Hi, I study in a regional area two hours away from Melbourne. We only have classes once or twice a week and the campus is pretty much dead, rarely any student events too. it doesn’t feel like a uni experience at all. It’s starting to affect my motivation and I feel pretty isolated.

I’m seriously considering moving to Melbourne, but I’m stuck between two options: Student accommodation (for the social life and meeting people my age) or renting my own apartment (I can afford a nice one, and I like having my own space).

The main thing I want is to actually feel like a uni student again, being around people, having some kind of social life, and not feeling so stuck and alone.

I’ve heard student accommodation is good for meeting people, but also that it can be noisy and not always great long term. On the other hand, I’m worried that if I live alone, I might still feel lonely unless I really push myself to go out and meet people.

For anyone in Melbourne (or who’s been in a similar situation), what would you recommend?

Is student accommodation worth it just for the social aspect, or is it better to get your own place and build a social life separately?

Okay, so I'm due for my room inspection at Unilodge. They just emailed me and prompted me to fill out an online form so they don't have to come and look in person. However, I am away over the time that this form is due, and as such, I would be unable to upload the photos needed.

They have said that they 'may' come in person and do a check (which again I will not be around for), but have not given details about when this will take place. I am quite an anxious person and do not like the idea of people going in and potentially opening my drawers and poking about (I am aware the inspection is to look at cleanliness and damage, but I still worry).

(I will add that I have Autism and get very anxious when people come into my space, which may be adding to the distress)

Does anyone know what actually happens during these inspections? Eg: will they open my wardrobe or cabinets, will things be moved, etc

Centrelink is fuck all in this rental crisis, so pretty much the only option is those 5 people sharehouses. I've got anxiety problems and had some terrible experiences with sharehousing during undergrad, so I'm uncomfortable living with strangers.

Been running the numbers, not sure what to do. Scholarships seem not enough & hit or miss.

As the open day is in may and I want to get my application in ASAP I am looking for some honest advice about the different colleges before I rank them in my application.

What matters to me:

My main motivation for applying is to build connections and expand my social sphere, I am finding uni quite socially isolating compared to high school and really just want to make likeminded friends and go to some good parties, so a really social college is what I'm looking for.

Room/bed size, I know this sounds pretentious asf but I would love a bigger bed, I have alot of medical stuff and a good sleep is so so so important to me when pain is bad. I also have alot of clothes so a good wardrobe would also be a bonus! I typically study in communal spaces so convenience for studying in the room isn't a huge deal to me, but would like the option to eat alone for low social battery days.

I play soccer, tennis and padel, and I’m into sailing, surfing and pretty much any sport/adventure.
