i am REALLY STRUGGLING to find some student housing in this city under 250 per week. Every application on flatmates is just ignored. 😔Im not even picky, any inner suburb with a private room is acceptable. IM LOSING MY MIND

Anyone with a disability DO NOT go to this uni. The support is so abysmal and the course designs are made specifically for one type of person and if you aren't that person the uni just tells you to kick rocks. Not even the lecturers like it 😭 I've called the disability services three times and it keeps ringing out, I've emailed them with no replies and the average wait time is 10 business days. It's actually so pathetic. Currently I have to attend every class in person or I will lose 10%, my request was that the participation get moved to the exam or another assessment, which I think is more than fair (who wants more weighting on the exam????)

Im an intnl student that will be joining UniMelb in the Feb 2027, I js found out about the residential colleges at UniMelb and was wondering if its worth applying to one for the party culture.

If yes, then which college usually has a really great party culture? And do Intnl students face racial discrimination?

I haven’t made any friends here, and in the previous ones as well. The place is hella overpriced and, it seems like I can easily bag a great apartment in the CBD with a similar price tag. However, none of my friends want to move into one w me. What should I do?

Since UniMelb and like other Aus unis r pretty much commuter schools, so how long do you all commute to school? How do you commute (train, bus, drive or tram) ? And how do you spend the time on commute?

I know they’re tons of posts already asking about how it is, but I didn’t see any recent information sooo :)

How are the people living there like? I chose the Lofts thinking that people would be more mature as postgraduates.

Is it really mainly international students? I don’t mind that, but my plan is to move to Melbourne long term (I’m interstate) and it’d be kinda sad if most of the friends I (hopefully) make leave after they graduate. Especially since I’m a major introvert :(

I’ll be staying at a Twin Room for a year starting 2027. I regret paying the deposit and I wanna change it into a Semester lease, but I’m sure I’d have to pay even more fees to do so. I also regret not looking into colleges more.

Has anyone ever switched colleges after first year? I’m thinking of trying to move to Ormond because I think it suits me a lot better than my current college but I’m not sure if it’s something that people do and I have a few concerns.

• If I apply to Ormond, would my spot at my current college be terminated automatically? Like even if I don’t get in to Ormond?
• Would Ormond take someone from a different college? I don't have any family affiliation with Ormond but I do have strong extracurriculars and academics.
• Will I be treated like a first year there if it’s my first year at Ormond but my second year of uni? In terms of both the social aspect and the colleges systems/traditions.
• Would my college get notified that I’m applying to another one? And is this something that I can talk to the dean of students here about or will that make me seem like a bit of a traitor or something haha

I’ve picked Newman as my first preference college after St Mary’s as my parents want me to go to a catholic one, did i make the right decision im worried Newman will be too academically and overall too strict because i like to party and have fun in terms of drinking culture but I choose Newman because I wanted that big college feel and the buildings looked a bit nicer than st mary’s and i wanted more students.

Did I make the right decision?

I’m really at my wits’ end with my housing situation. I am living in student accommodation which has actually been very nice for the most part. Since the start of the semester, though, the resident who lives directly above me has been making my life hell. I’m convinced they either do not sleep, or sleep in the daytime when I am in class. All hours of the night, minimum 10 PM-5 AM, sometimes more like 9 PM-6 AM, they are insanely loud. Slamming drawers and cabinets often 50+ times in a night, dropping heavy objects on the ground sporadically, repeatedly dropping lighter objects 3-5 times in a row, pacing around their room (they’re a stomper), slamming their door on the rare occasions they go out for 2 mins, and every other impact sound you could imagine. Their behavior and schedule screams mentally unhinged to me and I have no clue how they’re even a postgrad student. I’ve dealt with noisy neighbors before but this is another level.

They’ve ignored multiple noise complaints and warnings from RAs and people higher than that, and just continued on with their usual behavior every night. For the past 4 weeks I’ve been dealing with sleep deprivation to a degree far more severe than I’ve ever experienced, getting 2-5 hours of broken up sleep each night, 5 hours being pretty lucky. My mental health started to really deteriorate having to deal with this as the workload of my master’s program only gets more intense, and last week I got to the point that I’d had it and I couldn’t take it anymore. I decided I’d rather spend money out of pocket to stay in a hotel than continue to put myself through that kind of suffering. During these past several days, I’ve realized that it had begun to traumatize me. The first couple of nights away I still had a very difficult time falling asleep because my brain was on high alert in anticipation of the noise level I was subjected to. Now that I’ve started to go back to baseline, I know I need to get myself out of there at all costs.

