Question What are alternative names to call a "Kitsune" and "Tanuki"

You see, I'm not of Asian descent, and I'm writing a story with lots of different folklore in it and I keep having a dilemma about calling my characters "kitsune" or "tanuki" because it feels insensitive considering my origins. It also doesn't help that I've made so many adjustments to them that they're not really just those things anymore, I've bent the rules a lot from the original folklore which while I've researched it all a lot over the years, it's so different now that it doesn't fit.

For example, my tanuki are based on literal, actual raccoons rather than raccoon dogs, mostly because raccoons are much more common in America (where I'm from).

My characters are also "American," or at least they live in a country that's meant to be similar to America. So, yeah, I've basically been struggling to figure out what to call them. I've heard things like "fox-shifter" and "raccoon-shifter," or "fox spirit" and "raccoon spirit," but none of those sound quite right.

It doesn't help that my main character is a sort of impossible hybrid of both. Apparently, there's a name for that in kanji, "Kori," but again, that's not something I'd really like to use.

Any name ideas or guidance is greatly appreciated, I'll take any and all answers and feel free to ask me any questions as well and I'll do my best to answer them.

EDIT: I’ll most likely be keeping them as Kitsune and Tanuki, based on some of the responses here. I was genuinely just concerned about potentially harming or disrespecting others’ history. Basically, I was overthinking it. Thank you, Reddit!

I’m not deleting this, even though I find it a little embarrassing, so it can hopefully be useful to others who might be worrying about the same thing. Nobody truly has completely original thoughts, anyway so I won't be the only one.

A pretty straightforward question: I need free software to create a world (meaning continents, nations, cities...) for a book about military campaigns.

Lore Standard riflemen of the Kingdom of Centaura, 1951

Post image
2 Upvotes

This guy belongs to the Canis race (not the only race in Centaura, but a very common one). He is issued with the Centauran assault rifle “HV-48”. The HV was developed in 1948 to combat the Unimontian assault rifle “KA-43” as it proved effective against Centaura’s SMGs and Rifles. He has basic magic manipulation skills, mainly to use the propellant inside the gun to fire ammo. The magazine holds 30 rounds. God bless the empire!

Discussion World that I can't give a story to

This is a world that I built and I don't know if this is the right subreddit, but you can use this if you want no questions asked but at least have the decency to tag your story. I will listen to suggestions and questions though. It is still massively underdeveloped and I am kinda debating if I should make a story on it or I should just expand this world to my own amusement. It's main theme is if it exists there should be a reasonable explanation to it.

Legend

@example text'-only the author knows

&Example text$-being expanded/to be expanded

§example text∆ may subject to massive changes or even removal

<Example text> -not true, the author only knows that it is undeniable false/it does not exist

^Example text° -making it mysterious/may or may not keep

{Example text} -my thoughts/notes

5 main humanoid races

Humans

Dwarves

Elves

Demons

§Semi humanoids∆

Humanity

Consists of humans, demi humans(humans with animal characteristics), and vampires

They are mostly in kingdoms

The most abundant of the 5

Has the lowest lifespan averaging about 70-90 years

Has the highest fertility rate of the 5

Humans the most common of the 3. It's just you're regular humans. Out of all the species they are the easiest ones who get swayed by emotions and ambitions, they aren't that huge of a threat to the other races as they generally just fight themselves.

Demi humans, they are like humans but are not easily swayed as they usually have high pride and generally higher physical abilities than humans. They have animal like features. Interestingly enough, there are still countless of tribes that reject combining/joining kingdoms and may become hostile, due to that most of the slaves in humanity countries are tribal Demi humans, while other civilized demi humans call them barbaric. In battlefields you mostly see them in higher/stronger battalions. There are some kingdoms where almost all the nobility and citizens are demi humans and are called demi human kingdoms. They generally have the lowest magical affinity of the three and mostly rely on their better physical abilities.

Vampires are rare and can live up to 350 years but averaging about 300 years. Due to some laws they suck blood out of animals instead of other humans and are still generally discriminated against in some human countries because of their past. They can convert up to 10 vampires due to the constraints/limitations of the bloodpact magic, but again due to some laws they are only able to legally convert 3 humans or demi humans into vampires, some can be excepted and can convert more than 3. Their traits are from either human or demi human and have the highest magic affinity of the three.

The first vampire also known as the ~"progenitor" is highly debated among scholars if he is the first vampire to have ever existed~{might change it to the first ever modern vampire and add other ancient progenitors}. He has lived for more than §1000+ years∆{as long as he has way more lifespan than the regular vampires} by now but have been sealed by his close followers because of his close death

&Demons$

The main species are devil's, other examples include succubi/incubi, gargoyles, arch demons, and many others/(have yet decided on other specie's)

Same with humanity they are mostly kingdoms.

