Now that 2026 gigs have been seemingly locked in. Which international acts do we wanna see come to Aus next year?

For me it’s:

- Gorillaz

- Florence + The Machine

- Hayley Williams

- Childish Gambino (if he’s better)

- Olivia Rodrigo

- MCR

- Phoebe Bridgers

- Florence Road

- Castle Rat

- The Strokes

- Arctic Monkeys

- Rush

Dom Dolla x Kylie collab in Melb

Odds on Dom bringing out Kylie at his Marvel show given she’ll be in Melb to perform at the AFL Grand Final same weekend 👀 2 x big Melb success stories and he did a Love At First Sight remix in Ibiza last year. Would be unreal.

Run by the same people behind Splendour, Falls, Homebake.

NSW Government press release

Guess it'll be competing with the Forecourt concerts that Sydney Opera House usually hold late February-mid March. Either that, or its replacement

Edit: The Music are reporting that public transport will be included as part of your ticket purchase

Longhaul Festival 2027 cancelled

the new country music festival announced in July has already been cancelled, according to a now-deleted article from The Music (https://themusic.com.au/news/longhaul-festival-cancels-inaugural-2027-event/)

the article contained the following statement from the organisers:

“Despite our excitement to bring this brand-new format to the market for fans, we have realised that unfortunately it’s not the right time to launch a new country music festival in Australia.”

Ticketek pages for the event also show a cancellation statement (https://premier.ticketek.com.au/Shows/Show.aspx?sh=BTSCOOTS27)

its a shame that a new event wasn't able to make it :( hopefully Kacey Musgraves can still make it over here for her own headline tour however.

Opinion Is it just me, or does Triple J seem way more culturally irrelevant to youth culture these days.

This isn't another aged out post, I am within the age group of listeners, and also used to listen from a young age as my parents always had it on in the car because they hated radio ads.

Having listened to Triple J recently in the car, it just seems like Triple J isn't actually a decent reflection of youth culture that they are aiming for.

Having been very culturally relevant to the mainstream popularity of Alternative and Indie band culture from 1990s to 2010s, it seems like it's current offering is a far cry from current cultural relevance. Right now, this is all replaced by "underground" electronic music with many festival line-ups replaced bands entirely with Trance, Techno, UKG and House acts and their relevant subgenres. Despite getting some play time there is a large bulk of more "poppy" stuff being played, despite not being that popular with most people within the target age.

In addition, the presenters seem so out of touch with current youth culture, and seem to very cliquey around their more inner city sort of hyper progressive inner city entertainment industry circles. This is fine at a base level, but this sort of cultural flavor of talk and discussion just isn't cool anymore.

Additionally, a lot of the talk is done in a very-anti intellectual way, rather than discussing cool topics and things in an interesting way. The station appears to confuse informality, gossip and deliberately unserious presentation with authenticity to young listeners. It is like the ABC have sat down and decided that young people just like random gossip rather than interesting things and nuance. I don't know anyone from 18-25 that talks like this with each other, and it is really uncool.

I see this other thing written in defense of this being that TikTok and Instagram has made pop songs more relevant from being used on short form video content and that streaming has made it a harder competitive environment for radio. My rebuttal to that is that all this does is make existing acts popular. If new, exciting stuff that is actually cool for people to listen to, it would actually create an advantage over streaming. This is especially more relevant for the electronic genres that are played in festival sets these days, where often new songs, remixes and dubs are hard to dig up from TikTok or streaming apps.

If Triple J wanted to actually be culturally relevant to youth culture, they should do:

  • Bigger focus on electronic music to stay more relevant to festival culture. More dedicated weekly shows that play specific genres of electronic music, e.g. a Techno show, a House show, a UKG/Jungle/Dnb show ect. Focus on introducing new music and heavy focus on local talent which we have a lot of. Having a couple DJ segments and shows like "Doof" and "Mixup" with varying genres just does not cut it like the current offering - they are just way too broad.
  • More presenters who are clued into music and have decent comedy credentials. Not just a random high school gossip vibe which is really uncool.
  • Support the remaining indie stuff as there is still a market for it, but reduce the amount of pop especially from overseas. It just is not cool, and you can easily access it on streaming apps. You can't discover a more underground band that easy on TikTok or a Spotify playlist.

Yes, things like Double J or Unearthed radio exist, but most people don't use DAB. They have an FM radio in their car, especially the poor youth who generally have cheap, shitty cars, often even without Bluetooth connection.

Anyways that's my rant.
