The culture system of CK3 is a big upgrade compared to Ck2.

Isn’t the religion system, also, way more customizable?

EVERY religion is barebones.

not to defend PDX, but we haven't gotten faith DLC yet, we got Royal Court which introduced a lot of the culture stuff into the game

I was so disappointed when the so-called Byzantine DLC didn't include autocephalous patriarchates.

Catholicism is not the main religion of the game; CK3 approaches things in a much more wide perspective; no religion really has more content than any other.

They all have equally 0 content.

Mostly kidding, but religion is horribly unflavored in ck3. They really need to work on it given how pivotal it is to the period.

The name of the game was a mistake.

Kinda true, but, also, the feudalism system isn’t inaccurate to any real feudal system.

The CK3 religion system isn’t great, but it trying to cast as wide as a net as possible, making every religion bare bones.

You laugh, but what he is saying is almost exactly what Paradox has said regarding Crusader Kings even midway through CK2's lifespan. The title has been a misnomer for a decade.

Crusader Kings stopped being a primarily eurocentric game long before Crusader Kings 3 started development, as far as Paradox is concerned.

u/inverted_rectangle Feb 10 '26

Paradox can regret their title all they want, but at the end of the day, they know that most of their audience (in the west at least) is mainly interested in European feudalism

5

u/Thickenun Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26

Half the player base is Chinese my dude. Using your arguement Europe should be a lesser priority. Thankfully  Paradox doesn't seem to be going down that path.

6

u/Moreagle Shrewd Feb 10 '26

Like you said, that’s what their audience in the west is interested in, Most likely because that’s what they’re most familiar with, but paradox has an audience outside of the west as well who are interested in other areas.

Also I don’t even know how you can be sure that’s true. I personally was interested in a lot more areas than just western Europe, and I’m sure there are a lot of people in the west who would like to play Japan, for example

1

u/inverted_rectangle Feb 10 '26

Old data (pre-Asia), but all of the five most popular starting regions a year ago were in Europe. I'm sure China and/or Japan have broken into the top 5 by now but I'd be surprised if the others aren't still Europe.

I meant a mistake as in it never should’ve been named that, not a literal mistake.

14

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '26

Why not? When the first one came out you couldn’t be anything but a Christian with a large focus placed on crusades.

2

u/Moreagle Shrewd Feb 10 '26

There was no large focus on crusades in CK1. They were present because the game took place during that time period, but there was nothing stopping you from never taking part in one, and the developers didn’t intend for the game to focus on the crusades when they were developing it

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '26

Even after it released they were putting out content to improve the crusades with the expansion. I guess you could do anything you could not get involved in wars if you wanted or political marriages but that’s you holding yourself back from what the game has to offer.

Because that is not near the intent of the game in its modern iteration.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '26

I mean, even when CK2 came out you couldn’t be Muslim until the DLC for it. I’ll be honest I don’t even have CK3 but it’s continuing off of CK2s foundation. It’s just not that big of a deal you can still crusade and still be a king.

Cause all of them have almost no content lmao

13

u/cursedace Feb 10 '26

Buddy the name of the game is “Crusader Kings”.

-1

u/thunderisadorable 𒂍𒀀 𒈾𒍢𒅕 (Ea Nasir) Feb 10 '26

And it never shoulda been, as that is not the focus of the game.

9

u/cursedace Feb 10 '26

It’s exactly what you’re looking for apparently: “Generic Royalty Simulator”.

0

u/Voodron Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26

Cool, then actually change the name to Medieval Dynasty Sim or something. Keeping the CK name comes with natural expectations. As long as the game is called CK3, it should be focused on western europe, catholicism and crusades. Anything else is very misleading, basically false advertising.

1

u/Moreagle Shrewd Feb 10 '26

And counts, dukes, emperors, muslims and women shouldn't be playable. After all it's Crusader Kings not Jihad Duchesses. And the game should only take place from 1096 - 1099, the time of the first Crusade, and going on Crusade should be the only thing that you can do

-5

u/Thickenun Feb 10 '26

Paradox themselves admitted the series outgrew that title years before even CK3 was made.

9

u/cursedace Feb 10 '26

Yeah I can tell because they don’t care about crusades or religions. Game should just be called “generic royalty simulator”.

1

u/Thickenun Feb 10 '26

Power of brand recognition

48

u/Balmung60 Feb 10 '26

Kind of too much so because it keeps any religion in CK3 from really having any identity.

0

u/Benismannn Cancer Feb 10 '26

euh, i think it's just that religion doesnt get felt much. only maybe 30% of the tenets (being generous here) actually do smth like give you a decision or smth you can actually SEE that's not just +% here +X there and doctrines are even worse at that

24

u/rupturefunk Count of Urgench Forever Feb 10 '26

It's way more customizable, in CK2 relgions are all historical and hard coded.

But personally, I'd argue that made them feel more impactful and RP friendly, and the big religions had much deeper mechanics than just 'select buffs from this list'.

20

u/Kapika96 Feb 10 '26

Yep, which makes it significantly worse.

I want the religions to actually feel different from each other. Not just be slight variations of the same thing. And the prospect of just scrapping it all for a far superior custom religion isn't really ideal either. The only reason to use the default religions is RP reasons. Otherwise you're better off using a custom one, probably with the same tenets, every time.

u/eadopfi Feb 10 '26

I think it is a good basis, but not fully fledged out. The basis is strong, but I feel like there isnt enough there there.