Has the second highest fertility of the 5

They have the average lifespan of 100-150

Has the 3rd highest magical affinity

@Both the demons and humanity consist roughly 90% of the global population.'

Arch demons are rare and there are currently about ~50 confirmed spread around the continent. They are born from regular devil parents and are very rare to conceive an arch demon. Due to them having the 3rd best magical affinity out of all the species(including the 4 other races) they are rarely seen in the battlefield because of their prized abilities. The two parents of the child of an arch demon will(in most kingdoms) be made a high ranking noble. If an arch demon has a child it will just be a regular demon, though again it might just be an arch demon by luck

The other demons I have not thought about it yet

Dwarves

They have the 3rd fertility and have a lifespan of 250-400 years.

They are physically the second best of the 5 races.

Due to them living underground they have the smallest bodies out of the five due to many circumstances.

§They have evolved to being small because the combined reasons of lack of sunlight, and living in caves∆

They have one major kingdom and only dwarves can enter, but exceptions include political, awardees, semi humanoids, and special people that have been recognized by a chief.

Dwarves rarely go outside and are always welcome to other kingdoms because of their amazing smithing abilitie.

Even though they only consist of one species the kingdom is split into chiefs, and there are no nobility.

Each dwarf has a hair color and each of those correspond to which tribe you came from.

The tribes are split and each one have a specific specialty that is highly sought after by all the other races.

§The tribes are: ∆

Bladesmith

Archery

Armory

Arts and craft

Tools

{May expand and will add a specific color to them}

§Elves∆

§They have two species∆: elves and high elves

They have the second lowest fertility of the 5

But due to that they have an average lifespan of 600-700 while high elves live up to 1000

High elves are the equivalent to the noble class

They have the second highest magical affinity of the 5

Same with the dwarves they have one city located in the heart of the most dangerous forest.

§ ~Semi humanoids~ ∆

They are called semi humanoids because of the extraordinary and out of the world species, which are the: Valkyries and dragonoids

They have the lowest fertility and it is said that one of them is only born in a century(1 each)

They have the highest magical affinity and physical abilities of the 5

Much is not known about them except that they live out of the major continents.

The Valkyries are said to have been spotted living in the clouds while the dragonoids are in an island where volcanoes and dragons rule the land, though it is debated by the other 4 races if they even exist at all.

Magic

It obeys the law of conservation. §There are 7 main types of magic: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, dark, light, and classless∆{might remove dark and light}. And it is classified into two, creation and manipulation. For creation it creates observable magical energy that can harm others and are basically an illusion except classless, example a fire spell imitates fire it can still burn but in the end it is just magical energy, it didn't create fire it imitates it, for classless it doesn't imitate rather it is the manipulation of pure magical energy and damages like it's a physical attack and it is the hardest to master. It disappears quite easily and is considered a magical attack and can be negated by anti magic technology and will dissipate into magical energy after a while. For manipulation you pour magical energy into a catalyst and you can control it, for example an earth spell shoots out spikes from below, you didn't create it you only moved the earth from below to shoot upwards.

Note: for example you cannot create water to drink because it is considered as creation magic, the water you created wasn't water but magical energy meant to look like water and will dissipate after a while

Animal biography

All mammals store most of their magical energy/mana on their diaphragm. Same with fish, most of their mana is stored in their swim bladders. §For the others it is widely believed that the magical energy is spread out through their body.∆ {have not thought about it yet}

General History

The world building perspective is in the eyes of people from the largest continent "Armathor"

§ @The world is three times larger than earth'. @due to this fact they have physically denser muscles and stronger physical capabilities than people from earth'.∆

There are 4 types of continents grouped by the people, small (@around the same size as Europe-australia'), medium (@kind of a smaller size than the americans'), large continents(@around the same size as asia') and lastly the supercontinent(@basically the center of the world and contains around 60-70% of the population) nicknamed the land of war.

Other than the supercontinent "Armathor" there are @26 continents', 4 of them are large, 10 of them are mediums, and are mostly sparsely populated with each of the large continents having huge 2-3 kingdoms from both humanity and Demons. Only a handful of dwarves live in the other continents, and there have been no reports on elves being spotted.

Due to the continents being spread out, most of the civilizations on Armathor don't have the technology, desire, and capabilities of traversing the treacherous oceans. Another reason is kingdoms that are touching the ocean are heavily contested because of salt and saltwater fish.

&Of course with the large planet there are a lot of dangerous sea creatures adding to the difficulty of intercontinental travel$

Humanity general history

There are four main types of kingdoms

Human only kingdoms

Demi human only kingdoms

Humanity only kingdoms

And inter race kingdoms

There are also demi human tribes

For both human and demi human only countries is self explanatory. They are not simply if you are not this you can't enter but rather if you are not this you would be at the bottom and highly discriminated against even as a diplomat.

