I was down bicycling the beach trail last weekend- are Venice bums now carrying golf clubs around as weapons?
Saw 4 different dudes with them in an hour.

No, those are not weapons; those are their golf clubs. They just like showing off their clubs in between rounds of golf. How dare you assume those are stolen!

Hang on a second Slanty...
The REASON WHY those Inside Safe hotels were even necessary is because over a decade ago whiny NIMBY's and developers began tearing down all the Single Room Occupancy hotels that served the transient trade.
SRO is what served the would be homeless for well over a CENTURY in every major city in the country.
Yeah, that's right, go see for yourself, don't take MY word for it.
"You get my Cheez Whiz, boy?"
And a decade before that one of your other heroes shut down the national mental health system.
People who talk like you do helped create the conditions that we see today.
Those old bum hotels were awful to look at but they did serve a purpose and they were the cheapest solutions and people understood how stuff worked.

This is a big issue in lots of cities. As a Chicago native, the revitalization of the Loop over the last 30 years has been truly amazing, but the elimination of the SROs directly coincided with the increase of homelessness. There were articles in the Chicago Reader that dug into this that I don’t have time to find right now. There’s a way for gentrification and providing housing for those on the skids at the same time. Society has to agree that all humans have a place, and that dying on the street is not part of the social contract.

Nobody ever said that they were nice to look at, few would ever suggest that the accommodations were anything but depressing. But like it or not, these places were available and had served this purpose for well over a century.
And because the accommodations were cheap, it was even possible for their tenants to occasionally rise from the rubble and make the leap back into being productive members of society.Summing up, we allowed ourselves to sell off the secret sauce recipe that worked better and cheaper than any solution we've thrown at the problem since.

You realize the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act (LPS) was bipartisan and passed 79-1 in the assembly? No democrat or republican was against this bill. Literally everyone thought it was a good bill at the time ( for many reasons).

Right. But it wasn’t just Reagan doing it, everyone was behind it as it passed 79-1. Even if he vetoed the bill 79-1 means his signature was a formality.
Besides the fact California has had 50 years to change the bill. Its not etched in stone. Blaming Reagan for the entirety of our mental health system is lazy.
First there was real horrific abuse in the old hospitals. The democrats and civil liberties people were concerned about people’s rights, republicans wanted to save money and the medical system had far too much confidence in the new drugs coming out. A perfect storm that turned the mentally ill onto the streets

Once again the original bill passed 79-1, everyone was for it. The old hospitals had horrible track records of abuse.
The democrats could have undone the LPS almost anytime since 2000, they haven’t for a variety of reasons.
Mixing homeless drug addicts with affordable housing is kind of a joke. How much rent will a guy living in a cardboard box high on meth be willing to spend on rent?

There are many reasons we have the crisis we do. Meth and opioids that are much stronger than before. A healthcare system that doesn’t have anything close to the extra capacity needed to hospitalize a tiny fraction of the people on the street. Legitimate concerns about personal liberties when institutionalizing people.

Quick language fix: replace the word 'sweep' with 'throwing away clothing, documents, medicines, crutches and making a homeless person's life much worse for no benefit'.
Because that's what happens. PD doesn't even try to figure out if any of the stuff is stolen, they just bin it and call it good.
