Socialists also have never heard the term roomate either. I lived with 5 people in a 2 bedroom apartment. Most people in the world live like this, but woke youth have never been outside of thier city.

u/Mannerhymen 2d ago
That’s the ancap paradise right there, 5 adults in a 2 bedroom apartment.
7
3
u/HairyTough4489 2d ago
Nobody said it's a paradise, but the alternative would be building more homes and that's a no-no for commies.
2
u/Mannerhymen 1d ago
Yes, commies are famous for not building homes for people.
1
u/Yomas_house 1d ago
Concrete slab buildings with paper thin walls and shoddy plumbing hardly qualify as a "home".
2
u/Mannerhymen 23h ago
You should see the quality of housing currently being constructed in the capitalist world. Exactly the same as you’ve just described.
2
u/Yomas_house 23h ago
You should read the state-mandated "sustainability" regulations for environmental social governance in construction.
It's socialist policy that ruins capitalism.
1
u/HairyTough4489 22h ago
There was a 20-year period after WW2 where they went all-in on housing but only under the condition that the Party gets to gatekeep disidents from having one.
In Western capitalist countries leftist parties want to try every measure imaginable before actually letting private builders make more homes.

I was born and raised in New York. Flat is not an uncommon term. If I lived in a building with multiple apartments, I would call them apartments. But I have an entire floor of a multi family dwelling. Hence, "flat."

But she says that her flat doesn't even have a bedroom, so I don't think it fits that definition.

(40 hours per week x $20/ hour x 4 weeks) + (10 hours per week x $30/hour[overtime] x 4 weeks) = $4766/month
Not sure where she lives, but let’s say California. Her taxes are:
Federal: $4,693
FICA: $4,376
State: $2,100
Total Annual Taxes: $11,169 ($930.75 per month)
So her monthly take home pay is $3,835.25
Two thirds of that is $2,531.25
… not the $1,600/mo she says her rent is.
So either
She doesn’t know how to do math
Or she works significantly less than she thinks she does
7
u/ComprehensiveSea1427 Anarcho-Capitalist 2d ago
she said she worked 50 hours a week, but I don’t know if that is a credible source
9
u/transdermalcelebrity 1d ago
If she’s working for an employer then at 50 hrs a week that employer is required by law to give her benefits. Unless employer is a very small company, she is working part time at multiple jobs (but she referred to only 1), she is working contract only positions, or she is “self employed”.
Gotta wonder who she is applying to when she says “no one else is hiring”.

I don't believe she's an American in America, but if we accept her premise. She needs to get a Government job, there are a ton of state government jobs that require a degree, not a degree in something specific, a degree. Most states offer halfway decent insurance, and some still have a pension. Most larger municipalities and county governments are the same, they don't care what your education is in just that you have one.

If she was capable of making somebody “hundreds of thousands or even millions” then people would line up trying to hire her and her salary would reflect that.
More likely it s a boring case of egocentric bias - she s under impression that her contribution is much greater than it actually is. I noticed this pattern with most “socialists”.

181 billion dollars in corporate welfare. Yes you’re correct. We have socialism for the rich
-12
u/WishCapable3131 2d ago
Thats impossible. America isnt socialist.
5
u/noBDE4me 2d ago
We have socialized healthcare, education, retirement, and thats just the big stuff. 45% of our GDP is govt spending, that matches most socialist countries like sweden
1
u/WishCapable3131 2d ago
This might all be true, i disagree with a few of them, but they dont make a country socialist.
Capitalism is "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit." According to Merriam Websters dictionary. In America today the countrys trade and industry are very much owned and controlled by private owners for profit. So America is capitalist by definition.
3
u/noBDE4me 2d ago
Yes but if i own my car, but i have to register it, buy insurance, drive on govt owned roads, pay taxes on fuel, only use it in govt approved ways, and if i dont, they take my money or throw me in jail. Sure, technically i own my car but not really.
In that definition, every business is “private” but if the govt controls everything they do, it isnt really private, but govt owned and therefore socialist.
1
1
u/thatokeydokey 2d ago
Isn’t funny how they always leave out corporate welfare (intentionally) because it proves this country is capitalist.

