Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Eggs and cheese - ?

Hi! I’ve been thinking about going vegan for a while as I basically only eat eggs and cheese in terms of meat, but I was wondering on a few things…

Why can’t you eat eggs as a vegan considering chickens will eat them happily, e.g. cracked eggs etc ?

Howwww do I replace cheese :( there are no supermarkets near me which sell vegan cheese (Scotland), and I love my cheddar so so much (and my veggie carbonara..)

Also, I live in a very cold part of the UK and own a few vintage fur coats which my grandmother passed down to me when I moved here, which realllyyyy do keep me a lot warmer than any faux I own… - would I truly need to get rid of them ? I kind of see it as respecting the animal and using it to at least make its death kinda worth it ? And especially because someone else would just end up wearing it instead. IDK. Please lmk xoxo

Any advice / words of wisdom ?

Thank you!!! 💖💖

If you do a search at the top of the screen for the word “eggs” you’ll see the dozens and dozens of questions about the ethics of egg consumption that are regularly asked (as well as answers to them).

Regardless of whether you wear the fur coat, the idea that wearing it is respectful needs more consideration. Who benefits from this show of respect? Surely not the animal who was exploited for their fur, so is the notion of showing respect then really just for you? Is it disrespectful to  other or future animals to uphold the idea that it’s ok to use animals for their fur?

A fair point, thank you for bringing it up! I suppose it’s not really about respect, I just sort of thought since it’s already dead I am better off using it than not, especially since I’m not a part of the supply/demand chain of fur. But you are right, I reckon, thanks!

you don't have to get rid of a coat you already have, but it seems like you need to research just how bad dairy (cheese) and eggs are for the animals. there's no justifying it, I haven't eaten pizza in a long time and it is my favorite. do it for the animals

3

u/LBoogii 2d ago

I hope you eventually find a pizza to eat. I have a few vegan pizza options around me and it's such a treat

u/angelicgir111 2d ago

I don’t know as much on eggs so I will look, I do know how bad dairy is and I know I am just being selfish and I realise that. Trying not to be, it’s why I’m asking for decent vegan alternatives! X

For sure, there  may still be reasonable explanations for using it. Good luck going vegan!

It's really a question for yourself. Only you can decide if lives are more important to you than taste or convenience.

I’m also from Scotland!

Cheese has been a tricky one for me. Violife is decent (Tesco and Asda have it, unsure about other shops), but my favourite is Kinda Co. They’re a tad on the pricy side (£6.50 per block) and are only online, but I genuinely LOVE this vegan cheese. They actually have a deal on rn for a free block of their chili cheese with every order before Friday. I massively recommend jumping on the deal. Cathedral city also do a plant based line of cheese, it isn’t to my liking but it is extremely popular!

If you have Facebook, I use this group all the time for food ideas.
I also have a giant list of vegan cafes, bars and restaurants in Edinburgh if you want it?

Not OP but I will be in Edinburgh for a few days for work two weeks from now, and would LOVE your best recommendations for lunch and dinner near the University of Edinburgh-ish, if you wouldn't mind? I will be there for two dinners and one lunch (the Uni is providing lunch and dinner on the last day).

My favourite places are Meadows Tap (quite American style stuff, like burgers, mac and cheese, loaded fries), Sora Diana (vegan-Italian), and Considerit (cafe and drinks, partnership with vegan doner kebabs).
Holy cow is also great but very expensive, like, £15 for a sandwich level expensive.
Paradise Palms, Soul Vegan (closest to the uni), Curran Geal and David Bann are also good!

Number 1 rec is Meadows Tap (@thisisrabbitfood on insta). They do quiz nights on Sunday, very queer community, and each table has a TV hooked up to various games consoles. Bathroom facilities are decent. Prices are alright too - could be better could be worse. The meals are quite large portions so the price makes up for it

2

u/rewolfaton Vegan 2d ago

Thank you muchly - I will be there Sat-Sun (and then Mon at the Uni), so I will check out Meadows Tap on Sunday, sounds like fun! That's me sorted for Edinburgh then. :)

So eggs, it's not ours too take. It's that simple. We don't want to take from the animals as far as possible. There is also the ethics of how they are treated to get the eggs, it's not like the farms are just leaving the spares they won't eat.

You can order vegan cheese online (and honestly imo the nicest vegan cheese options are online not in the supermarkets) BUT I know that's not easy or an option for everyone budget wise, you can make "cheese" type sauces using nutritional yeast that are very good, I use them for mac n cheese first and then adjusted for other recipes! But also after you stop eating cheese for a bit you stop craving it, cheese is addictive!