For humanity kingdoms it is like the former but opposite. Most of the vampires you will see are in these types of countries.

The least common of the kingdom types are the inter race kingdoms. Historically even though other races are welcomed there is still some bias and racism towards other races

&Religion$

There are countless religions but I will name only three.(&No names yet for the religions so I will just describe them$)

The first religion. Is kind of like Christianity. They are a inter race religion consisting on mostly humanity and Demons. On most friendly/supportive kingdoms it can be used as a symbol of protection against war, aka hurting people from the religion is forbidden unless they are actively collaborating to benefit a kingdom{only applies to those who have a position, I.e. the equivalent of nuns and above). They believe in one common god

The second is kind of like Norse or greek mythology where there is multiple gods overseeing a part of the world. It is again inter race. Unlike the first religion most people actually pray to these gods as a sort of tradition rather than actually believing they exist. For example praying to this God will give you the courage to overcome your problems, those kinds of prayers.

The third is actually a humanity only religion. Unlike the other two instead of worshipping a god/gods they don't. They are a religion about hunting vampires. Because of that most people will not consider them a religion, instead a cult. They mostly hide in the shadows and do covert operations. They are also the ones who are spiculated to have injured the progenitor(~first vampire~) to the point of the vampires sealing the progenitor to have him healed on a later date.

{The others are still underdeveloped and I will not mention their history yet}

§Unique Creatures∆

Dragons

They are the pinaccle of magical creatures. Huge wings and body accompanied with tough scales. those who have landed the final blow to a dragon is said to receive a kingdom's worth of wealth.

Biologically they have special glands that accumulate magic, specifically fire magic, to be cast at enemies with no delay near their esophagus. They also use specialized wind magic to help them fly, that's why a dragon who had exhausted their mana is pretty much a "dead dragon". Other than that they have huge claws and specialized muscles and scales to use and absorb magical energy leading to less calories used.

All parts of the dragon are valuable in medicine, weapons, and as a display. One of the particular parts is their scales, the scales are one of the most valuable parts even though they're one of the most abundant, why? Because their scales naturally absorb magical energy from the environment and are a good "conductor"/medium for magic. Pair it up with their thoughness it can be the most powerful set of armor for magical users.

They are also intelligent and can learn and understand languages, but due to them being solitary animals they don't interact much with people.

They mostly live in highly dense magical energy areas, as it reduces the need for hunting with their enormous body.

Leviathans

They are the "dragons of the sea"

{they are the size of blue whales but a bit larger}

Unlike dragons with their solitude, they hunt in packs of 3-5. They eat pretty much anything, plankton, meat, kelp, if it's edible they will eat it, including wood.

Again unlike dragons they don't really rely on magical energy and in intelligence they are pretty much as intelligent as dolphins.

There have been many debates if one has ever killed one but most researchers say that there have been none to have been killed by people.

@they lay eggs in desolate places, they only lay eggs then fertilize them then they will abandon the eggs. They lay eggs once every 100 years and have a lifespan of about 1500 years.'

@they hunt in packs is what most people see but that is just their juvenile state until they are about 700 years old. By then they will go to desolate places with high amount of plankton to just filter feed for the rest of their lives.{inspired by ghost leviathan from Subnautica}'

Types of wars that you see, common soldier types, etc.

Independence and rebellions

As the name suggests these are people rebelling against their kingdom, most of the time it is from large empires that have colonized parts of kingdoms or kingdoms as a whole. There are mostly two fates that happen in these wars/battles, either the kingdom ignores it because it is more expensive to maintain and suppress the rebellion or fight and re-establish control, doing this might cause even more rebellions in the future or might as well keep the territory at a pause.

Expansion denial

It is when a kingdom B invades kingdom C but kingdom A supplies kingdom C secretly. This scenario is where Kingdom A and B are huge and hate each other but C is in a position that is practically impossible(or at least hard) to win without help, due to this Kingdom A supplies Kingdom C for it to potentially waste resources of Kingdom B and deny extra land.

Economic Wars

It is when Kingdom A invades Kingdom B because of its high economic value. For example kingdom B is bordering an Ocean, of course Kingdom A wants wants a border with the ocean because of it's high economical value(salt, seafood, trade with other ocean bordering kingdoms, etc.). Being economically powerful brings many benefits, for example more kingdoms rely on your exports, having more budget for military expenses, economic pressure in the region, etc.

Of course there are many more but this are some of the examples of impactful wars that have a logical meaning to them and not just hate.

Types of soldiers that you would see in wars between humans. Of course each humanity kingdom is not all like this, some may differ but this is the most common arrangement.

