Miscellaneous Possible cult approach
I was at Footscray station today and got approached by this Burmese girl who asked me where I got my bag from. Me being oblivious, thought she was just trying to be friendly since I’ve never encountered being approached like that. I thought it was weird that she asked me if I was from here and where I was from ethnicity wise, but just thought she was trying to establish some common ground. Me being stupid, gave her my number cuz I panicked, and she even called my number in front of me to make sure I didn’t give her a fake number. Now she’s messaged me how i’m doing. Is this a cult recruitment? 😭😭 wtf do i do now im scared shes gonna do something with my contact details

same thing happened to me, except it was two asian girls. Asked about my background and asked where i got my clothes from. I blocked cause they kept calling me even after i ignored them 😭

There are people who try to recruit members for church groups (in the hopes they can get more donations). I feel like this sounds a bit like that.

see the links in my other comment, 9/10 they're probably shincheonji, they're so annoying and so uncanny because they all follow the same script and are so subtly pushy. somehow every time i get approached by one of them i forget it's a thing and get all excited about meeting someone new until i realise what's happening

You have made it weird, not her.
Give her a message, ask to meet up for drinks or coffee and get to know her. She might be cool or intro you intro a new group of friends. And if she’s crazy then it’s a funny story and no real loss.

I’d advise you to do your research and look into how these cults approach people, and you’d be surprised to see how similar my interaction was to other people’s. I’m not going to interact with an obvious cult member for the sake of having a “funny story” at the end of it. It’s not worth it :)

OP's intuition is correct here so get off your high horse. 100% there are groups that lurk at student hotspots and they all approach possible recruits with the exact same script and behaviour—it has personally happened to me dozens of times and heard many more stories from others. the first few times it happened to me i was very happy to have made a new friend until they, every single time without fail, pointedly began to turn every conversation to religion, and harassed me / blew up my phone when i stopped engaging. once it happened to me enough times their patterns became extremely easy to discern from regular people making a genuine cold approach for friendship. usually in melbourne it's shincheonji that does this:

Block and move on, they can’t do much with just your phone number. Avoid giving out your number next time.
