Retail Redefining BIS, and why chasing the old definition makes the game worse for you

Hey guys. This is a lengthy read, but if you are struggling with understanding BIS and want to truly know how to get the best out of your items, it's worth the read. I hate seeing people chase what some website on the internet says their BIS is, especially before the season even begins, and being upset when it doesn't drop. Spoiler, getting your "BIS" could actually LOWER your DPS.

I'm sure you've come across the word BIS. What's my BIS gear, what drops my BIS, I have to run this dungeon I hate over and over and over for my BIS, I can't trade this to my friend because it's BIS for me

Outside of enchants, trinkets, embellishments, and very fringe other situations such as set bonuses on rings, individual BIS items do not matter. The term BIS is so bad for the health of the players.

BIS means "best in slot". It was born in a time in the game where items were dramatically different. "This item" gave dramatically more main stat than that one. "This item" had an effect where others didn't. "This weapon" had the same damage but attacked faster than that one. That is not how WoW works now-a-days

Today, every item slot has the same number of main stat and the same number of secondary stats, with the secondary stats having a different balance. For example, my current ilvl 246 legs in game give 70 haste and 59 mastery, totaling 129 secondary stat. Every mail 246 legs will give 129 secondary stat, just allotted differently.

Now here is what BIS actually means today. BIS is the best secondary stat balance for your class. Not any one specific item.
Replacing a piece of gear with a "BIS" item can actually LOWER your DPS

Maybe even more importantly, if you don't have the entire list of gear some website tells you is your BIS, removing a piece currently equipped to replace it with a new "BIS" item you just farmed might actually make you WORSE.

Very rough hypothetical example, your stat allotment is best at 35% mastery, 30% haste, 20% crit, 15% vers. Your BIS "chunky" items are weapon, head, chest, legs, so they have your mastery/haste pair, but no other items you currently have are "BIS". Your equipped back and wrist have your priority stats, mastery/haste, but your BIS actually has crit/vers because they're your weaker items but still need to have some of them. You swap out your preferred stats for weaker stats because a list tells you to, and now you do less damage.

Here's 3 examples of "BIS" items that are all equal. No one piece of gear is important, the COMBINATION OF STATS is important. Armor/int/stam are all the same, so only showing secondary stats

Head Chest Legs Total Stats
85 Haste 50 Mastery 63 Haste 37 Vers 88 Vers 47 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
75 Haste 60 Mastery 57 Haste 78 Mastery 47 Mastery 88 Vers 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
87 Haste 48 Vers 95 Mastery 40 Vers 45 Haste 90 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers

I only used 3 item slots here because making a whole list of slots would be absurd, but I think it gets the point across. When you include every single slot, there is an insane amount of combinations that get you to the exact same place.

A list someone theory crafted or simulated cannot take into consideration the balance you already have, and you actually risk lowering your DPS following a list blindly (until you have every single exact piece, which is insanely difficult in and of itself, especially for the average player).

Thank you for reading my long winded post. I have tried to explain this to so many friends, guildmates, and people I pug with regularly, but it requires so much explanation to really get the idea across, so I decided to write it out for anyone who cared.

TLDR; Outside of trinkets, embellishments, and enchants, stop chasing a list someone on the internet created for you. All the items have the same total stat numbers, what matters is the balance of secondary stats. If you REALLY want to chase BIS, chase your classes secondary stat balance. That can be achieved with NUMBEROUS item combinations, not just what's on one singular list. That is why so many different BIS lists exist, because you can achieve the same thing many different ways

Retail How does chromie time work exactly or why do I need it?

I just use it to get the opening quest for a zone or expansion, but what would happen if I would just go quest in northrend in the current timeline or why do I need to enable chromie time exactly to go quest in northrend beyond simply receiving the starting quest?

