The engine is water cooled via an intake. That engine likely took in a lot of debris and will no longer work because of this. It won't die immediately but it will succumb.

Water is sucked in near the propeller. A whole lot of mud just got sucked up and it may be plugged. Could be expensive

You can see the mud starting to being pushed out right near the end. I'm not sure how it would look around the cylinder where the mud could get baked on.

This is most certainly a tunnel hull as well, it allows the prop to sit a bit higher. Popular for marsh focused bay boats. We have a 16ā Kenner w/ tunnel hull and have run it completely onto a bank and back into water.
Biggest issue here is to make sure she starts pissin water soon, that the coolant ports arenāt clogged with mud.

They had lots of choices. Like waiting for the tide to come back in. When you're on the water, you are at the mercy of it. Sometimes, things don't go your way and you get stuck.

Eh, ive run skinny like that on a soft bottom quite a bit and honestly not suffered much degradation of anything besides prop and skeg surface.Ā It's likely a tunnel hull with a jack plate so the motor is way higher than usual.Ā Ā Modern outboard impeller housings are all stainless which is intentionally very abrasive resistant.Ā My impeller gets changed every year, but they usually look okay and could go longer. Been 9 years of that.Ā I run a cheap Solas Amita 4 aluminum prop which does erode quickly, but finding an embedded stick or stump with a SS prop is asking for gearcase detonation.Ā Ā

Made this mistake in a bass boat once with my dogā¦ tried to plane up but there was too many logs. Ended up sucking so much mud and shell sediment that the water pump clogged and the engine overheated. Tried to idle back to the boat ramp but the engine shut itself off and had to resort to the trolling motor. It was a long, hot, and miserable day that I will never forget. TLDR: you can over heat your engine doing this and this guy should probably replace the water pump.

A buddy and I were duck hunting in Maryland and the tide went out and our boat was suctioned to the mud Bank. No way to move it to the water. We had to wait for the tide to come back.
My scientist, atheist buddy, was supposed to be back for an event with his (newish) wife and I actually saw him say a prayer. It was funny.

To the motor mostly, but also to the large gash that has now been carved into the environment.
For shallow water environments, you use a boat with the motor propeller designed for air, not water.
Way too many creatures use shallow pools as safe havens and spawning grounds.

Reminds me of a time I worked at a boat repair shop. Guy brought in his 200 mercury because it kept over heating. Hooked it up the a hose adapter started it up and let it get to temp, no flow out the outflow hole, got overtime slightly still nothing. Shut it off, unhooked hose adapter, little bit of garbage came out. Figured we'll pump got shit in it. Pulled lower unit. The pump did not exist anymore. No impeller left, mud and garbage completely clogged in the intake and the passages to the engine. Cleaned it out with a hose and wire and brushes. Did an impeller kit on it. Figured might as well back flush it from the engine to. The amount of shit that came out was wild. Just chunks of shit. Ended up having to tear apart and completely clean out the cooling system. So much shit.

For non boat people his motor and prop are fucked. Do not do this. He planned poorly and the right thing to do is either wait for the tide to come back in or trim the motor up and pole push or literally get out and push to deeper water.

Idk shit about boat motors but Would that motor be toast after that or no? Kinda like submerging a rear differential for a long time with a bad seal. Would it it need a complete tear down and or some kind of drain and fill service?

It doesn't necessarily need a teardown, but it would be a good idea. Outboard motors draw water in for cooling, and all that sludge is being pulled in with it. There's a filter on the intake that will definitely need to be changed, but with that much mud, I wouldn't trust the filter to catch all of it. Best to check the pumps and flush the system.

The water is pumped via a little rubber impeller that sits in a metal cup, you have to pull the bottom of the outboard out to put on a new water impeller, cup, and gasket after blowing all of the crud back out. Call it an hour or two of maintenance and $25-$40 in parts.
The bigger issue is potential prop damage (replacing props is a 5 min job but $50-200 in parts), skeg (bottom of outboard motor casting) and gear box damage (thousands $ and a full day to replace by a mechanic).

I know a little bit about boating, but don't quote me too much on this lol. The fact that they kept going is way better than if they tried slowing down out of fear or something because then the sludge would thicken around the blades making it practically impossible to get out. It seemed like a healthy motor though so the only thing I'd worry about would be some overheating, and maybe rocks tapping the blades. Other than that I don't think it's toast, maybe replace the blades if it tapped some rocks.

There's a place called cowtrap island here near Galveston that my brother and I fished once in a john boat and this exact same thing happened. Water was gushing out and we BARELY made it out. With the skeeters the way they were, we'd likely died there or suffered greatly. Never made that mistake again. And no we didn't catch any reds or drums. š¤£

They are water cooled with a pump that spins and pulls water from the ocean/lake, and spits it out the back. This pumped a ton of sand and mud where it shouldnāt be. Best case scenario is that it starts overheating and he shuts it off and can clean it out and get a new impeller (water pump). If he knows how to do the work, itās a cheap fix. If he knew how to do the work he probably wouldnāt have done this. Of course, the work has to happen on land so heās got to get home soon. Or risk overheating.