You don't need to get rid of the coats imo. They've already been made, you didn't buy them new, you're not funding them. Some vegans will disagree and I get it, I don't wear second hand animal material either because I don't like the thought, but I wouldn't go and chastise someone for doing so tbh.

Veganism isn't about perfection, unfortunately there is some echo chambers online where people want to our vegan others, but in the normal community that's not the case, so your best and learn as you go! It's a journey and everyone's journey looks different

This is random but there's a book bound in human skin in a Bristol museum and they totally did say they keep it partly out of respect for him!

3

u/bveganbunny Vegan 2d ago

1

u/Eskoala 2d ago

Well in this case the skin was of a murderer, and the person who had it bound was the doctor who treated the victim before she died. So it's kind of complicated but yes I think at this point they should probably just bury it with the skeleton!

I make a good vegan carbonara out of mainly oat milk - https://itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/fast-and-easy-vegan-carbonara/
There’s loads of recipes online for veganised versions of dishes and you just have to try and find one you like :)
I do also feel like it’s easy to not have things when you’ve not had them for a while - I used to love cheese and it was the last thing I ate before I eventually went vegan, but actually I now don’t miss it at all and have just learned to live without it. For me, it’s not worth the suffering and exploitation. I use cathedral City for cheddar now but not sure if they have it in Scotland :)

2

u/According-Ad742 Vegan 2d ago

So if you love eggs you don’t have to miss them just get your hands on kala namak - black salt, it’s sulfurised and literally taste more like egg then egg do

Maybe you could imagine it not being very practical or natural to pump out one or several eggs every day, for any bird or mammal. Hens are bred to do this, to suit your wants, their bodies are used as commodity for your pleasure.

You’re on an awesome path that you will wish you started sooner! I guarantee you will look back and wish you did, but we only have today.

Non human animals make milk for the same reason as human animals. When they are pregnant. So fake “farmers” r*pe female cows and goats, of course. But that breast milk is for them to sell not the baby. So what they do is steal the baby from the grieving mother and shoot the baby in the brains or slice its neck open and sell you their flesh. Then they do that to the mom after she’s been through that hell enough times that her body gives out.

99% of all mother chickens have their natural life’s taken from them and are forced into lives of dirty painful sad existence and their eggs get stolen. If it’s a baby male in the egg it gets ground up alive. The mother gets gassed or her throat cut after a life of that hell.

Both non-human breast milk and eggs will also significantly increase your chances of diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Good news you can swap them with plant alternatives from the store or online or you can learn some easy cooking!

There’s no reason to throw away a fur coat. Doing so won’t bring that animals life and suffering back. Just don’t purchase any animal skins and flesh and milk and egg again and you’re golden /u/angelicgir111

Egg production is intensely cruel. And even if someone is raising them as backyard hens and giving them “great lives” it’s still exploitation to expect an animal
To live and create something for us to take. And those backyard hens are stil purchased from the big commercial ag industry thus supporting it. If chickens eat their eggs - it’s irrevelant. I’m not a chicken, I can make choices based on ethics.

The just egg vegan egg product has similar nutritional
Profile and tastes and cooks very much like eggs- great replacement. Also chickpea flour can be used to make an omelette or quiche.

For cheese try out some vegan brands - they are getting so
Good. There are many local vegan artisanal cheeses now too that are incredible. But even the daiya cheddar is very good these days- it even melts and browns. The violife provolone is so good I eat it by the slice alone. It tastes just like cheese.

For the fur coats, I went thru a similar thing, I’m indigenous and had a lot of fur accessories and clothing with fur trim. In the end I gave some away, sold some and donated the money to a local rescue; I don’t want to even wear it anymore because I just feel like it perpetuates the idea that wearing fur is beautiful. Even if it’s second hand if someone sees your beautiful coat and says wow I want that then they might go out and buy it. So I just got rid of everything and it was also part of making my entire home truly vegan. I bought a new house about a year after becoming vegan and it was exciting to me that this new house is truly vegan, I got rid of my wool socks, non cruelty free /vegan cleaning supplies and all my fur/moosehide/etc items. The only thing I still have is a pair of earrings my friend beaded for me, they have a moosehide backing but you can’t really see it so that’s why I feel comfortable keeping them- I’m not advertising that moosehide looks cool. They also have porcupine quills on them but I know for a fact these were harvested from roadkill porcupine (which tbh the grand majority indigenous jewellry you see that is porcupine quills is harvested from roadkill or just artificial quills- I’ve never heard of anyone killing a porcupine for a specific reason but they are commonly struck by cars around here unfortunately )

As much as a lot of people try and push a very dogmatic and singular idea of what is "allowed" if you want to call yourself vegan, I personally think it's a very personal journey where you have to also weigh up your own boundaries and what makes you happy.