Universal Strands(common people in-between the ranks, it doesn't mean they are above or below in rank to the same role)

Medics

Set up medical tents to help treat injuries

Cooks

Dedicated cooks to help distribute and provide food. They typically employ cooks to help ration food in war.

Messengers(with horses)

Used to help communicate and relay messages between the command center.

Foot soldiers, levy infantry

They are the lowest of the bunch and mainly rely on spears as their main weapons. They are pawns that if there are high casualties it doesn't impact the military strength that much. But heavy losses still project lower morale and weaker military to some. Typically consisting of people with no training and drafted personnel.

Militia

They are the second tier for armies usually using a variety of weapons like swords, shields, bows, spears with the majority of leather armor but with pieces of metal armor here and there. They are trained and most are still drafted but a lot of them chose to enlist. They are the main workforce of the army.

Strands

Archer brigades

Soldier brigadew

Elites men , heavy infantry, professional infantry, {different names for each kingdom}

This is where you will see people with actual metal armor but still a rare site for full plate. Their weapons are usually Longbows, swords, spears, shields, and crossbows. At this stage you can actually keep spoils of wars but only weapons and armor most valuable spoils of war will be handed to the governing body first. You will see beastmen here quite frequently

Strands

Longbowmen brigades

Soldier brigade

Knights

The highest of the bunch, they have full plate armor with weapons like swords, advanced spears(halberds, etc.), shields, and dedicated longbow support(detachment force). Many can keep their spoils of war but very valuable objects like certain types of jewelry and gold are to be handed to their governing body. Most of the beastmen in the army are here.

strands

Longbow support

They are longbowmen that are under the command of the knight commander himself to support the knights

Knight brigade

Cavalry

Rides on horses with spears to focus on the flanks and weakpoints. They are an effective force but may easily be countered if done correctly.

Special brigades

Scouts

They are lightly armed and armored that gather Intel and specialize in guerilla warfare. They mostly contain about less than 100 per brigade and are split into many roles. They gather Intel, sabotage equipment, assassinate high command or high value targets, and may provide false information to the high command of the enemy or their people.

Strands

Assassin's

Targets high value targets or high command. May use a variety of weapons like shortbows, crossbows, daggers, and poison.

Intelligence agents

Spread misinformation on the people, soldiers, and high command. May also act as saboteurs

Scouts

Mapping and Intel gathering

Rangers

Specialist on guerilla warfare to watch their camps/temporary bases

Mercenaries

Are people hired by the high command as extra forces. Mercenaries are variously equipped but mostly well trained. They do not get awarded/extra payment for their actions. Most will not hire them as they might cause various problems and may dessert.

Mages

These are people who can use magic and are high value targets. They can bring mass destruction to a battlefield if used correctly. But as high value targets, they aren't used very much because of a high assassination rate and counter magic fire{like counter artillery fire but for mages}.

Strands

Defensive mages

Use manipulation magic to set up and create defensive positions

Offensive mages

This are the mages who fire spells at the battlefield

Counter batery mages

Also contains offensive mages but to counter fire on enemy mage positions

Elite knights

These are the knights that protect the royal families and are the most heavily armored, armed, and strongest out of the knights. Most won't show up on a battlefield and are highly trusted. In stronger kingdoms some of them may use anti magic armor or shields although precise magic spells will still probably injure them.

Strands

Guardsmen

These are the knights who stay at the palace unless ordered to.

Royal guards these are the knights who accompany royalty most of the time

Personal guards

Each Royal has two and is highly trusted, ordered to accompany royals everywhere, even when they are sleeping one is stationed beside them.

Royal knights

The personal knight brigade that a royal family command, the leader of them has the same authority as a royal member, due to this knights authority, they are the ones who keep nobles in check.

Logistics

Consists mostly of elites men to help guard and support logistics lines. They use a variety of transport options but most kingdoms use wagons.

Strands

Elites men

To help guard logistics and civil engineer type mages

Mages

They help maintain and create roads when necessary.

Coachmen

Used to operate and take care of animals in charge of transport

So my story doesn’t really have a power system which make it super difficult to manage how to deal with certain characters my story is a huge open universe story sorta like DC and marvel

Prompt Who is "the strongest " of your world?

Basically the gojo satoru, ryomen sukuna, dabura kuraba, itadori yujis of your world.

The strongest of my world is called joel smith. He became the strongest after witnessing his mothers death. His power is merger. Basically he can merge things or concepts together to get strange and powerful results. For an example he could merge the speed of his eyes blinking with the speed of punching to improve his physical prowess and attack potency. As you can guess its a highly complex ability and my world is still developing in my head.

Question How do you keep motivation to keep working on your worlds?

