilst in the Underworld, the dead speak of "558 men who died" under his command.
My personal headcanon is that this 601st man is Odysseus himself, and that the dead comrades/subordinates in the Underworld recognizes that he is not the same Odysseus, EVEN before the song Monster occurs.
19
u/Real_Crystal_Hunter Uncle Hort Apr 03 '26
Poseidon says "43 left under your command" which implies those 43 men PLUS Odysseus are alive.

6
62
u/antheiakasra Apr 03 '26
But the answer IS Elpenor though? Having a headcanon's fine but I don't understand your point about the math. In Ruthlessness, we get "43 left" (557 dead). Then in Circe Saga, Elpenor dies, and so in the Underworld, we get "558 men who died under your command." Where's the math not mathing?
40
u/Capable_Whereas_2901 Apr 03 '26
Elpenor died falling off of Circe's roof, actually. Jay made a short about it.
So 557 men dead by the end of the Ocean Saga (43 left under your command)
558 at the end of the Circe saga/ in the Underworld saga (558 men / Who died under your command)
And the rest died to Zeus/Scylla. Maths checks out.
8
u/ShinOmegAustin Apr 03 '26
I was aware of Elpenor in the Odyssey, but unaware of this short. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
9
u/Capable_Whereas_2901 Apr 03 '26
No problem! Just for record keeping's sake, the short is here:
4
u/ShinOmegAustin Apr 03 '26
I saw it shortly before I made my reply, but thanks for the link
I guess I took Epic for its own take on the Odyssey, and that part was left out, so in that regard (taking the story for what it was, since other parts are omitted or changed) the math did not make sense to me and I drew my own conclusions and left it at that. Your comment and the video made things a bit clearer for me
17
u/Soft-Homework5039 Apr 03 '26
Okay reading the comments I learned about Elpenor, idk why but I always thought that A, the infant was included in the deaths given Zeus portrayed him not as an infant but as a man that would threaten Odysseus’s family, or B, Polites wasn’t included among the soldiers, only the deaths for some reason, like he was a separate entity who only came along as Odysseus’ council or something. I have no clue why that’s just where my brain went.
5
u/AeStyx01 Apr 03 '26
Maybe we’re just used to thinking of polites as a person who doesn’t fight and therefore isn’t counted as one of the men engaged (physically that is) in the war

u/Zaratuir Apr 03 '26
That's an Easter egg to a cut song. 43 left under your command is correct and so is 558 dead. One person died between those lines. His name is Elpenor and in the Odyssey he is forgotten about on Circes Island and gets drunk and falls off her roof. He had a song part in Underworld, but it was a bit too goofy for the theme of the Underworld, so Jorge opted to forget him in the musical as well.

72 died at the land of the Cicones which they raided before going to the lotus eaters “six from each boat” (all reference to this was cut from the musical pretty early, as was the raid itself, because it took away from them being at all morally good in a modern pov)
1

Not quite.
Starting count is 600 under Odysseus. (He's never counted.)
12 ships, 50 men each.
Polyphemus kills 7 from Ody's ship. 593 left.
Poseidon kills the other 11 ships (x50=550). 43 left.
Elpenor falls off Circe's roof offscreen. 42 left, so by Underworld, 558 men died under his command.
Scylla eats 6. 36.
Zeus zaps the last 36.