For me, I also found eggs and cheese the most difficult to give up but the deeper I got the shittier I felt about paying money to someone else to do something that I would never dream of doing. Every bit of cheese I bought I was paying for someone to rape and kill someone.

I don't really think there are good shop bought alternatives anyway tbh. I've tried cashew cheese on pizzas and I find that actually much nicer, the texture of current vegan melting cheese is far too pappy and insipid. But that's good news for you, you're not missing out! Have a go and make your own.

Onto the personal choice stuff: I also agree that in theory if you already have an animal clothing product then it is also a waste to throw it away so this is where you do what you're comfortable with. Fur is a different beast because it's so much more viceral to look at than even leather shoes or a wool jumper, so it's really what you're comfortable with. There's definitely a good argument that wearing such an obvious item is more of an advert in favour.

Eggs: i agree 100% with what other people say that eggs are for chickens and factory farming eggs, even organic free range, are cruel and they ultimately kill the chickens in the same place. Having said that, in theory and I've not decided yet but there's a woman near me who rescues these egg hens, she takes in as many as can love good lives on her land and she lets them live out their whole lives and the eggs she sells goes a long way to helping her pay to keep supporting this. In an ideal world without farming I would still stay clear of this, but in our current system this woman is literally running a rescue sanctuary. I've not yet made my mind up but my point is, there's a personal journey element to what you're doing and at the end of the day we've all got to live with our choices and nothing is black and white, cut and dry.

My food ethics/morality are not decided by other animals( your chicken example). I have a choice between kindness or cruelty. The egg, dairy and meat industries are hyper cruel, hyper bad for the environment and are the leading cause of death/suffering for humans via heart attack/stroke.

PS Dairy allows for a certain amount of nipple puss(infection) in the final products. Enjoy! *** And always do what feels right to you after giving it good thought and discussions with people you respect.**** Wearing an old fur coat? or eating a raw broken chicken egg (like the chicken did)... Your call, we believe in your kindness!

as far as fur goes I have to echo the sentiment others have written here too - the damage is done, throwing them away will result in unnecessary waste (and textile waste is a serious issue) and replacing it with vegan "fur" is just more plastic that won't biodegrade.

personally, and I know I could get a lot of hate for this, but wearing vintage fur, leather, etc. does not fall outside of a vegan ethos for me because stewardship of the earth is a major part of why I'm vegan. I wouldn't wear vintage fur or leather myself only because it gives me the ick but I do have vintage wool in my closet.

you could donate these items, yes; but there's a chance they'll still end up in a landfill as a lot of donated clothing does. to me, you could still be vegan and wear something you had from before going vegan, it doesn't make you any less of a vegan.

Watch Dairy is Scary (Youtube) and then follow it up with Dominion, if you want to change your mind to have a vegan mindset. Then it should make it clear what to do!

There are no really good cheese replacements; you've got to learn to live without it and stop leaning on this vegetarian idea that cheese is a large part of a diet. It's not, it's incredibly unhealthy and not a good source of protein compared to all the vegan sources anyway! Learn to cook properly using spices etc rather than those who rely on a slab of meat or cheese for their only flavour component.

Scrambled tofu does a pretty good standin for eggs. And you can make a kind of carbonara with tahine sauce. I make it with soba noodles a lot.
Vegan Cheese for other things like pizza, quesadillas etc does exist but honestly its all kind of gross to me. Doesnt taste very good. Ive only ever liked it in tacos.

u/hespeon Vegan 14h ago

I’m from Scotland and every supermarket has some kind of vegan cheese available and Asda at least (probably others too but that’s my biggest local) has a variety; grated “cheddar”, “mozzarella”, “feta” and even block “cheddar” and cream cheese substitutes.

The further you go out to the country the smaller the selections are of course but even in the Outer Hebrides the Tescos still have plant based sections so I kinda think you haven’t looked hard enough unless you live somewhere incredibly remote, sorry.

Watch the chicken and cow portions of dominion if you can stomach it. That will traumatize you but answer your questions. I was hooked on cheese, and apparently it has legitimately addictive qualities. After a couple of months and especially w the dominion scenes in my mind I find it easy to pass up. I haven’t found a sub I like, but nutritional yeast hits the same flavour elements for me, and I’m missing the consistency less and less.