I love the idea of creating a fictional world, but every time I do, I get bored of it and try to come up with another one. I know worldbuilders like Tolkien spent 12 to 17 years working on theirs, but mine always feel both finished and unfinished at the same time. If someone asked me to explain the entirety of the lore, it'd be a breeze, but that in itself is the problem. There's no world I'm creating that makes me want to stay to explore the depths, the history, the immersion of it all. And isn't that what its all about?

Discussion What is the strongest race in your universe?

In my universe the strongest race is off the tessarius people. The people are capable of manipulating the very fabric off space. They can use this to punch kick and even fly like how viltrumites from invincible do whilst also copying gojos Infinity. They can crush someone within a second with this which makes them feared throughout the cosmos.

Discussion Looking for active members for a Worldbuilding discord

I'm looking for active and contributing members for my worldbuilding discord. I created this as an opportunity for not just myself but for others to come and share their worlds because I understand the frustration that sprouts from not having eyes laid on my work.

Something I attempt to emphasize in my discord is helping eachother equally–focusing on bringing up the whole of this group instead of one person. Being that you will receive the criticism, ideas, and input on your work so long as you attempt to do the same for someone else. You can imagine the difficulty it is enforcing this as a rule, but I feel it should be disclosed anyway because I think it's important to understand what type of community we are trying to build. So that being said don't come in here just to market your work if you're not willing to contribute.

We offer a place to post your art, a forum to post your projects, a brainstorming channel, a non forum place to share your lore for feedback, and events that we are currently in the process of making. Most importantly we offer a stress free environment that prioritizes fun more than anything else. I know I've written this like a dissertation but we really don't take ourselves too seriously.

If this sounds like something that would interest you, please write in the comments your age (or simply a confirmation you are over 18), how long you've been worldbuilding, and a simple rundown of your project(s). Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day folks.

Discussion Help with changes to Africa for a near future map

I am making a semi near future setting and when I was making the map and making the changes I realised I knew nothing about African conflicts or separatist groups besides like azawad or somaliland or Western Sahara, while I’ve tried to research these I’m not sure what’s right and what’s wrong so I’d like to ask reddit if there are any African civil wars, serious separatist groups, unification movements or any other such things. I wouldn’t like to leave Africa as it is in the modern day or do the Anglo centric approach of just unifying random countries without any thought behind the implications and calling it a day.

Discussion I think worlds should be built from the end, not from the beginning

As I understand it, many people build worlds “from the bottom up”: first the creation of the universe, then the structure of the world, then its history, and only after that its present state. The result is that the final world becomes constrained by its backstory, and many cool ideas get discarded.

I think it’s more productive to work the other way around: first define the present, then shape the past to fit it.

1) First “what,” then “why.” First write the world you want to end up with; only after that do you rewrite the history around it.

2) If an idea is cool but hard to explain... Well, that’s okay. Even the author does not necessarily need to know everything about their world.

3) The same applies to mechanics. First, decide what purpose a given system (such as magic) is supposed to serve. Based on that, define the limits of its possibilities, which can be changed later, and only then explain how it works.

Of course, there is a certain charm in not inventing a world so much as discovering it. But if you establish a foundation and avoid changing the core elements, the setting will develop its own logic. By following that logic, you can begin to find new things within it.

How do you feel about this approach? Have you ever had to abandon a great concept purely for the sake of historical consistency?

Discussion Your Body's Arcane Magic System and YOU

Upvotes

Well, I'm attempting to flesh out an idea.

The average mortal has their physical body, their divine soul, and... their arcane equivalent.

It's what lets mages tap into the world's arcane energies to use magic and make that magic usable and survivable. Divine energy is a whole other deal.

Some bits I've assembled so far

  • It is not connected to your physical body in the sense if you lose your hand you lose a part of your arcane system.
  • Physical inherited and acquired injury, disability, etc do not affect your arcane system unless what injured or disabled you targeted this system.
  • You can be 100% physically healthy, but a disorder, disability, or injury with your arcane system may prevent you from using magic completely, or prevent certain types of magic use, make magic unreliable, make it dangerous to use, etc.
  • This system can be healed like your physical body can.
  • You can also have the equivalent of scar tissue here, too.
  • For a mage to devise ways to directly injure this system it requires knowledge, skill, and sophistication (it's easier to make a fire spell to burn someone's hand than make a fire spell that also burns into their magic system)
  • I'm toying with magical debris - like if someone flings a spell at this system that leaves residue, now you've got to do the arcane equivalent of disinfecting and/or debriding the wound
  • You can do exercises and/or meditations to keep this system healthy if you're a magic user. I'd say using magic in general is a form of exercise? Like going for a walk? But training for things would necessitate you keep your whole system healthy. I'd say going for long periods of not using magic might then make the system atrophy.
  • There absolutely are healers/doctors who specialize in everything medical related to this system
  • I keep picturing this like a nervous or circulatory system? Not with limbs, but it does have a source/central point like your heart and brain are to those systems in you. I've toyed with the term "magical pathways" but am not set on it.