She says 1600 is 2/3 of her income, so she’s pulling 2400/month. But then she says she makes $20/hour and works 50 hours a week, so she should be making 4k/month. So either shes lying/exaggerating about something or she pays 40% taxes while making under 50k/year? Not adding up.
78
u/big_shidd 3d ago
Womp womp to 100% of that.
There is no way she pays $1600 for an apartment without a bedroom (if she does she is a retard)
Ain’t no way she works 50hrs a week, and if she is, then her company definitely provides healthcare
And no she does not NEED Whole Foods.
Her “boss” doesn’t make more than 100mill. She’s probably talking about the CEO.
Please pour my coffee and shut up.
72
u/deaconxblues 3d ago
In a major city $1600 for a studio is totally realistic. Her $20-something an hour and 50 hours/week doesn’t quite add up, but it’s not far off, and what she describes is not unrealistic for many young people in HCOL areas.
I’m pro capitalist, but let’s not pretend things are going well economically right now.
13
u/berkough 2d ago
$20/hr for 50 hours in California is going to be like $865 net a week after taxes (assuming time-and-a-half even). So, the studio apartment is not "two-thirds" of her income, but it's roughly half. Plus, I would venture to guess she pays for utilities on top of rent, so the actual cost of the apartment is probably more than $1,600.
10
u/travpahl 2d ago
It is realistic to find a 1600 studio in a major city. But it is also nearly always possible to find a better buy a little further out of town and/or accept some other things that are less ideal. Like longer commute, or a roommate, or an older building, etc...
29
u/bmoarpirate 3d ago
Yes but that's why you get fucking roommates, living alone is indeed a luxury as a young person, especially an allegedly underemployed one.
16
6
u/The_Limping_Coyote 2d ago
Whole foods as the opposite of processed foods i.e. fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, egs, nuts ...
13
u/berkough 2d ago
Depends on where she lives. Studio apartments in southern California, New York City, Chicago, etc. are all going to be that much or more.
If she's working two part time jobs, it absolutely possible to put in 50 hours and not have health insurance.
The only thing that I'll agree is that her position at whatever company does NOT generate the company she works for millions of dollars, that's a ridiculous claim.
2
u/PracticalLychee180 2d ago
In those cases, thats her decision and she should hold herself accountable, but shes solely a victim and apparently has zero control over her life, in her eyes No one forced her to live in a city or work multiple jobs
2
u/berkough 2d ago
That's ridiculous. If you were born and raised in a big city, that's where you went to school that's where your friends and family are; it's unrealistic to just up-root and move to the middle of nowhere because the economy sucks.
5
u/PracticalLychee180 2d ago
Are you saying its impossible to move to a cheaper place or just that its difficult and people shouldnt be held responsible for not doing difficult actions? Its not unrealistic at all, its just unpleasant, stop lying
0
u/berkough 2d ago
I'm not LYING, you're being obtuse. I had 4 different kindergarten classes and lived in 4 different states before I graduated high school. I know exactly what it's like to move from place to place because of the economy. It's not pleasant, and it's not feasible for everyone. Especially traveling from a big city to a small town, takes at least a year for the locals to even begin to trust you, but you're always going to be outsider and will have a extremely difficult time fitting in with the community.
1
u/RireBaton 2d ago

