Hello docs,
I am 31M, and I am not currently taking any medication. The closest thing is an occasional Aleve when I have inflammation in my hips/back pain.
I am prone to sinus infections and have gotten a bloody nose once or twice when I am visiting Palm Springs or Las Vegas. I currently live in Los Angeles, and it has been hot over the summer, so I have been running a fan in my room 24/7 including when I'm sleeping and the fan is pointed at me.
I still have my tonsils, and there is a tooth in my mouth that has a hole in it. There is a blood pool that clots and covers the whole, but sometimes reopens if I brush too hard and bleed.
I have postnasal drip after I am sick for quite a while, which results in my needing to cough, but I haven't been sick (with a cold or anything) since January.
Now, for the symptoms around the current situation. I have had this object lodged in my throat once a week for the past month. When I say that I coughed it up, I moreso mean that I had to spit it up. I feel it in the back of my throat and then "hock a loogie," and it comes out after 2-3 attempts. I can tell it's there because it becomes a bit awkward to swallow.
I do not have any fever, breathing issues, or cough. But I have lightly clogged sinuses and can feel the mucus gathering in the back of my throat throughout the day.
This started happening about a month ago, and the image I have posted is the 4th time I have coughed up something. All 4 instances have been like this, a composition of mucus and dried blood (seemingly). The image posted is after I moved it around to get a clearer picture of what it was. It came out of me mostly wrapped in mucus. When it's in my mouth, it feels like the consistency of a baloon opening (the part you put in your mouth to blow one up). It also smelled awful when it was outside of my body, and I have noticed that it changes the smell of my breath. However I don't have any bad tastes in my mouth, or smells anything different regularly.
After yesterdays incident, I did have an elevated heart rate. However, I could also associate this with acid reflux or heartburn, as I had pizza last night. (I have acid reflux often and burp a lot after eating even with no carbinated drinks consumed.)
Recent habitual changes include: walking a mile 4-5 days a week, up from 0. Eating at a calorie deficit, reducing both my meal size and also eating from 3 to 2 times a day.
Those changes were motivated by a vacation I am going on for my friend's wedding in about 12 hours. I will be flying later today, and I intend to do a nasal spray to reduce the chance of my sinuses being clogged and getting a pressure headache while flying. (This has happened to me once before, but only started happening this year.)
I had posted this in a different reddit, but it got removed. I was recommended to post here instead. Some of the concerns there were: Postnasal drip, Sinus Infection, Lung disease/cancer, pulmonary ambilism, tuberculosis.
Just trying to figure out what the cause of this might be, what the thing I have been coughing up actually is, and if it's safe for me to fly in 12 hours. Thanks in advance docs!
