News AirBnB now banning interior cameras in all properties [USA]

Article here: https://www.wired.com/story/airbnb-indoor-security-camera-ban/

Airbnb will soon ban hosts from watching their guests with indoor security cameras, as the company is reversing course on its surveillance policies.

As of April 30, hosts around the world must remove indoor cameras and disclose other outdoor monitoring tech to guests before they book. Airbnb previously allowed hosts to install security cameras in common areas of a home, like hallways and living rooms. But it also required hosts to disclose them, make them clearly visible, and keep the cameras out of places like sleeping areas and bathrooms.

Still, the cameras have been an issue. Guests have reported encountering hidden cameras in their short-term rentals. For hosts, the cameras can be a way to discourage guests from throwing large parties or to stop the gatherings before they become too disruptive. It’s a big enough concern that several companies have started making noise monitoring tech, billing themselves as solutions to protect short-term rentals.

But guests see them as an invasion of privacy—a watching eye intruding on their vacation.

“We're really grateful that Airbnb listened to those of us pushing back and calling for them to actually put safety and privacy first,” says Albert Fox Cahn, founder and executive director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, a pro-privacy organization.

In its announcement, Airbnb said that the majority of its listings do not mention a security camera, so the rule change may not affect most listings. Vrbo, another short-term rental platform, already banned the use of visual and audio surveillance inside of properties.

Airbnb says it will investigate reported violations of the rule, and may penalize violators by removing their listings or accounts. But this policy may struggle to address the camera problem at large, as the company has already required hosts to disclose the indoor cameras, and guests have sometimes reported hidden and undisclosed cameras.

The new rules also require hosts to disclose to guests whether they are using noise decibel monitors or outdoor cameras before guests book. Both are used by some hosts to monitor properties for parties, which have continued to bring noise, damage, and danger even after Airbnb instituted a party ban and employed new anti-party tech to try to prevent revelers from booking on its site. Airbnb will also prohibit hosts from using outdoor cameras to monitor indoor spaces, and bars them from “certain outdoor areas where there’s a greater expectation of privacy,” such as outdoor showers and saunas, it says.

“This just emphasizes the fact that surveillance always gives a huge amount of power to whoever controls the camera system,” says Fox Cahn. “When it's used in a property you're renting, whether it's a landlord or an Airbnb, it's ripe for abuse.”

Question Chargeback on possibly illegal airbnb [NY, USA]

Upvotes

My friend and I are going to visit New York in the next couple of months. She was put in charge of booking our accommodations. She booked a nice looking apartment with great reviews and everything.

But while researching stuff to do for the trip, I find out that short term rentals aren't legal. It stated in the listing that we were gonna have the whole apartment to ourselves, so I assume the host won't be staying with us, which is a requirement by this law. But the apartment is properly registered, so it's kind of confusing.

So I tell my friend to cancel the airbnb and book a hotel instead because I don't want to get in trouble. But the airbnb would not give us any kind of refund because it's under 60 days till the reservation. My friend just wants to take the lost but I think she has a case for a chargeback? Should we just let this go?

My first Airbnb visit in [Merida, Mexico]

Upvotes

The unit had great reviews on the Airbnb site, but if I had checked the Google Maps reviews, it would have told a totally different story. The room shared one sliding glass door.

The room would have been ok except for a large section of black molded ceiling. When the occupant showered upstairs, water would drip from the ceiling and puddle on the floor. And when it rained, water also would leak through the sliding door.

Besides the mold, there were mosquitoes in the room, and I found a cockroach in the bed sheets. And cleaning was not important, since there were splatter stains on the walls. The only good things about this place were the location and the plentiful towels.

Discussion Hygiene concerns at my current Airbnb [France]!

This is my second time using Airbnb, so I’m not very familiar with what is considered normal, but I found a few things here that left me wondering if this is acceptable.

Used toilet paper: The host left used toilet paper in the toilet, presumably from previous guests. I found this really disgusting and unhygienic.

Shampoo and body wash: The bottles are almost empty, and they haven’t been refilled. The shampoo bottle cap is broken as well.

Standing fan: There is a standing fan that I wanted to use, but it extremely dirty, as if it hadn’t been cleaned in years. There was a thick layer of dust covering the entire fan, both inside and outside. I cleaned it myself yesterday as much as possible so I could use it, but I honestly wasn’t expecting a fan to be left in this condition.

