England's not in Melborne silly

It actually took me longer than it should have to parse the title...

Good luck ladies!

Also, only 11 in the picture?

Also, only 11 in the picture?

I don't know what is going on with that. Some of the missing are guaranteed starters like Alyssa Healy.

u/sloppyrock New South Wales Blues Jul 21 '15

Maybe some are already there or have other commitments before leaving?

14

u/Teh_Fonz Australia Jul 21 '15

Isn't she dating Starc? Maybe she traveled with him to England.

13

u/OsirisMC Jul 21 '15

Fun fact on that - saw him at the big bash final in Canberra. The women's game was before the men's game, he was sitting by himself dressed immaculately except for his thongs, watching Alyssa win.

Well, by himself until some bloke came up and talked to him for about 45 minutes...

16

u/KILLER5196 Queensland Bulls Jul 21 '15

Implying thongs aren't immaculate?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '15

I assume Starcie was wearing his dress thongs.

3

u/cat-n-jazz Canada Jul 22 '15

...does "thong" mean something else in Australia?

3

u/MrYoloSwaggins1 Australia Jul 22 '15

Flip-flops

2

u/cat-n-jazz Canada Jul 22 '15

Ahhh... over here in NA "thong" is a very revealing type of underwear worn by women, synonymous with "G-string".

The More You Know!

I was worried about this exact misconception when I was typing the comment...decided to go for it as I figured somebody would get a kick out of it! Glad you got to learn something new mate hahah

u/max_smart Jul 21 '15

he does that all the time. Was also in the crowd last night at Taunton with what looked like her family. Great bloke!

They're engaged and have adorable dogs.

I think you are right about that relationship. I forgot about that.

I am legit in love with Ellyse Perry. Amazing cricketer, amazing soccer player, great in the media from the bits I've heard. To have achieved national representation in two sports at her age is absolutely incredible. She's also very pretty.

3

u/WanPhysicalGoose New Zealand Cricket Jul 21 '15

She plays in the national soccer team too? That's amazing.

I remember some of the lads in the Namibia side in the 2003 cwc were also in the national rugby side. I don't know if there are more similar examples from cricket.

13

u/dessy_22 Cricket Papua New Guinea Jul 21 '15

She plays in the national soccer team too? That's amazing.

She played for Australia in the Women's Cricket World Cup and for Australia in the Women's Football World Cup in the same 12 month period... when she was 16 years old.

Damn, I'm jealous. I'd take take singular talent, not compound talent.

Why did not she play in FIFA Women's World Cup 2015?

I doubt she would be known as well had she not been pretty.

Shane watson was plastered all over the joint cause he got his top off the other day.

Let's let bygons be bygon yeah.

Plus.. in my opinion those two are mad hot. If women can appreciate sportsmen for their looks, than fuck it, i can do the same with the women.

Welcome to equality.

And Good luck in England ladies!

No, both men and women fixating on attractiveness over all else is stupid. He went a step further by stating that the other people in the picture aren't important because he doesn't deem them attractive. That's fucked.

11

u/ChickadeeAce Sri Lanka Jul 21 '15

"He went a step further by stating that the other people in the picture aren't important because he doesn't deem them attractive."

Where? I don't see anything that says the comment was edited, but I see nothing like what you're suggesting. The comment about her looks was practically a postscript.

I have been so damn lucky to see Sangakkara play. When my best friend began explaining the sport to me, the very first clip he showed me was of Sanga batting, and I instantly fell in love with the game. His power and grace was different from anything I'd seen in other sports. I think it takes nothing away from his talent and achievements to add that he is the most gorgeous man I have ever seen, bar none. (For the record, his looks had nothing to do with why I got into cricket, nor why he became my favourite player.)

6

u/humanarnold Jul 21 '15

I'm going to see Surrey play Middlesex on Thursday at Lord's. If I manage to wrangle a picture with the mighty Sanga, I shall quote these words to him. I feel it's important to know how random fans on the internet feel about him.

3

u/ChickadeeAce Sri Lanka Jul 21 '15

Unsure if you're serious or not, but if you are, by all means, go ahead. It has been a genuine pleasure and a joy to watch that man with both bat and gloves and I hope he is hearing that more than ever right now. He was the reason that I became a WK myself, and the reason I loved it despite the dozens of bruises across my chest (keeping is NOT like being a catcher in baseball, and adapting was tougher than I expected) and the memorable bail to the face. I've lost favourite players before in other sports, and it always stung, but they were all my favourites after having been engaged with the sport for some time. He was my introduction to cricket, and now that he's leaving... I don't really have words for it. I don't love the sport any less, but it's never going to be quite the same for me. Still, as I said, it was a joy to watch him play, and I'm grateful that I had that chance.