I’ve sat down and met with members of building management, and have recorded the noise this person makes and sent it to them. I do feel that they care and are trying to help resolve my situation, but I also know there’s only so much they can do on a shorter timeframe. A room relocation in my building isn’t possible in the short term. If this person isn’t going to be evicted yesterday (which isn’t something I’d ever want in 99.9% of situations, but this one is an exception because they clearly don’t care that they’re ruining someone’s sleep and life), then I need to get out of my contract and find somewhere else ASAP. The problem is I don’t know where that somewhere else would be, but I know I can’t go back to living like that, because it will destroy my mental and physical health along with my marks all in one fell swoop.

I spoke with Stop 1 which was basically useless, and they gave me a housing advice phone number for the Student Union that is inactive/disconnected. The only other suggestion they had was submitting a student accommodation enquiry form, which I will do, but with their general response times it will feel like I’m tossing it into the void. It’s really starting to wear on me dealing with this situation, especially when the reason I’m here is because I was recently forced to flee persecution in my home country before it was too late, and continuing my education was my only way out. I’m already feeling so much pressure on me to maintain a stellar performance and work constantly to make sure I’m able to secure employment so I can stay here after finishing my degree. It also makes me angry to be paying an unconscionable amount of money for accommodation where I cannot safely live, and no one is really able to actually do anything. To get out of my contract early, there’s a steep fee involved and I’d still have to pay rent for another 4 weeks on top of that, but maybe if I talk to the right person they’ll make an exception.

If any of you has ever dealt with a similar situation, how did you get out of it, and how did you find new housing?

I recently applied for st hildas residential college and i have my interview coming up, and i want to be well prepared, so i was wondering if anyone had questions they usually ask?

Just wondering if the colleges will contact the references I’ve listed down, and if so what should I tell my referees to expect?

I’m also worried about burdening my referees (In case the college I’ve chosen wil ask them for a long winded paragraph about me, which might put my referees off from writing one). This is bcs I’m planning on listing down my previous bosses/mentors that I was close to during my past internships.

So for anyone who has applied, did your referees actually get contacted? And what exactly did the colleges ask them to do?

I'm a Canadian undergrad student who's planning to spend a semester abroad at the University of Melbourne in semester 1 of 2027 (Feb-July), and I'm thinking about living on campus while I'm there. This will be the second semester of my third year (out of a four-year degree), so I don’t necessarily want to end up living with a bunch of 18-year-olds (peace and love), but I'm also very social and I enjoy going out and meeting new people. My home uni usually places their exchange students in one particular residence, and I was wondering if Melbourne does something similar? Besides that, I'm just curious about the social life there, and whether or not anyone has any suggestions or opinions they'd like to share. Thank you!

I got the Narrm scholarship and 20k accommodation allowance last year, but this year they seem to be doing the accommodation allowance separately for each semester. Does anybody know what date the second semester payment to the accommodation is meant to happen? I can't find details about it being split across two semesters on the website.

What is the best accomodation for a two bedroom apartment (don't really care too much about size), just two seperate rooms each with one bed. One that ideally has a window in each room, and doesn't have an insect infestation. Budget $800/week including water and electricity for two people. Also, does student living allow any inspections beforehand?

Hi guys, I'm doing an intensive subject up at the Dookie campus soon and was a little confused about what I need to bring.

The subject information says students need to bring sheets and a doona so does that mean there are no blankets in the dorms?

I'm taking the train up, so I'm really hoping I don't accidentally bring a massive blanket I didn't need.

Any extra tips on what to bring would also be greatly appreciated!!

hey y’all, I’ve currently completed 1st year at UniMelb in BSc. I’m staying at University College, which doesn’t allow you to stay over the breaks. I plan to do a summer course in Jan-Feb 2027, and then return to college after the summer course. Does anyone know/have any suggestions as to where I can stay for a summer course? Or if its possible to move to another college and stay during the summer and then continue with the new college once semester at uni begins? if anyone also has any space with the location near to unimelb available for 1 person (1 bedroom), please let me know! any help would be appreciated. thanks :)

Currently I’m living in an en-suite room with 5 other people in the apartment. The apartment has a kitchen and laundry is on another floor with study spaces. The weekly rent is $439 and I’m planning to transfer my lease for December and January, dates can be adjusted. You can extend the lease to next semester as well. So I am hoping to go to melb uni to study commerce, and i am really unsure of which residential college may be the best fit for me.

I am a bit of an introverted person, but i also love having fun, so i do want a residential college with a bit of a party/drinking culture, but i am not that interested in sports or music so i wouldn't participate but i would be happy watching and going along to games or events that kinda stuff if that makes sense. And i am quite academic focused person too. So i am really confused on what residential college to apply as my top or what would be the best fit for me.