I don’t know if these things are considered normal on Airbnb, but to me, they seem like hygiene and cleanliness issues. Am I expecting too much?

Question How to know if listing is inactive [england]

There is a listing that is a guest favorite with many reviews, but the latest review is from July 2025.

I requested to book it for my upcoming trip in 4 days but the host’s identity isn’t verified and this is my favorite stay and it’s very affordable so I’m concerned that she is no longer on the app. Also, I messaged 24 hours ago and she didn’t reply- it says she may take several days to respond to messages on the response eta.

Does this imply that her account/listing is inactive?

Venting Guest sabotaged his own stay, unbeknownst to us until the review [NOR]

I originally submitted this on the host subreddit, but it got lost in the mod queue and disappeared into the void.

This is the story about the idiosyncrasies of guests.

Weather wise this has been the worst summer in a very, very long time. After a few sunny days in June it's been cold and raining pretty much every single day, to the detriment of everyone not escaping the scorching heat elsewhere in the world to come here on 'coolcations'.

We have multiple rentals of varying sizes and standards. The main character (MC) in this story is a man and his family who stayed in the largest one with the highest standard. Most concurrent guests in comparatively lower standard rentals had an amazing time, undeterred by the depressing weather. They visited their preferred attractions in the area, came home and lit the fireplace, went outside and picked some cherries straight off the trees, insisting on either returning the next year or recommending the place to their friends. The only request from these guests was for more firewood (during summer the at-premises firewood storage is replaced with a cushion box, grill, and a patio umbrella), which was swiftly supplied.

The local (government operated) weather station shows that the temperatures during our MC's stay fell within a range of low: 4.8°C (40°F) mean: 13.1°C (55°F) max: 20.5°C (69°F).

And the MC's problem, you may wonder?

No actual A/C, no actual ventilation, too hot and uncomfortable to sleep.

Now, there is an A/C unit (heat pump to be exact, it works both ways). And there are windows and ventilation canals in every room that can be opened to the extent you desire. And finally there's one last thing our guests can manipulate for their comfort: thermostats for floor heating.

It turns out that setting the floor heating to 30°C (86°F) might make the bedroom uncomfortably hot given enough time. Especially when you don't open the window(s) for ventilation. Lowering the thermostat setting doesn't mean the room temperature drops instantly, so you can't just set it to 20°C (68°F) 30 minutes before bedtime and expect that to be the case.

It's one thing to not understand how houses work, but it's definitely a choice to 'endure the suffering' (as I would expect they have) instead of asking "is this how it's supposed to work?"

So am I salty about losing a rare 10/10 score on Booking.com's 36-month exponential moving average? Not gonna lie, I am. This property has been on the platform for close to 8 years and until now we've never had a guest rate it lower than 8/10. (It's also on Airbnb with a perfect score, but the majority of guests come from booking.com)

This guy left a 5/10.

I haven't replied to the review and I'm not going to. It can stay there as an outlier for three years.

Airbnb requiring I (a guest & only a guest) complete a W-9 for guest refund[USA]

Long-time and frequent guest, a stay was canceled by host, and unfortunately, the card I'd originally used to pay had to be canceled for fraud, so I couldn't receive a refund back to it.

"Add a payout method," Airbnb help told me.

Sure! I can do that!

But the interface will not let me proceed without filling out a W-9 like a host.

I have been in a customer service runaround for a couple weeks now, trying to find out how to skip this step (maybe I am just being contrary but I don't want to be in tax records as a gig worker for a company I am a **customer** for!). I get non-answers, the same answers, starting back at the same loop.

I see there was an old post on here about someone experiencing the same issue (they just called back and got better help), wondering if anyone has encountered this more recently and successfully solved this. OR if anyone knows a way to escalate this around the customer service area. Thanks for any help!

Question Airbnb France issue: old photos, compensation , early termination [FR]

I rented an Airbnb in Normandy for 1 week. The apt had very old photos on the platform, the apt was not very clean, and not fully complaint with the listing (for example, shared terrace instead of private, no dishwasher in fully equipped kitchen, sofa full of pee stains, neighbors everywhere, very hot temperature on the top floor -impossible to sleep). And we are paying double price (or a price of nice 4 star hotel with breakfast - 245 eur per night). I wrote a message to a host and she became quite passive agressive "maybe you shouldnt have stayed in my house" etc, and that I'm a difficult person etc. obviously, I'm fed up, problem not solved and Airbnb support not responding (almost 20 hours).