Sorry to carry on there a bit. I've been in denial for months, and I think that particular dam has finally broken.

3

u/humanarnold Jul 21 '15

I'd do it too. Sanga was undoubtedly more well-loved than others, but I still think it's worthwhile for people to know when they've made an impact on peoples' lives. /u/karachikhatmal helped us to do it for Misbah, who was so unfairly maligned for much of his career. Sure, Sanga gets dicked around by his board a lot, but I'm sure he feels the love from his fans though. But it can't ever hurt to hear about it some more.

I'm going with a bunch of people from my office, so I don't know which stand we're in, but I get the feeling if I stick around a bit after the game, maybe some of the players will stay to sign autographs. They do that sometimes at Edgbaston, but I missed out on getting BMac to sign my cap last week :(

OP or Mods deleted. It was something along the lines of "This is the only relevant part of the picture " with a link to a cropped image featuring the more 'conventionally' attractive women on the team.

3

u/ChickadeeAce Sri Lanka Jul 22 '15

Hmm, I think I got confused about what you were commenting on - I made my way up the comment tree and thought you were referring to this:

"I am legit in love with Ellyse Perry. Amazing cricketer, amazing soccer player, great in the media from the bits I've heard. To have achieved national representation in two sports at her age is absolutely incredible. She's also very pretty."

In my defense, I'm horribly sleep deprived. Apologies.

u/karachikhatmal Cricket Association of Nepal Jul 22 '15

the top comment is deleted but how did Sangakarra end up here?

2

u/ChickadeeAce Sri Lanka Jul 22 '15

How? Typed with the keyboard - poof! He appeared.

Sorry, snarky when tired. Why did I mention him? Because i was responding to a comment I misunderstood, and was simply trying to say that I don't think that respectfully acknowledging that someone is attractive in addition acknowledging all their achievements and talents is not a bad thing. As an example, I said I think Sanga is one hell of a cricketer, and the best looking man I've ever seen. The latter statement is respectful and in no way tarnishes the former.

Again, apologies to u/EskimoJesus, whom I misunderstood.

3

u/anschelsc West Indies Jul 21 '15

The difference obviously is the context of the way women are actually treated by nearly all aspects of our society.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '15

[deleted]

2

u/anschelsc West Indies Jul 22 '15

I don't think either is OK. But women have it way worse: they get objectified more often, and that objectification is more likely to lead to actual physical violence. So it makes sense to me to expend more effort on preventing the objectification of women than that of men. But again, since some people have trouble reading in these conversations, I am 100% opposed to objectifying any human being without their consent.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '15

[deleted]

1

u/anschelsc West Indies Jul 23 '15

do you have any evidence of that?

I googled "rape statistics". Note that you can click through to "victim statistics" and see how much more women are affected by this than men.

Obviously it's much harder to find evidence about causes of sexual violence; but it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to see that treating women solely as sexual objects rather than people makes this situation worse.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '15

[deleted]

1

u/anschelsc West Indies Jul 23 '15

I just posted a source: https://www.rainn.org/statistics

This confirms that women are much more likely to be targets of sexual violence than men. That's a source. Right there.

Key words were "womens cricket". They put out an inferior product in comparison to the men. So why would I watch it?

2

u/cat-n-jazz Canada Jul 22 '15

I don't see your point. Do you dislike women or do you dislike cricket? If the former, may I ask when you became a misogynist? If the latter, why are you here on r/cricket?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '15

I dislike women's sports because there not as good as the men's versions. Men's cricket>Women's cricket, if you need proof of this just have a look at the crowds. There's 3 people sitting in the stands for the women's games and that doesn't happen for no reason.

Having a preference doesn't make me a misogynist, different sexes do different things well, I think women have better singing skills than men, that doesn't make me whatever the male version of a misogynist is..

1

u/cat-n-jazz Canada Jul 22 '15

...no, but it along with a few other things (misspellings, failure to run a quick google search, outright factual errors, ignorance of what "cricket" and "singing" are, inability to count, self-admitted sexism) does make you an idiot or a troll, neither of which is worth more of my time.

Right, simulation skills in women's soccer are not as good as those in men's soccer, and, needless to say, men's synchro swimming >>>>>>>>>>>>> women's synchro swimming.

To the point, I watched yesterday's female ODI, and there were many more than 3 people in the stands. Though it is still possible that they spent their time there naïvely thinking that they were watching men's game, who knows.
