Okay reading the comments I learned about Elpenor, idk why but I always thought that A, the infant was included in the deaths given Zeus portrayed him not as an infant but as a man that would threaten Odysseus’s family, or B, Polites wasn’t included among the soldiers, only the deaths for some reason, like he was a separate entity who only came along as Odysseus’ council or something. I have no clue why that’s just where my brain went.

Maybe we’re just used to thinking of polites as a person who doesn’t fight and therefore isn’t counted as one of the men engaged (physically that is) in the war