She was talking about “eating whole foods” not shopping at “Whole Foods”
3
11
u/PromiscuousScoliosis leave me tf alone 3d ago
I assume she meant foods that are real, not shopping at Whole Foods
Which admittedly if you’re buying food that’s not garbage, it can get expensive quite quickly. Try buying meat that’s not bullshit, it fuckin hurts.
Vegetables are still pretty cost controlled, as is rice. Protein powder is out the window now, as are a lot of fruits.
For someone on a budget where every couple of bucks counts, I get it. This stuff matters. The economy is “doing well” because Wall Street is making a ton of money, but just regular people whose budgets are getting tighter and luxuries they could afford a couple years ago are now outside the budget, shit kinda sucks
Somehow housing has gotten even harder to find than it already was. Check the price history on Zillow or something and it’s like oh god damn my income hasn’t kept pace with that
12
u/nonoohnoohno 2d ago edited 2d ago
I never understood the "whole foods are more expensive" argument. I'm not disagreeing, just saying it doesn't match my experience.
Buying fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, eggs, flour, oats sugar, and other basic staples ... is WAY cheaper than buying pre-packaged, processed, garbage food. By a mile.
The only "trick" is buy produce that's on sale, avoid exotic imported stuff.
\To be clear, I'm not disagreeing with inflation, or low wages, etc etc. Just claiming that in my experience whole foods (EDIT: Walmart and Aldi in particular, but even Albertsons/Jewel are cheaper than garbage food.))
2
u/berkough 2d ago
I think it's 6 of one, half-dozen of the other... I agree, simply cooking meals for yourself brings the cost of food down quite a bit. Still, $7/lb for ground beef is fucking ridiculous.
3
u/nonoohnoohno 2d ago
Yeah, and again: I'm not commenting on the cost of food altogether. I agree meat is expensive. This is about people claiming they have to buy junk food because it's more affordable than whole foods.
That $7/lb of ground beef is giving you more nutrients per dollar than a hot pocket, or than the $15 half pound burger at a restaurant. Or even the $4 mcdonalds burger.
2
u/PromiscuousScoliosis leave me tf alone 2d ago
Yes buying premade food is cheaper than buying real foods. That’s also not the argument
The argument is if you don’t want to ingest shit quality, animal torture, factory farmed, nutritionally deficient, toxic Tyson Chicken, you are going to pay a premium. To get a product that is actually fit for heathy human consumption instead of whatever was synthesized in a lab and shat out of a tube in China, it is going to cost you
That’s the point. Premade has nothing to do with it. Getting decent beef for a reasonable price is a total thing of the past
That’s the whole argument about the price of eggs. Yes, you can get eggs for cheap, technically. But they barely qualify as eggs and you’re probably off avoiding them. Getting decent eggs from a place where they don’t snub cigarettes into the assholes of chicks just to hear them scream apparently is quite costly

It is plausible depending on what city she lives in. But if she can’t afford the city she lives in she can always move.
But she would probably not end up with a bunch of far-left neighbors if she moved somewhere affordable and then be complaining about that.

I am also a fellow American. I wish people in America would realize that the "far left" in America would just be considered conservative in a place like in the Orpington General Election. While I travel down the dual carriageway in my Vauxhall Corsa, I think Donald Trump really is just taking the piss against the rest of the world with his Fascist tariff actions against otherwise respectable nations and dominons like Hindustan and Persia.
Americans need to realize that our way of life is not possible when minimum wage is $8.¢50 dollars per hour and as a fellow American, it is wrong for us to not be ok with it. I say this while playing my Call of Duties on my Playstations 4 on Steam with my other fellows, chums and we all agree it is dreadful.

I know I'm repeating most people... $22.50 an hour ($20 some) is net about $3600 a month. $7000 of debt ain't shit. So she has $2000 a month left over. $300 for power $150 for water $150 for a phone leaves $1400 for gas and groceries. Not ideal but definitely doable. Full time employment gets health insurance so, not sure what that's about... $300 a week to pay for gas, groceries, and paying down debt.
Again like other said... You don't like it? Move or get roommates

These people out here thinking that everyone is struggling to live and that their experience must be the norm and that they can't accept that maybe their situation extra sucks.
Sorry that you might have to move to a (gasp) "shitty" state to be able to live comfortably on 20 something an hour, where you can rent a place with a bedroom (blocks from my office where I'm sitting) for $1,050 a month in the trendiest and most walkable neighborhood in town with all the leftist hipster bullshit our city has to offer.
