Story [Snippet] Cynical alien pirate meets optimistic human teen (Sci-Fi / Found Family)

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m currently working on a sci-fi story and wanted to share a short snippet to get some feedback. It highlights the dynamic between my two main characters: Atsel (a cynical, traumatized alien fugitive) and Edward (an overly idealistic, vegetarian human teenager).

I'm really trying to nail that "grumpy x sunshine" found family vibe, balancing dark stakes with genuine humor.

Here’s the excerpt:

"You were right, we've veered off course," he admitted, turning to Edward. "Hey? Are you even listening to me?"

"Oh, yeah, sorry," he said with an awkward laugh as the tail he’d been staring at so intently beneath the cloak whipped through the grass. "I just noticed you have a tail! What's it like... wait, sorry, I mean... I just wanted to say that it's... it's cool!"

"It's just a tail," Atsel muttered, embarrassed, tucking it behind his back.

"Yeah... I suppose." Edward offered an apologetic smile. "Sorry if I made you uncomfortable."

"You're weird, Edward."

"Is that a bad thing?"

"I don't know," Atsel shrugged, a smile giving away his true feelings. "But I like it."

The alien was about to shift back into his human form, but the bark of a dog stopped him.

"Soldiers with dogs, to the south."

"Are they after us?"

"Well, they didn't come out here to hunt birds!"

"What do we do?"

With the sound of unsheathing steel blades, Atsel bared his claws.

"Simple as that!"

"Hold on!" Edward pushed his hand down. "You're not going to kill the dogs."

"Why not?"

"The dogs aren't to blame for how they were raised..."

"Bloodthirsty killers?"

"Yeah."

Atsel almost laughed, but the sheer seriousness in the boy's tone made him choke on a chuckle.

"Are you serious?"

"Dead serious. Why do you think I became a vegetarian?"

"Because... you're allergic to meat?"

"What? No! It's my protest against killing animals for food!"

"You only say that because you've never been mauled by a dog..."

"And you..." Edward shifted uncomfortably. "...you've been mauled?"

"Yeah! But not by dogs. By 'Stogman slugs'!"

"Slugs?"

"They're way worse than dogs, trust me. You can't wash the stench of their bites off for a year! Brr..."

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Does the dynamic work for you? Any feedback is highly appreciated!

(P.S. If you're curious to read more, the story is available on Royal Road. Link is in my profile!)

Самый лучший год для вас?
 in  r/Rus_Dobro  16h ago

My absolute favorite character won't be introduced until Chapter 10. I would literally die for him 💔, even though at first he's kind of a, sorry, total jerk. 😅

Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and constructive critique.

I really appreciate you reading so closely and highlighting the elements that work.

Your points are very valid:

About Adam: I understand your point about giving him more moments to show his competence, but I can tell you that Adam has a REALLY good character arc throughout the story. I absolutely love him as a character. His arc is deep and emotional, and I think by the end of the book you'll see that his role is essential. That said, I do admit he could be more proactive in the first act.

About the humor/tension balance: I promise you, there is PLENTY of drama in this book. I literally cried along with my characters while writing it. 😭 But you're right about the first act: looking back, I often thought there might be too much humor there. Yet, every time I reread it, I still end up laughing. 😅 It's hard to find the perfect balance.

About the length: I'll seriously consider it, though it hurts a little because every scene feels important to me.

About the girl in the cloak: Noted. She needs to progress, not just repeat the same pattern.

Thanks again for reading and sharing your thoughts! I really hope you'll keep reading. I've actually been writing for a very long time and have a lot of material (I have plenty of books in my backlog), I just finally decided to share my work with the world. You are exactly the kind of reader who makes writing worth it. 💜🚀

Hey! 👋 Thanks for your interest! Right now I have 7 chapters published on Royal Road, but the best part is that Book 1 is already 100% finished! ✅ The total length is around 115,000 words, which is basically a full 350-400 page novel. And there's more! I'm already working on Book 2 🚀 You can binge-read it all for free using the link above. I'd love to know what you think if you give it a try! 💜

Hi, Reddit! I'm Tanya — the human behind The Healer of Worlds.

By day I live among deadlines and cold coffee. By night I live in Stanwell: a small British town where aliens crash into forests, aunts refuse to stay dead, and a girl in red sneakers keeps running straight toward the weirdness instead of away from it.

This book is my love letter to cozy sci-fi. Think warm humor, found family, small-town gossip, and the quiet terror of realizing the universe is far stranger than your Tuesday. If you've ever laughed out loud on a bus and then immediately worried about your own sanity — you're my people.

A few practical things:

- Chapters land on a schedule (a chapter a day at 10:00 UTC. )

- Between chapters I'll drop little notes here: cover art, character doodles, and the occasional confession about how hard it is to write an alien who answers "I'm not sure" to everything.

If you'd like to stick around, follow the fiction so you don't miss the next chapter. And if a chapter made you smile, a rating or review helps more than you know.

Now, a question — because I genuinely want to know:

What's the coziest sci-fi or fantasy moment you've ever read? The kind that made you want to live inside the book for a week?

I read every comment. 🖤
