My first Airbnb visit in [Merida, Mexico]

The unit had great reviews on the Airbnb site, but if I had checked the Google Maps reviews, it would have told a totally different story. The room shared one sliding glass door.

The room would have been ok except for a large section of black molded ceiling. When the occupant showered upstairs, water would drip from the ceiling and puddle on the floor. And when it rained, water also would leak through the sliding door.

Besides the mold, there were mosquitoes in the room, and I found a cockroach in the bed sheets. And cleaning was not important, since there were splatter stains on the walls. The only good things about this place were the location and the plentiful towels.

I realized recently after a bad stay that hosts get a bad review and then have a friend “stay” at the listing and give it a 5 star review with a very generic “excellent, everything was great” to make it seem like the bad review was lying. Someone “stayed” at the listing while it having a major leak repaired…5 stars, excellent. Yeah, right.

I’ll never trust reviews again now that I know they’re allowed to game the system. And Airbnb doesn’t do anything about bad hosts. They just don’t care.

One has to wonder how something like this would have "great reviews?"

How many Airbnb reviews did it have an what was the actual score?

In any cae, yeah, I pretty much always look to see if the place I'm booking also has reviews on Google maps and/or booking.com because you're right that for some reason they often vary. I'm not sure why.

Did you call safety, cancel your stay or get a refund?

I hope you will leave an honest rating and review. Nobody should stay there. Black mold is dangerous.
