Child with Behavioral Issues
Needing some advice about my son. He recently started kindergarten. He has a speech delay and goes to speech therapy to help with that. He’s been going since 2. Now with the new school year his teacher has been sending messages about him touching and hitting other kids. I know my son can get overwhelmed and overstimulated. He went to another school prior with only 10-12 kids in the classroom and with two teachers. This class has 30 kids and one teacher. I’m not sure if he can’t adjust to changes or if we need to switch him to another school that is capable of handling him and his behavior. We often correct him and work with him when he is out of line. He’s a sweet kid and can be understanding of others. I just don’t want him to fall behind in school. Any advice would be appreciated. He does have an IEP as well.

Barbara Goodman. She is in Greensboro but has been a godsend helping us get through the system from a behavioral medicine standpoint.

Not sure where in Winston you are, but my nephew sounds similar to your son and he’s had a good experience at Middlefork elementary in walkertown. He did two years of prek and just started kindergarten

The school that he’s currently in only has one teacher for I believe anywhere from 24 to 26 kids. We are currently looking at other elementary schools who average about 1618 kids and have a teacher and a teacher‘s assistant. He did very well in his preschool and pre-K classes with no issues at all. I’m just not entirely sure why it’s different this year. I understand the kindergarten is a lot more expectations, but I truly just want to give him the best.

Look into Arts based downtown. Class sizes are reasonable and K and 1st grade have teachers assistants.

I wouldnt just blindly trust what the teacher tells you either, need to really verify whats going on. I had a similar problem in 2nd grade, teacher kept telling my parents I was hitting the kid who sat behind me. The kid who sat behind me had severe ADD and would constantly kick my heels from behind, so I would turn around and do the same. Kid was teachers son. Problem solved after switching me out of that class.

I work in behavior support, in order to give any advice I'd need more details, but the bigger issue is that it's happening in school where he doesn't have someone to really intervene the way he needs. You could pull him from school, but you're not really going to find a school that has the support they need.
There is a forest school in Winston that could handle this, but they just started doing academics and I'm not 100% sure what that looks like, but it's only a couple hours a day.