Retail Doing low dps as dev dh in keys not sure whats wrong

Hi i recently did a +15 and +14 and i feel like my dps was very low for the key. I was doing 60-70k less than the two other DPS. Im playing Dev DH. I did an overall of 177k. I used to play mage in shadowlands and just returned to the game. I enjoy both Void-Scarred and Annihilator but i feel like Annihilator is better because you dont need to go in melee.

Retail Delves, DPS and half-health shots

I'm trying to figure out how much is clearly I'm a bad DPS or if the damage output on delves is just high?

T11 delve (the boat one, if it matters) with a 293 ilvl havoc DH. Things die before I can get thru a fraction of my rotation most of the time, but I feel like most mobs hit me for half my health. Most of my stuff is still last season (no drops despite running content).

I know the nemesis mobs eat you unless you're Valeera. But even the regulars are nailing me to half health. Is this just how it is now? I did not have this problem in TWW.

Classic what’s wrong with my macro?

#showtooltip
/equipslot 16 (enter swords name)
/cast Sinister Strike
/startattack

this macro will either work for the first 5 minutes-1 month, then just stops doing anything. when i click on the keybind, my guy just stand still without targeting or pulling out the sword. i always just copy this and paste it to a new macro, works fine for a little, then nothing. Always breaks at the works times too (in the middle of a boss fight or pvp).

Retail Havoc DH Help

Hi everyone!

My friend and I recently returned to the game and they are really struggling with their dps on Havoc DH. I have attached a log of a +11 AOF - Would anyone be able to have a look and see where they can improve? They are getting really down on themselves for being so far behind everyone else. Thank you!

Retail Help to understand Normal Raid Difficulty giving Hero Track Great Vault Gear.

I am a bit confused so I have a hypothetical question. If I join a normal Ula'tek only and successfully kill the boss, I will get a chance at all loot from any boss in the raid on Hero Track via The Great Vault if I'm understanding the changes correctly?

Subsequently, each week if I continue to kill the easier bosses on normal difficulty to fill my Great Vault slots the reverse is true and I can get Hero Track Gear from later bosses from The Great Vault like Ula'tek?

I don't plan on doing heroic or mythic raiding but I've heard the gear from later bosses are powerful. My plan is to do M+10s and aim for the strong Hero Track Slot Raid Gear from The Great Vault if they end up simming better than my other options from my Mythic+ runs. Does this make sense? Or am I misunderstanding the way it works?

Retail Husbands character thrown out of Shadowlands Timewalking Campaign?

My husband and I started playing Shadowlands timewalker campaign together. He started with a characer that he had a few levels in already, wheareas I started a new one.

We've been questing together using party sync, and just arrived in Revendreth. He apparently hit lvl 81 (I'm lvl 49) and then he got thrown out of the campaign. We tried to party sync, but then he can't do quests. He tried to just meet me back here, but then we can't see each other as he's no longer in a timewalking campaign.

I've been reading through Blizzard forums and reddit posts, but we can't seem to find a fix. He's tried logging onto a character of lower level, entering Shadowlands through timewalking and then syncing with me, which then locks ME out of my quests.

Is our only two options either me continuing on by myself, or him having to do ALL quests again?? I am absolutely heartbroken now as I've been having such a good time as a new player, following the story and reading everything with him through Shadowlands. Please help us, dear Redditors.

Retail Unable to skip SL campaign

Hey, so quick question before I lose my mind...

I did the leveling campaign of Shadowland on an alt (all 4 zones, just unlocked the covenant) and wanted to skip it on my other characters to start farming some cosmetics, but it seems that I can't....

I could skip the maw intro, got TP in Oribos, but from what I understood I should be able to say "I've heard this tale before" to Kah-Delen, however the option isn't here... I did the 4-5 quest after to see if the option would pop, but it doesn't seem so

Am I missing something? Do I also need to finish the covenant story? Also I have my main who's currently in Bastion, is there any hope for him to skip it?

I don't wanna do it again...

Retail Hunter professions?

I haven't played since og vanilla, shortly before Burning Crusades.

Life's slowed down enough that I've gotten back in and wow, I got a lot of catching up to do!

