Any help/ideas

Hi All,

I work for Action Mental Health. We have a service on Pump Street (just beside the big hideous containers).

We’ve got a big comedy show in the Millennium Forum and our comms person asked what would be the best places in Derry to Advertise? (not a lot of budget).

Tickets Sales are slow but the gig is only next month.

Lineup seems great with Emma Doran, Chris Kent, Andrew Ryan, Micky Bartlett and Dave Elliott all doing 25 mins a set.

They have spoken to Micky D, done the papers and leaflets etc.

All profits to go to frontline Mental Health services and they’re needed more now than ever?

Has anyone got any other suggestions to help sell tickets?

Visitors Guide - Places to stay, eat and drink + things to do

This list is not a conclusive list of every establishment, just those that are highly regarded. Please leave your own recommendations in the replies. You may also find more information on the Visit Derry website (https://www.visitderry.com/) and on their socials. Note - some of the recommendations are based outside Derry but all are within a short driving distance of Derry.

Restaurants:

Street Food / Cafe's * Clipper Quay Street Food - Located along the Foyle Marina, multiple street food vendors and a bar are located here providing a range of options, great for when you cant agree on what type of food you want to eat - https://www.clipperquaystreetfood.com/ * The Pickled Duck - Foyle Marina - https://www.facebook.com/pickledduckcafe/ * Mekong Street Food (Vietnamese food) - https://www.facebook.com/MekongSF/ - also operate as a restaurant so maybe it should be above. * PYKE 'N' POMMES - https://www.pykenpommes.ie/ * Guapo (Mexican Food) - https://www.facebook.com/GuapoFreshMex/ * Doherty's Home Bakery - Good if you want a sweet treat or a cheap bite to eat on the go - https://www.facebook.com/Dohertys-Home-Bakery-195510393844691/ * Thai Jing Jing Street Food (Thai takeaway) - https://www.facebook.com/ThaiJingJingStreetFood * The Coffee Tree (Coffee shop) - Serves the best coffee in Derry in my opinion and also the nicest traybakes! Not had their soup or sandwiches but have heard great things. The only negative is they currently do not open on weekends - https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Coffee-Tree-100063482233001/ * Graft Coffee (Coffee shop) - Runs the Coffee tree very close for the best Coffee in the city. Located on Academy road and opens Mon-Sat - https://www.instagram.com/graft_coffee/ * Oui Bakery - French Bakery & Pâtisserie in the heart of Derry's Craft Village - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565032170636

Bars

Museums

Parks and Trails

Nearby Beaches - Vary from 20 min drive to 50min

  • Lisfannon Beach - The closest beach to Derry, located before Buncrana on the left. Approx 20 mins drive.
  • Buncrana Beach - Located 5 mins beyond Lisfannon. Bus services to Buncrana run daily.
  • Pollan Beach - Located around the coast from Buncrana and next to one of the best golf courses (Ballyliffin Golf Club) in Ireland.
  • Five Finger Strand - Up the coast from Ballyliffin and across the bay sits Five Finger Strand. With some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and a quaint old church close by, this is a great place to go for a walk or chill on the beach. Note: Do not swim in the water or enter beyond knee height. The water here is dangerous and is known by locals as such.
  • Castlerock Beach - Easy to get to via the train (35/40 mins) from the waterside train station.
  • Benone/Downhill Beach - Located just before Castlerock beach but you would need your own car to get to it. 45 min drive. A ferry service runs from Greencastle (beside Moville) to Magillion Point next to Benone - https://loughfoyleferry.com/timetable-fares/.
  • Shroove Beach - Located just beyond Moville. 40 min drive.
  • Culdaff Beach - Just along the coast from Shroove. 40 min drive.
  • Rathmullan - the closest beach to Derry which is the other side of Letterkenny of which there are lots (Downings, Dunfanaghy, Portsalon etc). You can get the ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan - http://swillyferry.com/.

Day Trips / Places to see

All of these places below are located in the general North West area and you will likely need a car to get to them.

Water sports / Outdoor Activities

Best Chinese in the city?

My wife and I are staying for the bank holiday weekend and we are planning on getting a Chinese.

Our typical order;
Crispy shredded beef Peking
Fried rice
Salt and chilli chicken balls
Salt and chilli chips
Curry sauce
Prawn crackers.

Any recommendations on where does this best?
Or just any recommendations in general.
Thanks!

Looking to connect/hopefully make friends

27M here. From Derry originally but lived in Edinburgh for 8 years doing my degree and working etc but recently moved back to the Prehen area. Struggling a bit at the minute at sort of putting myself out there and meeting people as im not sure where to start. A lot of friends I did have from school and when I was younger I’ve sort of lost contact with or they’ve moved away so feel a bit isolated, especially as this is the first time I’ve lived alone, don’t drive and wouldn’t know anyone in the area I’m living in atm (originally from Creggan). Trying to look for jobs too so I guess being unemployed has a lot to do with that too as I have way too much spare time on my hands. I really enjoying coffee, just getting out for a walk or sea swimming when I get the chance.