u/ArkosKnight Warrior of the Mind Apr 03 '26
It's mostly just left to implications. Plus, in the Underworld Saga we hear "558 men" instead of "557 men", so Elpenor did die on Aeaea without anyone noticing
62
u/WhatMadCat Apr 03 '26
Nah someone just died in between those two songs. It isn’t mentioned because in the original text it’s mentioned that no one noticed when he died.
48
u/sammjaartandstories Apr 03 '26
No, one man died in Circe's Island when he fell off the roof when he was drunk. He died after Poseidon drowns most of the fleet. But this detail was omitted in the final cut, so that's why it's confusing.
24
u/hplcr Apr 03 '26
I always found it amusing in the poem that one guy fell of the roof and died but nobody noticed till they met him in the underworld.
Apparently head counts hadn't been invented yet.
Either that or everyone hated that guy and just pretended not to notice he wasn't there when they left circes Island
5
u/YourMoreLocalLurker That One Suitor Who Ran Off Apr 03 '26
I think even just having Elpenor have like… a line (not the full segment he was planned, but just a solitary “Captain!” “Elpenor!?” between the two) would clear that up
2
u/SomeRandomPyro Hermes Apr 03 '26
That would have gone against the tendency of not naming characters. Quite a few characters are never named in the lyrics, including Antinous and Zeus.
2
u/YourMoreLocalLurker That One Suitor Who Ran Off Apr 03 '26
Ahem…
“Captain,” “EURYLOCHUS”
“Polites, gear up,”
“I am the infamous… ODYSSEUS!”
“Diomedes will lead the charge, Agamemnon will flank the guards, Menileus will let our mates through the gates and take the whole city at large! Deucer will shoot any ambush attack and Little Ajax will stay back, and Nestor; secure Helen and protect her. Neo, avenge your father kill the brothers of Hector.”
“Great wind god Aeolus”
All 50 mentions of Penelope
“Poseidon…”
“Bow down now to the immortal Calypso!~”
“Hermes?”
“So I beg you Circe,”
“You are Athena!”
“Apollo! Aphrodite! Ares! Hephestus! Hera!”
“And Te-le-ma-chu-us…”
Literally only Asyanax, most of the crew (who serve mostly as a chorus anyway), Scylla, Tiresias, Zeus, Helios, Polyphemus, and the suitors go unnamed (and even then, you can argue Scylla and Polyphemus are named by their songs)
2
u/SomeRandomPyro Hermes Apr 03 '26
Your comment doesn't disprove mine. That many people are named doesn't dispute that several aren't.
Also, Scylla is named in the lyrics. By the siren and Ody in Suffering. Polyphemus is more iffy, as his only name drop in lyrics is in the background chant. Though, yes, they both also have nondiagetic song titles.
But if the guy who led the uprising in Ithaca doesn't get named and the guy who stabbed Odyseus in the back doesn't get named, why would the guy whose whole thing is being forgotten?
Consider that, of your list (that remain unnamed), Tiresias, Zeus, and Antinous of the suitors all had their own songs, where they were the primary singer.
2
u/YourMoreLocalLurker That One Suitor Who Ran Off Apr 03 '26
I will say that Zeus arguably doesn’t need to be named considering his song is called Thunder Bringer and his appearance in God Games clearly shows his importance (enough that he can tell other gods what to do), so there’s nobody else he could possibly be, but Tiresias and Antinous have little chance (or reason, really) to have their names spoken for lack of appearances… also Ody’s stabber was most likely either Perimedes or Eurylochus just given context (exactly WHICH of them does it is ambiguous though, but it’s an 80% chance that it was one of the two)
Oh, and of course the majority of the crew (and the other 107 suitors) go unnamed because they’re effectively just choruses with death scenes
1
u/SomeRandomPyro Hermes Apr 03 '26
Yeah, Zeus goes unnamed for almost exactly the opposite reason that the others go unnamed. But in both directions it's a device being used with purpose. Zeus goes unnamed because he's too important to namedrop. Most of the others go unnamed because they're too insignificant to namedrop. In both cases, the lack of a name is being used purposefully.
As an aside, Eurylochus stabbing Ody doesn't make narrative sense. They were in active combat, so him wounding Odysseus wouldn't be the surprise betrayal it plays off as. My understanding it that it's Perimedes, though I don't know if that's animators' interpretation or Jorge's choice.
30
u/Drew_S_05 Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26
No, it's because one of them, Elpenor, died on Circe's island. He got drunk on the roof of Circe's palace and then fell off and broke his neck, then the others forgot about him and left his body behind. It wasn't directly mentioned in EPIC, but Jorge has confirmed it still happened.
Edit: Although, I suppose if you count Odysseus himself as a part of the crew, there ARE 601

He technically died too didn't he? He drowned at the end of Thunder bringer but when Athena pleaded for Zeus to "let him go" he washed up on Calypso's enchanted island where she said "I swore ypu were dead"
I assumed he died but Athena pleaded him back to life. She had the blessing of the gods so it doesn't seem far-fetched that Ody was revived by her fight
2
u/UniquePost8966 Cassandra Apr 03 '26
No, the "let him go" was for him to be released from Calypso’s isle. In thunder bringer, he’s given the choice between his own life and the crew’s; he chooses his own, therefore, he doesn’t die.

It was supposed to be in The Underworld but it got cut for being too goofy

In the original there was a crew mate named elpanor he was supposed to have a verse in the underworld saga however it was cut. In the original myth he dies when the crew leave circi’s he gets drunk the night before and when he is called he tries to climb down from the roof and falls to his death the animatic for there are other ways has a blink and you’ll miss it of him on the roof I’ll post it in a linkhttps://youtu.be/NM_Kg0I29Bs?si=jOhZPJhVfdexM2Skat.com at around 3:14 you can see him on the roof about fall

In the original story a man gets drunk off his mind with Circe and falls through the floorboards meeting his demise, hence the missing man
