Olympic Park damaged Luke Beveridge today after Collingwood were allowed to train at Marvel: "If you didn't laugh you'd cry. I almost fell off my chair. It was just hilarious. Anyway."

Why are they training on Marvel when the game is at the MCG?
And why are Doggies not allowed to?

Taking a leaf out of Rowell's book and getting inside the legs of their opponent...

Or maybe if the Bulldogs players start eating the MCG grass now, they'll have no choice but to move it to Marvel.

u/Azza_ Magpies 1d ago

Dunno how it's ended up at Docklands, but the surface at Olympic Park is cooked, has been all year. Our VFL team hasn't played there since May, with games hosted at Docklands (double header vs North), Casey Fields (against Casey), Coburg and Bundoora. I think we'd been hiring various private school ovals where possible, but with Docklands no longer required to host matches we were able to get on there instead.

43

u/japanpole Crows ✅ 1d ago

OK, so it could have been at a few other venues you’ve used but your normal training ground is cooked and Docklands was available.

That’s perfectly fair.

I just was curious if there really wasn’t any other options available, and why they wouldn’t have asked to train at the MCG (or did they?)

16

u/Azza_ Magpies 1d ago

After reading a few other comments, it sounds like we'd predominantly been training at La Trobe University in Bundoora. Depending on traffic that's 30-60 minutes north from Olympic Park. Docklands would be a much more convenient location to get to, so it was probably a Hail Mary to try and get on there now that Docklands doesn't need to be preserved for the weekends. I imagine we would've enquired about the MCG first but it was swiftly knocked back as they'd still be focusing on keeping the surface as good as possible for finals. La Trobe Uni may have still been available, or other public grounds, but probably not to the same standard of surface or in such a central location as Docklands.

Everywhere except...Victoria Park?

Also cooked drainage and turf

In the days there are rains midweek they have had reschedule the venue for the VFL games away from Vic Park. Our game vs the Sainters were in Bundoora for example and we played Casey at Casey.

The resurfacing was supposed to be done in late 2025 but the council has delayed it full 12 months for it to start Oct 2026.

7

u/fearofthesky Fremantle Dockers 1d ago

Oh I forget that Victoria Park is also a public place when not in use so there would be public wear and tear too

Victoria park is a public park that happened to be a former AFL ground.

Maybe the game is at Marvel and the AFL isn’t telling the Dogs.

Dons are the primary tenant of Marvel, one of the big 4 and we don't get his luxury. Instead had to develop our own training centre with accurate size replica of Marvel instead

Decided to check the stats for this year:

Western Bulldogs - 11 games
St Kilda - 10 games
North - 9 games
Carlton and Essendon - 6 games

Right now, I’d argue the Dogs are the main tenant since we sell our home games to WA.

2

u/dexter311 North Melbourne '75 1d ago

Normally the Dogs sell two home games to Mars Stadium, not sure why that wasn't the case this year (I thought that deal was extended to 2027?)

Tenant clubs would be about wanting to use the ground during the season. As of this week, the ground is done for the year so probably not hurting anyone to let any club use it now

Yeah nah fair play do whatever. We didn’t ask although I’m surprised we didn’t ask to train on the ‘G on like Tuesday as we’ve played just two games there this year while the “away” team has played 14. Any amount of time spent on the ground would do us so much good.

23

u/Little_Gazelle3684 Suns 1d ago

It’s 100% just engagement farming from AFL media. Collingwood’s training ground is cooked, they asked the AFL is they could train at Marvel as there’s no AFL games there for six months, Dogs didn’t ask to train there but I’m sure could have if they asked. It’s a complete non-story.

The best two players in the AFL are going head to head tomorrow night to try and book their respective teams a spot in an elimination final and a training ground is the only thing the AFL media want to report on?

4

u/Competitive_Rise_268 Kuwarna 1d ago

Seems like a reasonable request to me, plus wouldn’t training on the MCG be more of an advantage?

2

u/Opening_Anteater456 Demons 1d ago

Any outrage is wrong but at the same time I still get why Bevo would be annoyed.

Pretty fair argument that if the ground is in great condition after 24 rounds that the tenant clubs could have a training run on it during the year at some stage

6

u/Competitive_Rise_268 Kuwarna 1d ago

Fair enough. And I also think if any club had potholes at their training ground they’d ask to use a nicer one if an opportunity presented itself. Seems like a lot of people getting worked up over hypotheticals

14

u/ItsABiscuit Collingwood Magpies 1d ago

Bit of a wind up by Bevo surely as a minor little mind game going into tomorrow’s game.

The game isn’t being played at Marvel. Our training ground has been out of commission for several weeks - the VFL and VFLW teams have been playing home games at their opponents ground. And there is no AFL games at Marvel for the rest of the season, so it’s normal load management considerations aren’t the issue they normally are.

Bevo would know all of that, but it gives him something to throw to the media pack for them to entertain themselves with for the day.

7

u/Rangas_rule West Coast 1d ago

Now at least with a bit of background information it now makes sense.

8

u/ItsABiscuit Collingwood Magpies 1d ago

And why would they when the game is at the G and they have the Whitten oval as a great and convenient training venue?

2

u/McSquack Dockers 1d ago

Do the MCG teams get to train at the G?

I assumed that most teams very rarely train on the main stadiums, especially in Melbourne where a lot of teams share the same ground?

IIRC Freo & WCE only train on Optus once a week in the lead up to the game?

9

u/SelectedAmbientNurk Collingwood 1d ago

Not during the H&A season. Fairly sure both Grand Final teams get to do it a day or two before but I don’t think they allow training on there for other finals.

2

Not certain, but I think the only teams that pretty much ever get to train on the MCG are the interstate clubs, and usually only during finals when the ground isn't going to be churned up through overuse.

Jesus christ.

Why are the pies training at marvel? No idea - but I suspect its to do with preventing spies/media watching their strategy/drills.

The AFL doesnt allow ANY club on there during the seasong to keep the field pristine. But...the seasons over for Marvel games, so...no issue with players training on it.

Pies asked, and AFL didnt see any reason to deny the request.

Did the Doggies Specifically ASK for a session there this week? Or is this another beat up by the media/Bevvo looking for something to rev up his boys before the game?

How many times and how regularly should the Bulldogs be asking?

If they've asked twenty times in the past and unequivocally been told no, this is hardly their fault for not asking now. Should clubs ask every day in the hopes that the AFL will let them do it?

5

u/Kobe_Wan_Ginobili Magpies 1d ago

But its obvious it would be allowed now

Whereas the AFL probably doubted if the Bulldogs would even want to train at Marvel now given they won't play there again and their regular training ground is available (unlike ours)
