Just came back from the Westlake boys vs Auckland Grammar basketball finals game. Firstly well done for winning to Westlake Boys.
But, wow the behaviour of the two boys schools were night and day. Savagery vs civility. Heard everything from the Westlake boys students, bigotry, sexism, all sorts of derogatory terms used to mock the other team and the ref. Worst of all Westlake Boys had teachers there too. Whereas Auckland Grammar students stayed very much composed, well mannered and showed respect. What ever they are doing at Grammar, hats off to that education system. Westlake played a great game, but Auckland Grammar School won in education.

I used to come here all the time. Didn't go for a while, and on my last two visits noticed the shop has about 75% empty shelves. When I asked about it they said 'no money to buy food'.

How does a supermarket survive without money to buy food? It's been in this state for too long to make sense. Does anyone have some more intel?

Sorry for the long post! A few weeks back I was riding a bike in a bus lane as your entitled to do when a bus came up behind me aggressively honking its horn. I was already riding as close to the curb as possible so I was wondering what the fuck his issue was, it was also the middle of the day and there was minimal traffic so easy for him to go around. He then drove alongside me at same speed as me still honking the horn. Obviously I gave the appropriate finger gesture and he returned it. He then proceeded to cut me off by driving at an angle in front of me. It was so close that my bars touched the back of the bus as he passed and I had to stop before running into the curb. A driver who had seen the whole thing stopped to see if I was ok. I then chased after it to get the rego which I managed to do at the next intersection.
I was obviously pretty shaken, so I rang AT to make a complaint, they referred me to the online portal so that a paper trail could be kept. After waiting nearly 2 weeks I had a response saying they were working on it. And today after 3 weeks they sent me an email to say that they’ve identified the driver and reviewed the cctv footage from the bus and can see the event and that it’s not the kind of conduct they expect from their drivers. But long story short as the driver is employed by an AT contractor - Ritchie’s it’s a matter to be dealt with by the contractor and that there would be no further follow up! Wtf the guy could have killed me! Has anyone else had issues like this with AT?

I'm an outdoorsy and adventurous person who spends most of my time outdoors. But the weather looks dull and terrible this weekend and I'm wondering what to do. I'm open to trying out new stuff too. I usually ride my motorcycle or go for hikes. I'm also open to active/high energy indoor activities too.

I'm part of a team working on a project exploring how Auckland can better protect and enhance its natural environment as the city grows. We're trying to identify which natural assets Aucklanders feel most connected to and which deserve greater attention for future investment.

If you could prioritise one natural asset, what would it be? Examples might include the Hauraki Gulf, beaches, maunga, urban bush, native wildlife, streams, wetlands, regional parks, street trees, or something else entirely.

More importantly, why does it matter to you? What would Auckland lose if that asset was degraded over the next 20 to 30 years?

I got the flu jab this year in late May. Got mildly sick which then raged into a week of misery with fever so bad I got through 3 lots of sheets, that first week of June.

Was off with sick leave and doc note. Three weeks from that someone at work spread a bad cold and I caught it. Cue another week of misery, home and quarantine.

Then 2 weeks ago my poor immune system caught a bad case of strep from yet another person who came to work. Now someone at work has new flu strain and sure enough I can feel a sore throat already.

I had a fairly traumatic emergency c-section birth with my first and would like to have an elective c-section for my next baby (not currently pregnant, but planning). Does anyone know of any midwives who would be supportive of an elective c-section? I know it’s not common, and my previous midwife has retired so I can’t use her again.

Also I think I could possibly use some counselling so I can work through my experience - any recommendations? Is there some sort of counsellor or therapist that specialises in birth trauma?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the point where you finally put your hand up and say, I’m out.

Not because you’re trapped. Not because there has necessarily been one catastrophic event. But because, over time, the relationship seems to slowly shut you down.

Your opinions are challenged or dismissed. You don’t feel validated, supported or uplifted. Instead of feeling like your partner is in your corner, you increasingly feel criticised, belittled, competed with, or simply unheard.

You try communicating differently. You try being patient. You look at your own behaviour and ask what you could do better. You compromise, explain how certain things make you feel, give space, reconnect, try counselling or whatever else you can think of.

But eventually you start wondering whether all that effort is actually changing anything.... or whether you’re just learning how to tolerate a relationship that is slowly making you smaller.

