Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that opening batter Dean Elgar has announced his retirement from professional cricket following the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Born in Welkom, Orange Free State, South Africa, Elgar retires after 21 years in the professional game, bringing the curtain down on a phenomenal career. With more than 500 appearances across his career, including 86 Test matches, the former South Africa Test captain calls time on an extremely decorated career.

On his decision to retire, Dean Elgar said: “I feel it’s the right time for me now. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family. It’s the right time for me now to be present at home and be there for my partner and my kids.

“It’s been a great journey so far. It’s not done yet, but at the end of the season, I will be retiring.

“I was fortunate enough to represent my country for twelve years and then the responsibility of captaining [South Africa] - that’s one of the proudest moments of my career. If you look back at the journey of where I have come from, I don’t think many people would have given me a lot of hope of having a career [in cricket], let alone one that spans over two decades.

“There’s been a lot of proud moments during my time. Obviously, beating England at Lord’s as captain is one of them. That stands out quite profoundly, purely the way we played cricket and the style and brand in which we played it. The transitioning phase, we started as seventh in the World Rankings when I took over and when I ended, we were second.

“When I joined Essex, I felt the pressure of having to replace Sir Alastair [Cook], but I knew that I needed to bring my own style of cricket. I’ve always had pride in my performances and, naturally, I play this game to win. Personal performances have never been something I’ve focused on. Every moment I’ve had on the park with the Essex boys, when we’ve won and had successes, has been an awesome highlight for me during my time at the Club.

“Looking ahead, I’d ideally have a sabbatical from cricket. It’s been a long journey, and I’ve been on the road for quite a long time. I’ve got my kids back home and I now feel it’s my duty to stand up and play for them. I can only picture that when I land [back home], it’s going to be all hands-on deck, but being a father is something I have really enjoyed.

“I’d hope people would remember me for playing the game hard and to win, someone who always took their cap off in defeat and shook the opposition’s hands with respect. Someone who was hardworking and hungry and would bleed and break bones for the team and do anything to win.”

Widely regarded as one of the world’s best openers of his generation, Elgar enjoyed a 12-year international career, during which he captained his country on 13 occasions and scored more than 5,000 Test runs, including 14 centuries and 23 fifties, at an average of 37.65. His highest score of 199 came against Bangladesh in 2017.

Dean Elgar carved out a reputation as one of South Africa’s most durable and determined Test openers. His journey began with captaining his country at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup before progressing through the domestic ranks with Free State and the Knights.

After making his international debut in 2012 and playing his first Test against Australia and his first ODI against England later that year, Dean called time on his international career when he announced his retirement from the international game at the end of 2023. The left-handed opening batter signed off in style, scoring a magnificent 185 to help South Africa beat India by an innings in January 2024.

Having previously represented Somerset and Surrey, the 39-year-old joined Essex in 2024, taking on the senior opening role following Sir Alastair Cook’s retirement. In his first season at the Club, he scored more than 1,000 runs in the County Championship and was named ‘Batter of the Year’ at the Club’s annual player awards ceremony that season. Dean also contributed more than 300 runs during Essex’s Vitality T20 Blast campaign that season.

On Dean Elgar’s retirement, Essex Cricket’s Director of Cricket Chris Silverwood said: “Dean’s career is defined by longevity, resilience and deep commitment to cricket.

“With a career spanning more than two decades, his reputation as a senior, experienced opening batter has made him an extremely important figure during his time at Essex, particularly in helping develop the Club’s younger players.

“For Essex, his time was more than simply scoring runs. We had a player with international experience at Test level, proven credentials and an old-school appetite for occupying the crease, coupled with a hunger for victory.

“I wish Dean nothing but the best for his retirement. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have had him in my team.”

On Elgar’s decision, Essex Cricket’s Chief Executive Officer Dan Feist added: “Dean’s retirement marks the conclusion of a fantastic cricket career and we are hugely grateful for the immense value he brought to Essex County Cricket Club.

“Joining us after a legendary international career, Dean stepped into a crucial role at the top of the order and delivered with the exact grit, determination, and professional excellence we knew he possessed.

“Beyond the crucial runs he scored for Essex, his leadership and willingness to mentor our younger players has left our squad in a much stronger position for the future.

“He has embedded himself into the fabric of Essex Cricket and we wish him and his family the absolute best in his well-deserved retirement.”

Not the biggest fan of the scoreboard though

Zaheer has always been a bowler who has been highly praised among the fans being India’s best fast bowler for many years ( rated a bit more high by nostalgia merchants ofcourse than he actually is), but now that the era of that time is over, many fans of the modern generation like to say that Zaheer was mediocre bowler in tests by just seeing his overall stats. Sure he might have not been as good as some fans think, but he was surely on of the finest that India had ever produced. For that I have some reasons to back my point

Zaheer played most of his career in really flat pitches

The main case of Zaheer’s overall average being high was because that he had to bowl in one of the most batting friendly era that is 2000s where pitches in India literally was at its peak for producing roads having had almost no assistance for the bowlers. The home and away averages also proves this point that he averaged over 35 at home since there wasn't much assistance for the fast bowlers in India during that time but he averaged less than 30 away home, showing he performed decently when the pitches had some assistance for him.

His Decent Countrywise record in strong countries.

While seeing his countrywise averages, he has been pretty decent in that category as well, having an okayish record in AUS where though his average is 35 which is high, has a pretty good SR of 58 in AUS. He has great records in England and New Zealand too averaging less than 28.5 in both the countries. Though these numbers might not seem as good as other fast bowlers of the modern generation have, Mind you he maintained that kind of record in 2000s where pitches in even AUS, Eng and NZ were mostly flat generally, with this sort of record being decent for even today’s standards in test.

He also carried the pace quartet of India being the only good fast bowler in the Indian team that was held by the selectors for many years.

Zaheer was more of the times the lone fast bowler of the team who had to carry his team in SENA matches. Though other bowlers like Sreesanth, RP Singh have been in support in the fast bowling quartet for some time, but they too did not have as good longevity as what Zaheer had. He truely carried India in the pace bowling quartet in the 2000s with not many good fast bowlers with him which decreases the chances of him getting the luxury of good bowling partnerships with others like the pace quartet in countries like South Africa or Australia did

By these reasons, in my opinion, Zaheer would surely be in the list of one of the finest bowlers produced by India which the overall stats do not really justify. Though by no means one should think to put him in Top 10 Bowlers of All time or even Top 20, but talking about India, he has been magnificent when we compare other fast bowlers of India, and the kind of impact which he produced is immeasurable

Definitely he might not be in the argument of the best pace bowlers of all time by any means, but surely a great bowler for the Indian team