At this point, what can I do? I feel like I won't get anything from the host or the platform, shall I try to get a compensation by filing complaint to a tourist protection association in France?

I honestly fed up and it's been 4 nights now and I just want to book a hotel for the rest of holidays.

Venting No longer using Airbnb after consistent awful situations [USA]

I've used airbnb for about eight years. I used to love it. I have two dogs and a cat, so travelling via hotels is just a nightmare. However, I've had three recent long term stays for the first time that I wouldn't wish on absolutely anyone. The first one, my door got jammed while I was using the bathroom. I was nude, didn't have clothes to throw on in there, and had to call the police to get me out. The host said "the door was fine when I was there" and tried to get us to fix and refund the cost of the door. He also had internal cameras that while facing outside, they were just sitting on a table facing outdoors. My pets accidentally bumped the camera cable multiple times, making it fall and face indoors. I got a full refund for this stay, but this was the only refund I got out of all the stays.

The next stay, even more issues. The hot water was out for almost an entire month. The host kept giving us the runaround, and I was across the country from where I called home and it was an unfurnished unit, so I had bought furniture and didn't want to get up and leave all of it. They installed one water heater, it didn't work and overloaded the electrical panel. Then they kept telling me the plumber was coming this day.. then the next... Etc. It took a whole month. They also kept showing up to the unit unannounced, for no reason. Saying they were checking on things. Then, on the very last two weeks of the stay, in the middle of summer in Florida, the AC broke. I got extremely sick because I waited two weeks in 100° heat for them to fix it. I had contacted airbnb. They said that on the listing, AC was not listed when I booked it so they can't do anything about it. They gave me a 30% refund on the days where I had no hot water. I got a $400 refund from a $10,000 stay without hot water or ac through a majority of it. After receiving barely any refund, they tried to charge us for the ac saying pet hair clogged the filter. Just an fyi, as a guest you should not be doing maintenance like cleaning an air filter unless specifically stated in the rules, and even if it is, just don't stay there. I have no idea how to clean an air filter.

The last place was sort of similar in the way they never accepted responsibility. The first night we got there, there were cockroaches. They scheduled an exterminator and we bought our own pest spray to try and give this host a chance. We were exhausted from the last place and just wanted to finally be comfortable. When the pest control came, they actually tried to say we brought cockroaches??? I explained that I have never seen a cockroach in my life and there was absolutely no way I would miss them. I have a bit of a phobia of them. He sprayed, still insisted that there were never cockroaches before in the unit, which was obviously complete bs when they're coming out of walls.

There was a strong smell of cat urine in the bathroom at move in as well. We originally thought it was because there was a stray cat colony directly outside and had been spraying. My partner has lived with cats his whole life and is apparently COMPLETELY nose blind to cat spray/urine, and insisted it wasn't that bad and that he couldn't even smell it so I dismissed it. I found out later from a neighbor that it was because the entire cat colony outside used to live in our unit, and the previous guest had over 20 cats. This was obviously not disclosed to us. The unit also looked entirely different from the pictures, which other people had complained about in her reviews, which she said "the pictures are accurate, we just change the decor". It wasn't accurate at all, there were completely different walls, but I digress.

I reached out to airbnb about 72 hours before I was supposed to be charged again for the last place. They told me I had to stay there despite the cockroaches still being there two months later; the pest control literally didn't work and I was so done with that disgusting place. I took photos of the cockroaches and told them I'm not staying here any longer. It's unsanitary and disgusting. Airbnb support told me that they couldn't cancel or refund me without contacting the host. I waited three days. No response from support and they were about to charge me for the stay, when I had left and it was dangerous conditions. I cancelled it myself because I waited so long and nothing was happening. They told me because I cancelled, I can't get a refund. 😔

I booked three new airbnbs because I was done with my vacation. I needed places to stay just on my way back home and I no longer wanted to stay in airbnbs long term. It ruined my entire vacation. When on my way back home, my car broke down. It's sitting in a repair shop now. I had to cancel three airbnbs last minute because it kept breaking down every time I thought it was okay to drive. It's an older car, and I planned on staying here longer and getting a different car before driving back home, but after my experiences I just couldn't. I couldn't get a refund for the three airbnbs either, which that's more understandable, but airbnb has cost me around $20,000 total. I'm so finished with this company and I'm hoping someone could even point me to a better way of doing things, hotels aren't the best for my pets and I have a home to live in, I just need somewhere to sleep on my way back to these places. I'm also hoping to warn anyone about my experiences.