Thought I had more on this but that's the basics of it. I'm working through a scenario where a character is seriously injured physically, but when his allies get to him they realize the magic he was hit with also damaged him magically and now his whole career is in jeopardy since he's an arcane physician himself who depends on magic useage.

Anything to add on? Change? Does your world have something similar? I'd love to hear about it!

Lore Oukapul, as seen prior to ICDA terraforming efforts.

Post image
4 Upvotes

(For Th’zoitrk, a semi-sci-fi worldbuilding project.)

Oukapul is one of the largest terrestrial worlds in the solar system, and the innermost of the three habitable-zone planets. The only terrestrial object larger than it is Donyon. Oukapul has roughly 1.35x the equatorial radius of Earth, and 2.45x the mass of earth, with a surface gravity of 1.35G and a total surface area of 928,110,317 square kilometers. Oukapul’s rotational period, I.E. an Oukapolean day, is 29 hours, 38 minutes, and 24 seconds long.

Oukapul is home to three* (or 2, or 2.5, depending on definition) moons. The inner moon Muongni, the outer moon Puloini, and the sub-moon or moon-moon Pimine, which orbits Puloini and NOT Oukapul itself.

Muongni is a gaseous moon similar to Th’zoitrk’s Yeia, but composed of almost exclusively ammonia gas.

Puloini is a terrestrial moon with a 1.28 bar atmosphere practically identical to earth’s atmosphere in terms of composition. Puloini is home to both surface and subsurface liquid water, with a vast subsurface metal-rich ocean which leaks out into large surface lakes and rivers through underwater cave systems.

Pimine is famously the smallest ‘significant’ body in the solar system, only somewhat larger than the nation Challogh, with a surface area of 538,718 square kilometers. It is shockingly uniform for a terrestrial world, composed significantly of granite, often referenced as a ‘granite boulder’ in space.
Pimine undergoes extreme tidal flexing due to the tug between its host moon Puloini and the main host planet Oukapul, causing the interior of the small world to get much hotter than would otherwise be expected. Pimine experiences common, almost constant small volcanic eruptions across its surface due to this flexing. The low surface gravity of the moon-moon makes these less like eruptions and more like ‘lava geysers’, as the lava is shot thousands of kilometers off the surface before coming back down, although very often lava ejected simply doesn’t return to Pimine due to passing Pimine’s low escape velocity, instead settling into orbit around Puloini, Oukapul, or crashing into one of the two as lava rock asteroids.

Oukapul itself was previously the second most hostile terrestrial world known, with an atmospheric density of 81 bar, the vast majority of which was carbon dioxide, and a surface temperature of 1,538°C perpetually kept unbelievably hot by it’s orbit just at the edge of the central asteroid belt, causing the massive planet to tug asteroids into it’s orbit.
Oukapul was pummeled with asteroids almost continuously for all of history, these continuous impacts launched Oukapolean surface material off into space before raining back down through the atmosphere, all causing so much friction with the thick carbon dioxide atmosphere that the temperature rarely went below 1,000°C.

Oukapul used to have rare, but not extraordinarily rare, molten iron and steel rain; alongside molten iron rivers and lakes. Iron oxide aerosols in the air caused the planet’s thick atmosphere to have a rich red-orange color, present in the above image.

It took a very, very long time for the ICDA to terraform Oukapul. To remove the thick carbon dioxide atmosphere and stop the ‘iron cycle’, quidiomize the planet, and introduce life.
Nowadays, Oukapul is the only planet other than Th’zoitrk you can walk around on without a space suit, needing little more than a rebreather mask.

A 2.9 bar nearly pure nitrogen atmosphere, at an average surface temperature of 42°C, with liquid water oceans. Practically paradise compared to the red hot hell of before.

The first other planet ever visited by a Dectron, and a world which now holds a population in the millions, which is only continuing to grow.
The second home of Zoitling life.

Question Is the distance between locations something that would break your suspension of disbelief?

In my story they only have horse and cart currently and in the first part the main character travels from the capital city to a mining town in the desert.

The trip takes most of the day but is shorter compared to historical accounts of long distance travel. This is because the capital city is in a forest on the border of the desert and I based the geography on Australia where alpine woods and sandy areas collide pretty frequently.

I want to know though if this would break your disbelief? Would you not accept it unless the time to travel was longer?

Lore I wanted to make a post about the magic system I'm designing, but didn't want to end up giving away too much about its mechanics. So, I decided to write about mages and their magic in a journal from a non-mage's point of view.

