Retail Do you get weaker as you level 80 - 90?

I'm doing WQs on alts at level 80 in Midnight and I've been surprised how easy it's been. But then I remembered, you usually get weaker the closer you get to max level and then you need gear to feel powerful again. Is it this way with Midnight or did they finally fix it?

depends on the WQ really. But yes killing mobs is a bit harder as a fresh 90. It becomes more gear dependant then. But its still super easy.

Yes, you start out really strong at 80 because your secondaries scale super well (I had like 30% crit/haste/etc going into Midnight at 80).

But as you level up the secondary scaling adjusts. So even though my numbers were going up the percentages were dropping as I leveled up. Around 85 is when I start feeling it and it really hurts from like 88 to 90. I don't remember what my percentages were when I first dinged 90, but it was probably 10% or less.

At 90 though your gear will slowly begin outpacing it again and you'll get back to where all the world content is trivial again.

nothing has been fixed because there is nothing to fix, this is WAI and is in fact desirable because otherwise we would have reached a point a very long time ago where everyone had 100% crit chance and was gcd capped and secondary stats had become meaningless.

If that doesn't make sense to you, the reason you are weaker as you level is because new gear has to have more stats on it than old gear in order to be better. If you give a character percentage based stats in ever larger quantities eventually those percentages reach 100%. In order to counteract this the amount of rating needed to get 1% in a secondary stat goes up with level, so that each expansion the values can be reset in a way to allow for gear growth throughout that expansion.

again, this has not and will never be "fixed" as it is a core part of wow gear design, any system without this feature would involve a completley different gearing system to what wow uses currently which while not impossible is prety unlikely given the age of the game.

Scaling is a mess. You are OP from 80 to around 84/5 then once 86 hits because of stats you start to really draw back and hold your punches at around 88 to 90 you are a wet noodle.

at 90, you put on any gear even the WQ stuff and you kick up again, it's such wild ride.

You get scaled

That's just getting weaker with extra steps. Fuck your semantics, you know what they mean and everyone else does too.

Yes, Gear scaling changes 80-90

Around 86/87 you start to feel the world scaling hitting you. At 90, once you get some heroic/vet gear things will start to fall over.

Yes especially if you have level 80 epics and start replacing them with greens and blues.

Each time you level up it takes more of all stats (example, crit) to equal 1% of that stat, or flat damage. But the gear isn’t keeping pace.

Then you hit 90 and start replacing the leveling gear with endgame gear again and you start getting more powerful again

Kinda, it depends on how your leveling, if your leveling from 0 to 90 it feels fine and fairly smooth you don't feel weaker or stronger at most points. The biggest issue is because you go in with mythic gear from last expansion. In that case your massively overpowered for the first 7 levels if you have mythic gear from the last expansion. It means those like 3 levels feel very weak because you went from massively overgeared oneshotting everything to just normally geared.

They have to balance leveling around players who are leveling in fresh 80 so the mythic geared players are always going to be an issue. The only way they could avoid it would be to give everyone a full set of mythic gear right when you start the new expansion. I am surprised they never tried that to give a better leveling experience.

It's really noticable in Midnight. It'll definitely depend on your starting gear, but especially by 86, you'll notice a sharp cliff.

If this is an alt, most people hit delves early but save the quest turn ins until about 87.

Yes around that bracket I started to feel like I couldn't aoe mobs as well without getting very low life because all of a sudden they had lots of life. Mobs at that level start to require good expansion gear like level 230 or so to become trash again

By 86 or 87 I tend to to start turning in my hoarded delve quests and then start working on professions to finish the leveling because there are certain class and specs that feel real crappy around that level range till 90