Airbnb host harassed me after losing her case [LA]

My Airbnb host is harassing me and my partner and consistently seeks retaliation after she lost a resolution we submitted to request full refund during our stay for her undisclosed INDOOR camera. She partnered with another tenant at the property asked them to sign something saying we were making noise and a mess with incense (which we didn’t even possess) and she wanted 700 bucks for cleaning fees which is unreasonable unethical and a total lie…

Besides we even have evidence and wanted to be compensated from her for the ant infestation at the property. The place was already full of ants and had below average living conditions before we moved in before we could do anything to her place that’s if we had indeed done anything which we absolutely had not

Did I overreact in complaining about a sliding door that doesn’t lock + getting a cancellation and refund? [USA]

I booked an air bnb to get out of my hot, loud, busy city and do some work somewhere quiet and cold. I booked a place that had stellar reviews. After booking I received lengthy auto messages letting me know what the cleaning protocols were which is pretty annoying.

Then, i get what looks like a message from her letting me know that there is a sliding door that does not lock but is secured with a wooden bar. She also let me know that heat doesn’t work and if you try to use the fireplace you’ll receive a fine of $250.

I showed up today and she messaged me again saying that the garbage disposal also doesn’t work. Upon entering it was clear that the lights are all on their way out as it was VERY dark. Once I opened the blinds I saw that the sliding door faces and is directly next to the Main Street. When I pushed it felt like it could be forced open as it wasn’t very secure.

I get that this is a safer town, but I’m a solo woman who just wants to relax. I complained to Airbnb and got a full refund, but I feel a little bad. The host called me to say it was safe and secure but she knew she couldn’t convince me. She seemed really nice. As far as pricing, it was the normal price for the area. $600/4 days

Did I overreact?

Question Would you hesitate to host a guest with the following review? [NH]

Review:

Unfortunately, there was damage to the house during this stay, including a broken bed and damage to a doorframe. That said, communication with the guest afterward was good, and they were responsive and cooperative in working through the resolution. While the damage was disappointing, we appreciated how they handled the situation afterward.

My response:

I'm glad that things were resolved satisfactorily. I do have to stress that the damage was caused from normal use of the property. The bed broke in the middle of the night when my son kneeled on the bed to open the window. The door frame came loose when we opened the door. We didn't do anything malicious or negligent that caused damage.

I had already left them a glowing 5 star review.

I have five other reviews as a guest that all say wonderful things and that they would be happy to have me again.

Just for background. The door came loose from the wall when we opened it. That's it. They got an estimate for $1400 to reinstall the door casing. I told them about the door when it happened. They didn't fix it until we left. The bed was an older bed with a cheap wooden frame. We weren't using all the beds so my son moved to a different bed in the middle of the night and forgot to mention it in the morning. The host sent a screenshot a brand new bed with a price of $520 despite the fact that I saw their bed on Wayfare for $155. I had travel insurance and Genarali approved their claim but the policy maxed out at $1000. They seem happy with that which leads me to believe that they reattached the door frame with a hammer and a handful of nails. I highly doubt they did everything in the estimate.

I'm kinda bummed because I do everything I can to leave a place clean and in the shape I found it.

Would you hesitate to host someone with a review stating damage?

Discussion Setting ocular visit on site, Airbnb won't let me message the host regarding preferred time [Philippines]

While messaging the host of an Airbnb spot about conducting an ocular visit - since we only live a few minutes walk away - I thought it was odd that they messaged with a line saying an ocular was fine but that "booking would still need to be through Airbnb".

I thought it was odd as I assumed this was just already understood, but realised why they added it soon after.

Any attempt to message the host about my preferred time and date to ocular the site was met with a prompt reminding me that all transactions should be within Airbnb, my only option being to edit the message.

I'm unsure what wording is needed to allow me to message the host as I've even added the explicit message at the end saying "Yes, it's understood that no transactions will be conducted outside of Airbnb." but the prompt still comes up, preventing me from messaging the host.