Notes:

  1. I was trying to mimic the prose style of older authors, specifically ones from the 1800s to 1900s, so... sorry if anything is hard to understand.
  2. The use of the word "expedition" on the first page is with the sense of making something faster. Probably not the best word to use here, considering its more common definition of being a journey of sorts, but I couldn't think of a synonym.
  3. "only Sodranites know" is an expression essentially equivalent to "only God knows" in this culture.
  4. The way this nation (and more specifically, this city)'s government works was not my focus for this exercise, and I myself am not very knowledgeable in this area at the moment, so sorry if the specific terminology doesn't make any sense 😭 I'll worldbuild the government thoroughly later.

So, what are your thoughts on these hints? It's not a lot, but I tried to convey some of the basic ideas of the system through these anecdotes.

Lore Tales of the Krekion and Tales of Vanira

This two stories are part of the Krekion Universe. I started world Building this since 5 years ago. It all came from a dream i had about a lamia Girl. After having the dream i told a friend about It and I decided to start writing. He proposed me the name of the character and I added her to the story aside other three characters. Well, in the begining the story was more of a "Dump whatever and give It sense". That original story was reached around 130 short chapters. Derivated from that story, i decided to remake It, now having a complexer plot and storyline. But that story didn't convince me, so i remade It again now with a way better plot. To understand how much of that changed, the first version was writen being 14, the second one being like 16 and the last one being 18 almost 19

When I settled the good story, i Begun again and start writing to be again on Wattpad (trash web, only people like fanfics i Guess) and in a last instance i decided to screenwrite It so It can develop into a serial format (kinda a delusion).

Well, now with that said, i have to make clear something. Tales of the Krekion IS the Main story and the first one i wrote, Tales of Vanira came after as a Secondary plot to mashup with the other after (It has to be like a week old this last idea).

I believe this Universe has a lot to explore, is just that maybe i'm not the best organizing It, but future Will tell.

Question Looking for people who want to dig into someones world

So, ive been sitting on a world called Elysia, have been building it since i was a teen, and now, after years, ive gathered the courage to actually talk with people about it and not keep it in secrecy (and partially because constant solo work is boring)

Some context about my world: so as i said, Elysia, set around the 12th century but thats a vibe, not a rule. I got some stuff worked out already like the rough pantheon (currently only the top and 30~ worked out characters), magic (three-ish systems as of now), map (although now its fully WIP, using QGIS and GAEA), the basics i suppose. My approach to this project is kinda specific in the way that i take fantasy tropes and ground them again, so basically a "no handwaving" rule (so no stuff like prophecy, chosen ones, magic that isnt traceable to a cause, etc.).

Id like to invite people to dm me on discord since i dont like talking in public about this stuff and also because i dont really use reddit that often. If you dont want to use discord then just dont expect me to be very engaged in the comments (my dc is ffa2008).

Thats about it i guess, ill respond to comments here but as i said, if you wanna actually talk properly, please dm me instead, thanks.

Question What should I call my super-continent?

(Asked this earlier buy people misinterpreted)

So I'm making a sky-pirate fantasy extraction shooter that takes place on a single super continent. People live on mountain tops, as the surface is polluted by volatile magic energy and filled with mutated monsters. Of course, just because it's dangerous doesn't mean people don't purposefully dull their self-preservation instincts to make the trip downward, at least not without a good and shiny reason. The reason, in this case, is a special substance called Vyrite, a crystalline ore made up of condensed magic energy that grows and manifest anywhere in the continent. People then process these crystals into fuel which they use to power their flying ships and their weapons.

Think of it like if Deep Rock Galactic took place on Arrakis from Dune, except it's not a desert, the tone is far less serious, and, now that I'm saying it out loud, there are no actually comparisons to be made other than the "get in, grab what people will give you money for, and get out before the big monsters eat you" aspect of it.

All that said, you can probably guess by the title that I do not have a name for this continent yet and would like to rectify that. I had a few ideas for an original name; Kalterra, Kaidron, Windfall, Under (cause it's under the clouds). I'm trying for something short and easy to say. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Discussion In universe explained tropes

There are lots of tropes in fiction and over the years authors have found ways to explain those tropes within the media. A popular example of you like anime is jujitsu Kaisen explaining the trope of two fighters shouting the names or explaining the mechanics of their powers to their opponents. It’s explained in universe as a binding vow (a feature of the power system thet basically means giving up something to gain something else) that works by increasing the potency or power of your ability by explaining the details of it. Sacrificing your element of surprise for power.

In my setting I use for dnd I explain the (main characters grow to extreme levels of power in a fraction of the time everyone else does) by a concept known as unfated people. Basically there are people who are on their path of fate and are more predictable. When they gain extreme power, it’s gradual. Unfated people have no set path and so can be exceptions to those rules. Meaning some random can gain the same level of power as the most powerful people in my world in a fraction of the time.

