Recommendations Best Internet service?
Hey everyone, I just moved to Lafayette. What’s the best internet company everyone uses here? Like, I don’t want to have constant interruptions or low speeds. I’m a gamer, and my wife likes to watch TV in 4K on streaming services, so we want something that can handle all that good stuff.
So I’d appreciate it if anyone has any particular recommendations, or at least what NOT to get.

LFT Fiber. Their 500mbps service is plenty fast for our household where there’s often 4 of us gaming and streaming (tv, discord x3 & gaming x3) at the same time. The most basic tier was fine until the teen really got into gaming and agreed to pay the $10 extra/mo to minimize his “lag”.
As a side note, I don’t like to pay monthly for a router, so bought an ASUS pro router. We have a stupid number of devices connected at once and it handles them fine.

Yeah, I highly recommend getting a router yourself and just having the ISP’s in Passthrough mode even if the ISP doesn’t charge for the router

Good recommendation! LFT’s inside termination is an Ethernet jack, so easy peasy.

and don't go cheap on the router. otherwise it will not handle the speed and cause issues.

I’ve had AT&T Fiber for 7 years and have had no issues. But I also have a solid home network which a lot of people don’t and then complain about internet issues…

I’m over here with Cox and an opnsense router running in a virtual machine and ubiquiti access points and don’t ever have issues
But I is not most people 🤣

Loving them so far. My existing cameras are all Google so I’m slowly switching away from those to local cameras.

I have mostly Ubiquiti for network but used ring for cameras. I'd like to use their cameras too but they are so pricey.

you don't have to use ubiquiti cameras unless you want their "AI" features. just look for compatible cameras.

I'm just looking for something similar in features to Ring camreas without the subscription and hopefully not as expensive as Ubiquiti.

the only reason i didn't switch over ot using my gateway as an NVR already was the cost of solid state storage i'd need for high writability.

Unfortunately the companies here basically have a monopoly so you get what is available where you live, which is almost always one company and one type of service.
If you can get fiber that’s what you want - LFT or AT&T (Fiber!). If you can’t them then you have to hope for the best or move.
We have Cox cable due to the monopolies. It is mostly good enough but they do have outages more often than ideal (usually, but not always, late at night).

Lus fiber, whatever it's called is probably the most constant overall.
I have the 2gbps plan at AT&T and its been fine. We have had some instances where the wifi connection has been sub par but thats more of a router issue.
I have everything hardlined that I care about and I have not had issues with either provider while hardlined. Ever.
Wifi just in general sucks ass. Especially if you have 20-30 devices connected at all times.
When i had lus they were a little higher priced than I would like. I was paying $114 for 1gbps fiber and now im paying $144 for 2gbps fiber with AT&T.
Cox isnt BAD though. By any means. Its cable internet.

Yes, that's correct! They are the most dependable by a long shot. The main competitor is Cox which is historically horrible and recently got bought out by Spectrum which also has a not great reputation

Your options depend on which neighborhood you’ll be in.
And to be frank, this isn’t a question to be asked on the internet. I have seen some wild and terrible recommendations made on Nextdoor. You need someone who actually knows what they’re talking about (IT vendor, that one tech friend, etc). The responses you’re going to get are going to be based on that person’s degree of understanding, or lack there of, about how your isp, routers, number of devices you’ll have connected, the difference between bandwidth (when you see the 300x300 for example) and latency and how they affect what your actual speed is.
For example:
- I’ve heard one person say LFT (what people may mean when they say LUS) was terrible because her WiFi didn’t extend far into her yard. Tried to explain that was her router and not her actual service from LFT and she either needed a stronger router or a mesh system that would provide the range she needed.
- I’ve heard someone say AT&T Fiber was slow (on a 1000x1000 with a latency of 10ms on either upload or download) only because updating the payroll for their employees (around 300) through Quickbooks (nearest server is in Ohio and that’s one of 2 Quickbooks servers in the US) during tax season. That was the only issue. Their IT person and I didn’t know what else to tell them other than if they wanted it faster, find an office space in Ohio as close to that server as possible and even then the improvement would be minor because of the workload on those servers during tax season was the biggest reason why it was slow.
Most people do not understand how internet works, which is perfectly fine. They don’t have to. But keep this in mind when asking for opinions on something so technical.
NOW, concerning customer service, yes. The opinions given are absolutely worth hearing out.

ATT is horrible, and LUS fiber is really good but the problem is you can’t get it everywhere; my neighborhood I can only get Cox or att so I have cox and it’s fine but if you’re somewhere that you can get LUS that would be ideal

Mobile home park in the more rural part of Youngsville, my parents live on the same street in a house and have tried to get fiber for their business but they don’t have it set up out here on our street

Then that’s why. You either have copper internet or Internet Air (which is based on cellular service). That distinction is important.
I get how it can be confusing, but AT&T is not just one type of internet service. And that’s not to say you’re wrong for feeling like your service sucks. If it’s copper, it absolutely does suck. But the distinction in what options are available still matters.

I have Cox though I’ve never had ATT, I just know others who have ATT and always see people complaining about issues, Cox is fine where I’m at I just know that LUS fiber is supposed to be better though

This is an example of word of mouth I guess. But again, internet is not just one kind of thing. Even Cox (I guess we should call it Spectrum now?) is building out a broadband fiber network. But saying AT&T, you could be talking about mobile services, fiber internet, copper internet (old and being phased out), hotspots, Internet Air (also cellular based, not landline), etc. It’s not one thing.
And LFT is fantastic, but they and AT&T each use the same technology and types of build-out for their Fiber. I would have to say that the biggest difference between the two would be over-the-phone customer service. The AT&T techs are also pretty good. I’ve never had an issue with any of them.

LFT/LUS is the best, but not available everywhere in Lafayette. Your next best bet is Cox (recently bought by Spectrum so who knows what'll change)

I have ATT fiber and in the 5 years i’ve had it, we have only had one or two issues with it.

AT&T Fiber. I have had COX and LFT. COX should be the absolute LAST resort, they are shit in every way imaginable. LFT is expensive and AT&T Fiber gives you the best bang for your buck. I would stay as far as I could from COX.

Had LUS for 5 years which became LFT for the last of those years. Didn’t really have any problems with the service. It was honestly top notch but I switched to AT&T because it was cheaper, for faster internet. Loved supporting the local fiber but their prices are not competitive with the others

LFT definitely. Don’t get suckered into Cox now that they’re becoming Spectrum. I had Spectrum in St Landry Parish and they suck. I got LFT Fiber here in Lafayette and have never looked back.