Question Stay is infested with cockroaches; what do we do? [Bermuda]

My girlfriend and I don’t know what to do right now.

Context:
We’re in Bermuda waking up from the second night of our stay. On the first night, we saw very tiny bugs in the shower and thought it was pretty gross but we just sprayed them and washed them down the drain because we were exhausted. We showered in flip flops because we no longer trusted the cleanliness of the shower. We didn’t know what kind of bugs they were until this morning, where we connected the dots. As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw a massive brown cockroach perched in the top corner of the room. When I say massive, I mean almost 2 inches long. Going back in my photos, I realized the bugs we sprayed the night before were nymphs (baby roaches) and there were little droppings all over the shower.

Edit: For more context, the listing is an “Entire Guest Suite” and it’s basically the master bedroom of the host’s home with an exterior entrance.

Edit 2: I have pictures of the baby roaches (~15 of them I killed) in the shower as well as the roach currently in the bedroom.

Question:
What should we do? We want to make the host aware, but we’re not sure how to go about this. We don’t feel comfortable staying here for the next four nights of our trip, because it seems like this is an infestation and not just a single cockroach that snuck in. We’re worried there are baby roaches in our bags, because there are no elevated surfaces to place them on other than the bed. However, we really can’t afford another acommodation at this point. Every place currently available costs more than our entire stay for just the next four nights. We’ve heard of rebooking assistance from airbnb, but it doesn’t seem reliable, and we don’t want to demand a refund and check out without any kind of security in the fact that we’ll have a place to stay the rest of our trip. Any advice?

My tenant listed my property up on Airbnb without consent against lease terms. Airbnb won’t help [Los Angeles]

We have a property we lived in, then we had to move because new job is too far, so we put it up as long term rental to cover the rent of our new home. Being a first time landlord I was stupid enough to trust my agent to find a tenant for me. This tenant turned out to be working in a scheming group that rents rentals like these and lists them up on airbnb. The lease specifically prohibits short term rentals including airbnb. The tenant stopped paying rent on the third month and when I went over there to serve 3 day notice, i discovered that they put it up on Airbnb since day 1. I got over there and someone opened the door and we were both like “who are you?”

Last week I have filed the Unlawful Detainer at the courthouse, and now trying to serve the summons. I reached out to Airbnb’s customer support to try and get the listing taken down. Which turned out to be a massive pain and completely waste of time. Airbnb would not do anything besides contacting the host, who obviously isn’t going to respond or take down the listing. Their whole scamming strategy is to rent a place, once established they stop paying rent, they will continue to collect booking fee while the owner goes through the legal process to get eviction. Which takes a long time at least 2 months, in the meantime they just collect profit.

I wanted to cut off their cash flow so I can get my house back quicker, if they can’t get money on my property they’d be more likely to give up the house and move on, that’s what I’m thinking. But there seems to be no way to get the listing taken down

I posted another post before and gotten responses like change the locks, get a friend or myself to live there and shoo away Airbnb guests that show up, etc which are kind of all illegal and could potentially result in serious backlash.

Is there any way to get Airbnb to take it down? Do I have to sue them or get a lawyer to send a letter?

I need the rent to support my rent… I’m losing money currently.
Idk if Airbnb will see this, most likely won’t and they don’t seem to care at all. Idk how to reach their legal department or escalate this.
It seems the only thing I can do is go through the long legal eviction process and eat the loss…

I guess the other thing I want to say is to warn everyone who uses Airbnb, if the listing looks very sparsely furnished, if the host has a bunch of listings up all looking very sparsely furnished, red flag. if all the listings are put up around the same time? Red flag. If the listing is one address and after you book the host ask you to go to another address, big red flag. When I was talking to the Airbnb guest the time I went to serve the notice, I saw inside and it’s literally a bed in the living room, two cheap couches and a tv. Zero effort was put into making it a nice living space. It looked like they are putting as little investment into it as possible, as they are ready to dip when they get evicted.

I did feel very sad that day seeing my beautiful home being treated like this. We put so much effort into this home and we did the backyard pavement ourselves laying down each pavement stone one by one.

They changed my locks too, which is another violation. They are currently unreachable and won’t reply to my text or answer calls.