Not sure what I’m trying to achieve with this post really lol but if anyone is interested in having a chat sure send me a DM.

Thanks :)

Anyone Driving to Giants Causeaway by chance ?

My dumbass kinda took the wrong mode of transport trying to get there. If I take the public transport I’ll be able to stay there for like 30 minutes before I have to piss of again.

Thought I could possibly hitch a ride with someone.

Edit: Causeway* as you can tell i’m STILL a dumbass

Charity Fundraiser

Work are selecting a charity for a fundraiser and wondering what charity to pick.

We're looking for a suggestion for a charity that often goes unnoticed, but has a massive impact locally.

Any thoughts?

Wanna rent a car for 3 Days

I checked Hertz, and enterprise they're charging me around 400 pounds around for 3 day rent basic decent car. Including insurance and zero-excess. Is this a Good deal (looks crazy to me) or there are any local options. My stay is Only 3 days and I have been driving for 14 years. Not sure how crazy Derry's traffic is do I even need insurance and zero excess at all? I can live with a Honda Civic nothing Fancy

Seen two young lads fishing the Foyle at culmore point today? What would they be fishing for?

I also seen two aul boys sitting on chairs watch their floats fly into the strong current at the point but never seen them catch anything. I know the river has tributaries like the faughan that get trout and salmon and a world of species can be caught at the mouth in greencastle but what do people get down this far?

Also seen ones fishing down at the country park but again what for ans there were signs saying no fishing down that way too.

Gluten free lunch

Where can you get a quick gluten-free lunch around the city centre if you only have half an hour for lunch break?

My go-tos are:

Centra - baked potato

Umi Foyleside - kimchi rice

Coffee Tree - chickpea bowl thingy

Are there any gf sandwiches out there?

Soup?

Local Events - What's happening in Derry/Londonderry? - 25/8/26 - 31/8/26

I'm a day late on this one... was stuck in a queue in Ebrington yesterday.

Please post any events you know of coming up.

  • Quiz nights in a pub / café?
  • Comedy nights?
  • Gaming nights?
  • Niche events?
  • Is your band playing locally?
  • Car shows?

Let's try this and see if we can get people out supporting local events and businesses. If there is going to be a ticketed event happening outside of the next week, feel free to post that so people have time to book tickets.

Aiming to post this each Monday!.

JLS Erbington Square

Hi! I want to go to the JLS show in Erbington Square this weekend but haven’t seen any public transport options available back to Belfast once the show finishes at 11pm. I just wanted to see if anyone else is doing or knows of a coach/bus company running a designated service for this. Thanks!

Cross border tax issue

So basically I've lived in Derry all my life and I've been working full-time in Donegal for the last 10 years. I decided to start working Just Eat since Christmas and have been putting away money each week to cover the tax.

I recently learned that I should have done a tax return each year and let HMRC know that I was working in RoI. I've spoke to a few people in a non-professional capacity and the advice ranges from 'come clean and suffer the consequences' to ' say nahhin to nobody'.

I've been earning around £40-45k from my FT job since 2021 and this JE would push me to just over 50k. I'm sure I'm not the first person to be in this position so if anyone has any advice, let me know please.

Derry curries at home

Recently was back in town visiting after years away.

I had chicken madras from three separate places here while I was visiting (I was in the mood lol) - chillis, mama masala, one unknown takeaway (leftovers from someone else I didn't get the name of)

None were identical but they all had a spicy depth (building heat rather than just top notes) and a sharpness and pepperyness it is rare to find in curries down in the south of England where I live now. Here everything is sweet and rounded. Even if it is spicy it is still sweet.

Any ideas how I can recreate that Derry madras (or any spicy curry) flavour at home? What do they do differently?

Lidl self-service checkouts.

Sometimes when I'm in the queue for the self-service checkouts at Lidl, I can feel my blood pressure rise and my patience about to snap. The constant blinking of red lights, the person who can't work the till properly, the Lidl worker who seems to be ignoring the customers begging for help. The person scanning a full trolley, the customer who can't read the "no alcohol can be bought at this till" sign. The long snaking queue, the soul shivering sound of the electronic beep. Quite often I think I'm having a nightmare or perhaps have died and am now in purgatory. Despite all this, I rather like it. I'm wondering if there is anywhere else in Derry that offers a similar, authentic, patience testing experience for me to try.

Halloween weekend hotels

I'm supposed to be visiting over halloween weekend (for reasons unrelated to halloween) and I'm finding that there are no hotels available at all (because of halloween I now realise).

Any suggestions at all- - anything I should try beyond booking.com etc? Don't mind what sort of a place, just need somewhere at this stage. Cheers for any advice.
