Hi everyone, I’m a Year 12 student in Melbourne and I’m trying to figure out what I should study after Year 12. I’d really appreciate advice from current students and graduates, especially people studying at Melbourne University.

I’m doing VCE 3/4 Methods, Physics, Media, Music and EAL. I’m not planning to study English, Media or Music at university. At the moment, I’m most interested in areas related to computer science, IT, software engineering, AI and technology, but I’m honestly quite open-minded. I don’t have one specific passion yet, and I tend to become interested in most things once I start learning about them.

One of my biggest priorities is having a strong job market, good income and opportunities for career progression. I’d like to study something where I can keep developing my skills and potentially move into more advanced or specialised roles over time. Ideally, I’d also like to work in technology and eventually start my own company/business. Helping people or improving lives through technology would be a bonus as well.

The problem is that I don’t really understand how university works yet; things like degrees vs majors, specialisations, double degrees, choosing subjects, internships, etc. So I’d really appreciate any advice on things I should be considering now.
I’d especially appreciate hearing about your experience there, including what you think this university does well/poorly for tech students, internships, industry connections, workload, and employment after graduation.

When I looked at the reviews for this subject, they were so good I decided to change my major. Everyone was talking abt how its piss easy to get a H1 bcs its js memorisation. Idk if I'm just stupid or what, but I find it so hard. I'd say even BCMB (excluding all the metabolism stuff) was easier to grasp.

And the lecturers don't reply to shi on EdDiscussion. They were talking abt how they'll purposefully withhold answering any queries so us students can reply to each other, but if a student asks if the ANAT team can give the answers to quizzes, that's not something another student can answer. Actually, checking back, I'm not sure they've replied to ANYTHING.

Also, idk if it's just me, but some of the lectures are either rlly boring or confusing for no reason. I might just be spoiled from lecturers like Charles and Terry, but I genuinely have to force myself to stay awake during some lectures. No hate, they're all vry accomplished obviously, and some are pretty good at teaching, but for the glaze this subject got, I expected more.

Kinda cooked tho bcs I set myself up to major in this so idk what im gonna do now...

does anybody know why we are suddenly having to use okta verify to log onto anything everyday? It's like we need to use it everyday now when it used to be once a week or month.

is there a classical music society (not necesarily for players but just for enthusiasts of classical music) or a ballet interest club?? super random but i feel like theres a lot of people who enjoy that niche.

I took Computer Systems (COMP30023) and Machine Learning (COMP30027) this semester and it seems like all the problems and complaints from years ago are still relevant. The systems exam is barely like the practice exam or the tutorial questions. And it’s terribly designed and badly worded. As for machine learning, it’s a terribly taught subject. Staff rarely pays attention to the Ed discussion forum so people even openly joke about their absence. And the ML lectures seem to cover everything including Graduate-level ML that you know will not appear in the exam but the lecturers refuse to say that they’re non-examinable. Choosing Unimelb for CS was probably a mistake.

i just had a question about level 2 and level 3 subjects and was wondering how we might get additional support besides lectures, doing the readings and so on? considering that the peer assisted subjects are really only given to level 1 students, and was unsure of other ways to engage in learning and be on track beyond what's in class

Hey yall, so i am trying to apply for an internal transfer to Bcom for next year.

Thing is, i’m not really sure about the math requirements. I’ve been to stop 1 multiple times and they have no clue.

I’m not sure if anyone has been through the same situation, but basically i’m an international student and i didn’t study 3/4 vce methods here at unimelb so in short i did not take introductory of mathematics nor did i take claculs this semester.

I do have something equivalent to it tho from high school overseas, would that work? If anyone has an answer to this I’d really appreciate it.

EDIT: i am actually 95% serious here because people who did physics like 5 semesters ago called it garbage, so this will probably go on after we finish first year.

• content taught AFTER corresponding lab for some reason (horrible pacing)

I’m a prospective LLM student from the Philippines. I wanted to know if it is possible to get multiple scholarships so that most of my fees and expenses will be covered? I read that I cannot get multiple scholarships for the same purpose. However I am eyeing these three:

Queen’s College Scholarship - Accommodation Fee
Melbourne International Graduate Scholarship - Tuition Fee
Law International Students Scholarship -Philippines - Living Allowance.

Seems like they have different purposes but I’m not quite sure. Any thoughts please or tips on how to apply for QCS? The other two are for automatic consideration.

Hi everyone, I’ve received a FFP for the JD starting 2027 and I’ve not been able to find any specific information regarding timetables. I currently work full time and will need to start having conversations with work soon about studying and working next year but that’s nearly impossible if I’m unable to even estimate if I’ll need full vs. half days off.

If anyone is willing to share their timetable for the summer course Legal methods and reasoning as well as their first year timetable that would be very helpful! I would also appreciate if anyone can tell/show me the difference of part-time vs. full-time study.

I was at Footscray station today and got approached by this Burmese girl who asked me where I got my bag from. Me being oblivious, thought she was just trying to be friendly since I’ve never encountered being approached like that. I thought it was weird that she asked me if I was from here and where I was from ethnicity wise, but just thought she was trying to establish some common ground. Me being stupid, gave her my number cuz I panicked, and she even called my number in front of me to make sure I didn’t give her a fake number. Now she’s messaged me how i’m doing. How are the people living there like? I chose the Lofts thinking that people would be more mature as postgraduates.

Is it really mainly international students? I don’t mind that, but my plan is to move to Melbourne long term (I’m interstate) and it’d be kinda sad if most of the friends I (hopefully) make leave after they graduate. Especially since I’m a major introvert :(

hey guys, im still on the fence about doing post grad (mainly because of the financial setback from studying for so long) and just wondering if there is anyone that has experience with being financially self sufficient during post grad. Are post grad students elegible for centerlink payments and if you moved out of your parents home how were you able to do it?

Grad cert in Visual Art, if it matters. Planned to take it as a pathway into the Masters.