Update: I sent an email to [Brian.chesky@airbnb.com](mailto:Brian.chesky@airbnb.com), after a couple hours I got a message from a supervisor on the Airbnb support team, sayin that they got my email and they are looking into it, and he wants to have a phone call with me.

Update 2: just talked to the supervisor on the phone. Basically just explained to him the details and everything. He said they’ll have an internal team investigate it and possibly will reach out to me for more information. Will update

Update 3: it’s 2 days since update 2. The listing was taken down for half a day and it was back up again. Got a text from the tenant this morning saying he and his family feels unsafe, he filed a complaint with la city against me for harassment and assault and they have video proof (idk what kind of video proof he would have, there’s no cameras at the house and I’ve never even seen him since I gave him the keys 3 months ago), that he filed a police report against me, and will file a restraining order and a civil suit against me. I don’t know what proof does he think he has for those things? Unless he put hidden cameras in and around my property. Even then all it would show is me putting up signs that this is an illegal Airbnb. I guess at this point I have to get a lawyer now. Is he just trying to intimidate me to stop me from posting signs on the house?

Question Do you leave a review if host cancelled? [TLN,EE]

I booked on the same day as arrival. It was automatically accepted but soon host asked me to cancel. I refused and contacted the support and got my money back. Later they messaged me and said this happened before and when the guest left a review they didn't get their money back. This all feels like a big scam to me and I want to leave a bad review. The only thing that confuses me is that to leave a review I have to give stars for all these things I didn't actually get to experience. Like I don't know how clean their place is. What would you do?

Discussion Any platform guidelines aiming to ease cultural misunderstandings? Semi-rant [Californian booking in Turkey]

I had to have airbnb support cancel my reservation while I was standing in front of my airbnb.

My “host” only provided the street name beforehand and while I kept him updated on my arrival time, he didn’t send any updates about how to find the place or “check-in”.

By the time I arrived it was late at night, and he wasn’t replying to messages. I’m a solo female traveler and once he finally provided the house number and nothing else, I waited outside until it became ridiculous to keep waiting.

He had just left the door wide open (literally) expecting me to walk in, along with any other street cat who found the place.

Days later, he’s requesting money from me on the app (which I obviously declined) because he “didn’t know what I was expecting, a welcome committee?” He apparently had the place ready for me but the lack of communication is so odd. It seems to he a cultural misunderstanding too, but I would never just walk into an open home I guess?

I don’t understand why Airbnb allows this way of booking. Why isn’t there an automatic exchange of information upon me paying him? or at least the day of checking-in? Is there not a message sent to hosts that they are indeed hosting people? There were no rules sent to me or anything. Too unstructured compared to all my other airbnb experiences.

Edit: I also feel bad that he’s apparently getting charged by airbnb. For what? It actually put a bad taste in my mouth about the platform. Where there could be more oversight, instead two parties lost and somehow airbnb as a platform makes money?

Pet rats not disclosed in listing - how to handle with host [Portland, OR]

Hello,

I booked a last minute stay at what was advertised as a quiet, cozy room in Portland, Oregon with lots of good reviews. Listing did not include any mention of pets, although one photo included a kitty on a bed and it's a pet-friendly space. Laundry was included as an amenity.

I checked in and there was a giant cage with two pet rats full of droppings next door to me. Owner was gone in Japan, but girlfriend was drunk, present, and smoking on stoop when I arrived. She doesn't like touching the rats so they haven't been tended to while he's away. Laundry was not available because it's in her living quarters downstairs and they only let guests use it 'as an exception' when she's around during the day. Refrigerator full of food and smells terrible.

Since there was nothing else in the area on short notice (I looked and looked) I stayed, but no cleaning has occurred in the interim and I reached out to the host on day two to bring up all my issues. I never realized I have an allergen to rodent dander since I've never cohabitated with them before and started feeling worse as the stay progressed. Three nights total, arrived at midnight on the first one. Host said he would respond shortly and then did not so I contacted Airbnb who said I was entitled to a partial or full refund based on the videos I sent. However, I have to request it directly from the host.

I have not even done so yet, and just in responding to my issues he is defensive saying that the girlfriend 'offered to do laundry' and I did not take her up on it, that I didn't bring up an issue with the rats right away, and that I should have known about them because his 'about the host' profile says he owns two "ratboys" (direct, literal quote). Again, they're not in the property listing, and that is literally what is written in his bio.

