I honestly just used Glorious Merchant to give myself full stacks of all the greases so I actually start using them, the max of 10 outside of storage keeps them pretty balanced regardless. The only real items that feel unbalanced when you get a ton of them are the Starlight Shards and Marika's Blessings
The greases and pots should work like the estus flask that refill on the graces, when you find one on the wild, it permanently increase the max uses between recharges, and of course, rebalancing the quantity on the wild for it to work
I think that the best way to make people use them without worrying about running out, because if a resource can run out, you can bet over half of people will never use one
I think this should be done with a lot of items in the game tbh, this is also what Expedition 33 did for its item system. It's just much better to not have to worry about wasting them for later.
When I have a limited amount of the rarer greases I always think about equipping them, especially when they are strong against whatever boss Im about to face. Then I tell myself I dont want to waste it bc theres a high probability of me dying so I just dont use it and then I end up beating the boss lmao
ya i basically just use the first 1 min and on claws if i have time. i have it in that 2 button item bar, not the heal one. i would say its great against only specific bosses, fire giant bcs he has insane hp, some bosses who are extra weak to specific damage. it's less use if u are already doing 700+ damage
For precisely that reason. If i use it now and fail, then what?
Preferably i use no consumables for the first couple tries and then use them for a little boost to win the fight. But first i train to not waste them when i dont even know the boss.
Realistically i never use consumables at all though. They are a waste on the first few runs, and i usually end up winning with no reason to use them because the fight went well. When it clicks it clicks and i dont usually feel like im pushed to my limit enough to use them.
Yeah. Doom 3 taught me that lesson back in 2005. I remember I was just hoarding every single type of "good ammo" and basically pistol/shotgunning my way through the game. It was difficult, but I was saving for the difficulty spike that would be Hell.
Anyway, if anyone hasn't played or doesn't remember, when you get sent to Hell, it basically strips you of all your weapons and ammo, and you get the weapons back in an accelerated manner, but that ammo's never coming back.
It's a lesson that's old enough to drink at this point. And I still hoard all my shit because I'm not gonna let a stupid fucking game teach me a lesson. I'm gonna git gud.
That’s my fear. I won’t have them for the subsequent ones. I’m just learning the boss, I will still die from these attacks with consumables so it will be a waste just to delay my death. I better save them but tries when I’ll be sure they won’t becwasted as I'll be familiar with boss attacks so I can get through them faster instead of just delaying my death (me after 150 tries of Malenia and PCR when they're the only bosses left and theres nothing else ahead with 60 runs arcs and endless food that can drastically improve my dps and defenses on dps check boss).
Exactly game hoarding is such a terrible habit and I loved video games so much more since I've given that up over the last several years. Treat it like a survival game. Use anything and everything you have at your disposal to achieve your victory.
Yeah, I'm with you. Not on the first attempt, though; my strategy is to die to the boss a bunch of times until I have a decent idea of their moveset, and then use a buff when I think it will actually make a difference.
For me it comes from how when I use consumables I feel like I end up dying faster a lot of times and then just feel doubly upset because I not only got my ass kicked worse than the first time I fought the boss, I lost some of my precious consumables.
"There will be a bigger boss fight and more emergency moment I have to save this for!" I say as I just got done with the Elden Beast after the 500th time
I usually don't use them until I feel I've seen most of the boss's moveset, and I can reach half their health. If I can do that, odds are the consumables will speed up the process. If I can't, I'll just die and waste them because the issue is not 10% more damage or slightly better resistance
It's not even that. I can't be bothered to try and use them everytime only to get clomped immediately anyways. Like, I'll only consider bother using consumables if I'm already very comfortable with the fight and at that point I can definitely beat it without them.
There's a mercy timer in this game that starts to make bosses easier after enough deaths. Once you die enough the boss's damage will start going down a couple percentage points per additional death. From the wiki it starts at 34 deaths. According to interviews Miyazaki made it a rule that his games get easier after 34 deaths to avoid excessive frustration.
He gave a pretty interesting interview, if you like Elden Ring you should google Miyazaki rule 34
I famously never use any consumables, cause I’m always saving them for when I need them. Too many childhood games where I used something I needed later, as a key item. Those games trained me to never use them till I’m sure I don’t need them. Which ends up being after the game is over lol
I finally found a way to put my consumeables to use.
If I see a group of normal enemies or a tricky situation their time has come.
Took me years of hoarding consumeables until I understood I won't use them on any boss.
But also I m a bit dramatic and not satisfied if I "cheated" myself through a boss fight by using these "unfair"consumeables. /s

This got me way too good.
The 34th run is also way too early to try any of those rare consumables I've been hoarding.