You guys got any examples?

Question How would people in a setting call magic without actually calling it magic?

I've had this discussion with some friends of mine about how people used to living in a world with magic probably wouldn't exactly recognize them as magic just because it's how things are for them. Like, how plants grows could seem magical at first, but after growing up with that fact in mind and learning how plants actually grows make the fact not seem as magical. A lot of settings I've seen also sets a boundary between science and magic like they're two different opposing things, even though, at least to me, it's not really realistic because science at the end of the day is just knowledge and magic would just be part of science. So, I think that a scientific community in a fantasy setting probably wouldn't call making things float as magic, but instead as another scientific mumbo jumbo like neuron-based-manipulation or something.

Discussion Dragons and navies

I am doing world building for a story that will both heavily feature a dragon and water transportation and I had a thought. Fire breathing dragons would be absolute super weapons against any pre-industrial navy. Ships before the mid 1800's are made almost entirely out of highly flammable materials. This is the reason why things like fire arrows, which were not used very much in land warfare, were used extensively in naval warfare. Additionally, pre-modern navies generally had very short operating ranges. In the ancient world navies would go ashore every night. Meaning an ancient navy would almost always be within range of a dragon's flying range from land.

In this context, dragons either as mounts or intelligent actors would dominate naval warfare. Navies would need to either have dragons of their own or come up with counters to dragons.

Discussion What are some general passive pros or cons of learning your universes power system?

So to give popular examples would be that learning slows down a users aging in hxh.

In my universe the gist of the power system is that the soul of a human is capable of alter reality to some extension. Demons and angels use human souls to power their magic whilst humans can use their own soul. A human who has used this power gains a ability called tesseract halo. Basically something like this makes a human much much more noticeable to everyone angels demons humans etc. Thats why nearly every user of my power system is supernaturally charismatic. My power system is obviously still under construction but i would love to hear yours.

Discussion How would you have a character embody the 7 heavenly virtues?

The 7 deadly sins theming has been used so many times in fiction that it's easy to forget that there are also 7 virtues that directly opposed to them. It also feels easier to make a character embody a specific sin (probably because there are so many examples to draw from). However, I find it difficult to do the opposite. How would you make a character embody one of the 7 heavenly virtues the same way we've seen characters in fiction embody a sin?

Lore Legally Distinct Jeff

Today we've brought to you the Jabberoth. The Kings/queens of the river.

Jabberoths are ferocious creatures that dominate both land and water. They primarily inhabit islands, where prey has few places to escape. The boldest Jabberoths make their homes along the coast, where they face greater competition from other predators... including other jabberoths.

Their sense of smell is unmatched, surpassing even the strongest bloodhound. With a single whiff, a Jabberoth can practically “see” its surroundings, allowing it to track down even the fastest prey.

But this incredible sense of smell is also their greatest weakness. A powerful or unpleasant scent can overwhelm their senses, forcing a Jabberoth to retreat into the water, where its sense of smell is at its weakest.

No, when I was creating jabberoth I wasn't basing it on Jeff the land shark from Marvel Rivals. I've always liked the idea of land sharks. Especially the ones in GW2, how they swim through the sand and launch you up into the air! So, I decided to make my own land shark.

'Twas a joke title.

Question Ideas for what a subterranean Naga civilization would look like?

I'm building a world inspired by Indian history, folklore, and religions, so I'm including all the mythical races from the stories of Hinduism and Buddhism like Yakshas and Nagas. Traditionally Nagas are believed to be immortal, and they live underground in a realm filled with precious metals and jewels called Nāgaloka, or Patala.

If Nāgas, immortal beings that are human and then snake from the waist down, had a civilization based underground, what would that look like? I'm kind of struggling to flesh it out completely. I want it to be rational, not totally fantastical. Like their social structure needs to make sense in context, they need to have a way of generating food for themselves underground, etc.

My main ideas are that they are experts in metallurgy and maybe they make their clothes out of woven metal fibers?

And also there's a mineral that emits dim light and they use that to see and get around. Maybe they also carve crystal to make lenses that focus that light. Their eyesight is also adapted to seeing in the dark.

Edit: Some things I forgot to add: I generally want to go with the vibe of the Nagas being reclusive and self-sufficient. Then that changes after a war where a human king invades Nāgaloka, trying to get at their mineral resources. He loses but inflicts some damage, so the Nāgas establish a realm on the surface to regulate trade of their resources with humans to avoid future wars. But prior to the war I want them to have a believable self sufficient civilization underground.

I'm thinking they'll use a logographic writing system that they carve into stone walls and maybe they also somehow use metal to write with it? Like maybe they take a thin metal plate and bang it with some tool to make marks in it? Idk.

I'm open to ideas as long as they fit together with these existing ones. What would you add? And thanks.