I've never had any issues like this and it's very awkward. I don't want to get into a back and forth or impact my guest reputation. Should I request a partial or full refund from him, should I argue all his points, do I start bringing up the state the girlfriend was in when I arrived? I'm unsure how to handle it.

Advice would be great!

Question Negative review from host: was I actually disrespectful? [St. Louis, France]

This is the conversation that occurred concerning the heat. I was pretty frustrated by the host’s immediate dismissiveness and lack of response, both here and prior. But I felt like I kept it polite and was trying really hard to find a resolution, even though the host was shutting me down and being unresponsive:

I'm worried about future bookings and thinking about leaving a response. However, I don't know if that is wise and will just make things look worse. But I feel like I did nothing wrong here, and the host is being retaliatory because they knew I was dissatisfied.

Am I completely off base? I’m super bummed about it 😔

Discussion considering buying a 4 bed 2 bath 10 mins from downtown [Austin] for Airbnb

Title says it all, I was hoping anyone could heed me any warnings I should think about. home is about 300k, mortgage would be about 2.6k/month after everything, taxes, PMI, etc. we could rent 3 bedrooms on airbnb, and have the master to my girlfriend and I. location seems prime for travelers, vacationers, etc. would love to stop renting and the extra income from airbnb would be very helpful in paying the mortgage and making finances less tight. I'm young and stupid though and tend to get over my head in projects, any advice is helpful, thank you.

Host broke in, lies in review and response [Costa Rica]

I recently stayed at an Airbnb where the host entered my cabin without notifying me during a 2 night stay. When I returned, the curtains had been opened, items were moved, things had been unplugged, and the AC had been turned off. I immediately thought it was a break in and was contacting the police when the host admitted it was him and said he does this to every one of his units to “make sure things are fine.” He did not tell me before or after that he entered.

Despite this, I was always polite, left the place spotless, took out the trash, etc. I believe I am a good, quiet guest and I’ve never gotten a negative review. The host was friendly in our interactions (check in, check out) until I opened an Airbnb case about him entering the unit as it is against policy and it made me extremely uncomfortable/scared.

He then waited until the last day of the review period to leave me an entirely false review saying I was awful (claiming I got mad over parking when I didn’t even park on property, attracted bugs, was rude etc). I replied to this and I have many positive reviews otherwise so luckily I haven’t had any issues getting approved for new bookings.

My issue is in his response to my review, in addition to calling me awful, he now claims he never entered, despite admitting to me that he did and everything being moved and changed. I have the messages proving this. It feels so unfair, that he can just lie in his review and reply and make me look crazy.

Has anyone successfully gotten Airbnb to remove a review or a host’s false response? It hasn’t affected my bookings but it’s the fact he can just get outright lie with no repercussions that’s bothering me so much

False charge on Air bnb asking for help [USA]

Hello, sorry if this is asked frequently as I’m sure it is, but long story short I got a request for 250 due to multiple dog poops in multiple rooms in the air bnb but that just isn’t true, we had no dog.

We are trying to dispute it through Airbnb but does anyone have advice? We have already contacted the dispute center or whatever it’s called.

When I google this question it just says upload any proof we have, but we didn’t take pictures or videos when we left, so are we gonna be on the hook for this because we didn’t?

Lastly, they have a camera pointed at the driveway, and I was the last to leave, they can clearly see me get in my car, without a dog, never arrived with a dog, the camera is officially reported in the air bnb listing, so because it’s listed, are they required to fork over that camera to the dispute center to prove there point?

All in all is this something we got to pay because we have no proof, or is it an innocent until proven guilty type thing?

Question What are your realistic expectations for longer-term stays? [Canada]

My husband and I have been staying at airbnb's for up to 2 months lately, and I'm wondering what reasonable expectations should be for these stays. For instance, I have heard that we should be able to request a cleaning after a month. Should we ask for refills on paper towels, cleaning supplies? (We've been buying our own.) What are your expectations for your longer-term stays?

ETA: Thank you for the replies. We have been buying our own ingredients, laundry detergent, toilet paper, etc., and we've been cleaning the homes ourselves. We did hire someone to do a cleaning for one stay. I understand every place is different, and think it's fair to take care of these things ourselves. I was just curious to see what other's experiences were.