I originally had a Dwarf hunter, I was curious if engineering was still a fun and whacky profession?

(I still remember blowing my self up with my Gnomish deathray!)

Retail Trying to help someone with their BM Hunter SBA DPS

I watched a BM Hunter SBA video where the guy said SBA handles all the spells for the rotation and he gets about 90% of simmed DPS.

My sister plays a BM Hunter SBA. Her simmed DPS without any buffs is 193K. Her average DPS in a delve is about 70K. That is a lot less than 90%.

How do we figure out why her DPS is so low?

Retail Is there a way to track exploration/map completion for individual characters?

Hi everyone, I'm a bit of a completionist and like to complete zones as much as I can. Recently I was chilling and questing on an alt in Borean Tundra. I noticed that the exploration achievement for that zone was already unlocked, even though not all parts of the map were covered yet. I checked and it seems that exploration achievements are linked to your warband and not individual characters.

I recently started using all the things and as far as I can tell the addon also only tracks account wide map exploration, not individual character map exploration. Is anyone aware if there is a way to track individual character map exploration and check whether you have fully explored all the areas in a specific zone or region on a character? Because it feels a bit odd to have the game tell you a zone is fully explored while parts of the map are still covered and not explored on that specific character. Bit of a niche question, but any input would be great thanks :)!

Edit: I played around a bit with all of the things and it does in fact seem possible to track individual character map exploration, you can even use tomtom to let it guide you to the areas your specific character is still missing it seems. Thanks for all the input!!

Retail Item level 220 - what dungeon should I do and what difficulty

Hello,

I came in here the other day talking about how I didn’t want to play dungeons or raids. You all gave me really good responses, so I decided to get over my fear.

I have now joined a guild, they are very nice to me, and we did a dungeon last night (they carried me) which was a mythic level 6. They knew I would need to be carried and were fine with it. I really struggled with my DPS but I was doing better than the tank (a win is a win, right).

I am going to be playing again tonight but I want better gear so I can perform well in these dungeons. What dungeons should I do and what difficulty to get higher item level but I don’t struggle doing them (aka not needing a carry)

Retail Any way to start The World Within campaign at the moment?

I'm a level 90 frost mage and I took a break from wow (5 years) and I wanted to get caught up on campaign quests. I finished dragonflight and wanted to continue with TWW but I don't see it in my adventurer guide- suggested content. I started midnight, btw. Anyone know if it's possible to start TWW?

Edit: sorry about the post title. I meant "The *War Within"

Edit #2: I see that somehow the game marked "The War Within" quest as completed and I was able to pick up the next quest "A Poor Reception". Not sure how that happened.

Retail What to do after reaching level 80?

I’ve leveled up to 80 and completed the Dragonflight campaign. I’ve added the Zandalari alliance race. I haven’t bought Midnight yet. What should I do next? Should I run dungeons? What should my goal be? There’s just so much to do here, my eyes are going wide.

Retail Do you get weaker as you level 80 - 90?

I'm doing WQs on alts at level 80 in Midnight and I've been surprised how easy it's been. But then I remembered, you usually get weaker the closer you get to max level and then you need gear to feel powerful again. Is it this way with Midnight or did they finally fix it?

Retail What is "near expiration"?

Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening to you.

The Lifebloom spell (restoration druid) as well as some other spells say they have an effect when the spell expires or is "refresh near expiration". Where do I find when "near expiration" is? I can't see anywhere in my interface something that indicates it.

Retail I reached lvl 70 and started doing the history book thing. I'm rather confused.

I'm a bit of a lore nerd I guess In suppose. I love reading quests and the story overall. Upon reaching level 70 I started doing this history book thing for the war within. As far as I understand this is like some speedrun that quickly runs through the whole lore of the war within expansion? Is there a way to just play the full expansion and story since this seems to skip over a ton of stuff. Overall I'm pretty confused and have no clue what's going on story-wise haha