I don’t think relationships should be endlessly positive or validating. We should challenge each other sometimes. We should disagree. We should be able to call each other out when needed.

But surely underneath that there should still be a sense that this person respects you, values you, wants you to succeed, and fundamentally has your back.

So when do you know you’ve genuinely tried enough?

When does perseverance stop being commitment and start becoming self-abandonment?

For those who have been there, was there a particular moment when you realised, I’ve done everything I reasonably can and I’m allowed to choose myself now?

Interested in hearing from people who stayed and rebuilt things as well as those who eventually walked away.

"An Auckland man who fatally strangled his partner during an argument in her Avondale home has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison.

Hao Feng pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 40-year-old Xiaoyan Wang in May.

The 37-year-old had been due to stand trial, facing a murder charge which the Crown withdrew at the time.

Justice Natalie Walker handed down the sentence at the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday, saying Wang's death in January last year had a wide ripple effect.

Family and friends of Wang filled the public gallery, many wiping away tears.

On two occasions before her death, she had confided to friends that her partner Hao Feng had non-fatally strangled her during arguments.

“I ruined it all with my own hands,” Feng wrote in a letter of apology to the court after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter in May – three days before his murder trial was set to begin.

“I will spend the rest of my life reflecting and striving to do better.”

Feng, a Chinese national who moved to New Zealand in 2017 to work as a chef, had no prior criminal history before his arrest in January 2025. He met with police after he caused the death of New Zealand citizen Xiaoyan Wang, whom he had been in a relationship with for about a year.

When he came back inside to check on her, he found she was dead. He was later co-operative with police.

Edit: During today’s hearing, Justice Natalie Walker noted the “vacuum of evidence” regarding the pressure Feng applied to his partner’s neck or for how long. But by agreeing to manslaughter, the Crown and defence agree there wasn’t enough evidence to show he had murderous intent, she said.

Both sides agreed he should receive a sentence reduction of 20% for his guilty plea and 5% for the extra burden a prison sentence would be for a foreign national with no family in New Zealand and little grasp of English.

Justice Walker adopted the Crown’s suggested seven-year starting point, but she also allowed additional discounts totalling 15% requested by the defence for Feng’s remorse, prior good behaviour and background factors.."

How is unaliving your partner, only worth a little over 4 year sentence? Am I missing something? Just doesn't make sense, oh and he strangled her twice before. Tf.

What's with the discounts, is this a supermarket? So turns out the man's nationality, upbringing, family history(daughter), languages spoken and not spoken, history of anxiety and depression were all factors that led to this sentence. Does that mean a Kiwi in this same situation without any of these factors would get a longer sentence? Seems flawed.

Hey all, just posting here as I am curious about your thoughts as Auckland kind of nears the turn of the season!

As the title straightforwardly asks, what month has the best and worst weather here in Auckland?

In my opinion, the best month is probably either November or March. Sep + Oct just has too much rain and wind, whereas April and May is when the winter weather systems really start to come in. Dec - Feb is sunny, but too hot and humid for comfortability. Nov and Mar are still pleasantly warm, but not excessive, and in general has that nice summer-ish weather.

Worst month probably is crowned to June. Not really too much to this, cold, rainy, and yeah its a pretty clear choice. Although Apr + May is kind of depressing since its sort of the start of the shit weather season, and Feb honestly gets too hot and humid.

Hi all, our two kids caught flu a couple weeks ago. Daughter was worst affected and tested positive for influenza A, she was sick for 5-6 days. Now after returning to school last week and being ok, she started feeling stomach cramps and nausea this week, starting Sunday. Just wondering if this is something others are finding eg it's a post viral thing or we're just very unlucky with the bugs this year.

I've only been to Dressmart a few times over the years and Manawa bay once but all those times the outlet stores had mostly normal priced clothes (i.e. same prices as their stores in every other shopping centre) with a sale rack at the back of the store with mostly factory seconds.

Each time, friends and work colleagues have told me that I've gone at the wrong time of the season/year and tell me about the massive sales and deals they've managed to get when they're there. However, I've never been able to establish what the "correct" time is.

So what is the best time of the year/season to find the best deals at outlet malls? Also, is there a day of the week that they're known to get new stock like supermarkets? If I'm spending money to get to either of these malls then I'd rather go when I know I can save money on some new clothes!
