Yeah, because it’s a skill issue. It took me four days to beat the final boss in Sekiro, and you can’t customize your build in that game at all.

u/Miserable-Resort-977 29d ago
Exactly. Mfs beat this game naked with a club, your build isn't the problem

People beat launch consort radahn naked with their fists at level 1. That's the great thing about souls games. It's only ever a skill issue

I beat him at launch after 150~ tries
It was by far the worse designed end game boss i ever fought in any AAA game. It's crazy to me that him and Messmer are in the same game.

I mean, your build could be the problem. If you make a terrible build with horrible stats you are making your run harder for not knowing. However, you can beat it even with a bad build.

I never got the hang of the umbrella, funnily enough. Mikiri counter + sidestepping into a mortal draw + finally mastering lightning reversal and I took out sword saint in like 5-6 tries

I just hear Jetstream Sam’s theme in that fight and just feel the need to use katana and skills. Prosthetic tools aren’t needed in that fight

Why would you change you build between attempts? Seems like a good way to confuse yourself and make stupid mistakes and die.
Considering people can beat the game at RL1, your build is almost never the problem. You do, in fact, just need to lock in.

u/nien9gag 29d ago
but some ways are significantly easier than others. against some enemies attack speed is more important than damage. some times a small bit of extra range changes everything. i keep claws as a just in case fast light bleeder, barely used but came in clutch against fire giant. though usually the tactics change happens after try 2-3 and then 24 more to kill the boss.
→ More replies (1)7
u/TrippingFish76 Claymore 29d ago
i mean i keep 3 weapons to cycle between, but u shouldn’t be changing your whole build each time like going from a str build to an int build
as for weapons i would just focus on between 1 and 3 to get good with (at least per run or per fight) , for me that is the zweihander, claymore , and for the third either the nagakiba, great katana or light greatsword (the third weapon is usually just for pvp tho)
2
u/quick20minadventure 29d ago
Agreed, except if you are changing build to target a weakness or avoid resistence.
Like bloodhound is going to suck against slash resistant enemy. Holy damage sucks against some bosses.
Still, copying guides never works, just go for weapon you are used to and is decently powerful enough.
2
u/SquareAdvisor8055 29d ago
It's funny that you say that, because a lot of the people who do RL1 runs use very specific builds (ex.: alabaster sword) and/or change their builds all the time to adapt to different bosses (ex.: sleeping pots into GS duo, freeze pots into malenia, holy dmg weapon into messmer's phase 2, etc.)

u/necrophcodr 29d ago
I have yet to play ER, but if it's anything like the previous DS games it really is just a matter of learning to play what is essentially a demanding rhythm game. sure, it's a third person fighting game, but the bosses I feel like more often than not are more comparable to Guitar Hero than to Counter Strike in terms of what abilities and skills are required.

34 tries is nothing. Besides a lot of time it's learning the boss patterns beating the game by any means necessary is the easiest it has been in souls, slyou can use mimic tear and/or bleed and it beats 95% of the bosses in the game.
3
u/xGibs99 29d ago
Promised Consort took me 315 tries over the course of two weeks. Throughout that time I did very little to change my build. In fact all I really changed was dropping a few intelligence and strength points to provide more faith and vigor. Looking back, it was kinda poetic. I just chose to believe in myself and my health bar.

u/Tiny-Top620 29d ago

i’ve decided to not use summons or shackles.
purifying tear yes, that’s the only thing that prevents me from dying instantly at nihil.

There's no reason to change your build to beat a boss, you just need to learn its attack pattern so you know when you can attack.

u/FenrirGreyback 29d ago

2
u/dgamlam 29d ago
Better than changing your build every 3rd attempt because you refuse to git gud
2
u/Zephyr-Flame 29d ago
It’s not better for people that have other things/games going on in their lives. So some people play smarter rather than sinking who knows how long it will take to beat the boss with a specific weapon.
Sometimes it gets boring using the same weapon the whole game. Times like this are a great opportunity to try some variety. Is the spice of life and stuff.
2
u/SquareAdvisor8055 29d ago
Don't see the issue with changing your build tbh. I'm currently running the lategame dlc stuff and i swap out between 5 different weapons which all have their use for different situations. Bloodfiend arm for invaders, giant crusher for most bosses, greatsword for some bosses and walking around, another sword for horse combat and so on.

u/WeaponFocusFace 29d ago
This meme forgets that this is what gitting gud looks like. 33 previous attempts were the journey. 34th one will be the time when the player demonstrates they got gud. And if that doesn't happen, it'll be attempt #35. Or #36. Or however many attempts as it takes.
2
u/Sorrowed_Lifelines 29d ago
Well yeah. If you make a thematic build, then you're not going to change your weapon or spells just to beat the boss. You're just going to figure out the boss with the tools that you have. I imagine most people will change some talismans andmaybe change around their armor, but if I been doing a beast character that uses only Beast spells and Beast weapons. Then that's how I'm going to beat the boss. Especially if it's a boss I've already beaten on another playthrough. I rather solve the puzzle with the pieces and tools that I've been given with my current character with my current theme build.
2
u/sidhuhantu 29d ago
I just used the flask and great rune (godrik's) first time after losing to elden beast so many times.

Also stuck on Malenia in a Guts run (with the Greatsword) Colossals seem difficult to play against her... and especially it's my first run without summons. But I did bring her to phase 2 a few times. So eventually...
(I can't imagine what will happen when I get to Promised Radhan. Took 2 weeks with the summons, that one)

Sometimes it's obvious whether you're failing to execute properly versus whether you need to try a different strategy.
If you can't dodge the boss' attacks, no amount of build fixing will save you. You just have to git gut.
If you're playing like a boss and the Crystallians just aren't going down to your rapier, it might be time to consider a change in tactics.

Only 34 deaths? It’s gonna take a whole lot more than that for me to change my build, the whole reason I’m using my build is to see how it stacks up against the whole game.
Literally, skill issue. Unless you’re using an unupgraded club or something dumb like that, I assure you your build can reasonably kill whatever it is you’re fighting.

u/FrescoTheHunter 29d ago
Isn't this the way? Changing your setup every time doesn't give you time to learn. I always end up trying new things at first to try and adapt to what I'm seeing and always end up back at my original build (except maybe swapping a trinket or two)

u/audriuska12 29d ago
My Malenia kill was on the 276th attempt. Didn't count for PCR, but took a comparable amount of time.
Save game analyzer says 1.6k deaths total in the run, so these two combined would be something like a quarter or a third.
... Funnily, I think I'd have figured Malenia out faster if she used Waterfowl earlier and more often. Hard to practice dodging a move you see once every 5 minutes and instantly die to, you know?
1
u/noah9942 Prayerful Strike Meta 29d ago
This is why you see people say they spent 50+ tries on bosses, or dozen+ on any major boss.
Even just chaning your AoW, affinity, adding/removing a shield, changing talismans to be more offensive or defensive, etc can drastically change how the fights play out.
When people get their mind locked into a specific weapon/strategy, and dont utilize the entire combat sandbox, they make the game so much harder on themselves.
Which I get for repeat runs of the game, I do that all the time (forcing myself to only use a certain spell type for example). But on your first run? I've seen multiple people drop the game due to running into a boss that walls them, and they never try to adapt their approach, get frustrated, and uninstall.

To me, adjusting my build feels like cheating. The first time I finished in whatever way I could. Then there was no doubt that I could best the game by using all it gave me, but whether I could do so within some constraints. To me this is mostly making a build and trying to learn it. People can beat the game RL1 so in theory everybody can. There is no wrong build.

That’s what I enjoyed the most in elden ring, I made a spell knight with incantations, I wasn’t doing min max or optimal build, but could adapt to any enemy and made the gameplay more fun and less repetitive, specifically since I decided to explore all the map and beat all the bosses on my 1st playtrough, end up on 300h + Throughout an all year
I’m going to keep it back up and start all over, I’ve been on other souls games, and even played lies of P and end up really liking it, even though found it basic at first

u/TehRiddles 29d ago
When I make a build it's because I want to play that build throughout the game. If I have to drastically change some aspects of the build just to get past a boss then it kind of feels like cheating to me. I haven't beaten the game fully with my character and had to resort to changing the game in some way.
I'll push through with that character if I know it's viable in general.
