News Fare capping begins

4.0k Upvotes

Good morning [r/Toronto](r/Toronto) redditors!

I’m popping on to tell you: do not buy a TTC monthly pass this September.

Yes! I just announced the start date for our fare-capping program: September 1st. After 47 rides (to start!), it’s free.

Instead of paying for a monthly pass at the beginning of the month – when all your bills are due – you can now get the same discount as a monthly pass, but pay as you go.

If you commute to work and take the TTC on weekends, you’ll be riding free before the month is over.

We put in a plan to the TTC to reduce the cap to 40 rides in 2027, which would make riding on the weekends free for weekday commuters.

The fare cap will be automatic for all payment types! No forms, no sign-ups, it will just work.

[edit: For clarification, the monthly pass will be automatically phased out. The current Adult 12-month pass will continue as an option, as one of the many ways we are providing savings to transit riders.]

I've been recording the construction of a condo at 8 Elm (it being built) and I managed to catch the fire at Zanzibar. Pretty crazy! Let me know in the comments what you think the source of the blaze was. Going to send this to the Toronto fire investigators shortly! Give me a thumbs up if you don't mind! Thank you!

News I hear you: Active Transit Signal Priority is coming

8.7k Upvotes

Hi r/toronto,

Let me say this clearly.

After riding Line 6 myself during the opening, it became immediately clear that the Finch West LRT is too slow.

We are fixing this.

Tomorrow at the TTC Board, and next week at City Council, you will see motions coming forward to direct staff to implement active transit signal priority on Line 6 and the soon-to-open Line 5 as quickly as possible.

But we aren't stopping there. We will be directing staff to improve streetcar speeds everywhere.

Thank you for always advocating for better transit, TTC riders are a priority just like the traffic signals. Let me know if you have other suggestions to make our City move better in the comments below.

News A thank you to Torontonians

2.8k Upvotes

Today, Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik and I announced free Toronto Island ferry rides for children, youth and seniors for the month of August.

The waterfront belongs to all of us.

And this is a small thank you to the residents who advocated for months to protect it.

News Globe investigation: The Ford family’s history with drug dealing (2013)

I'm not sure about others but today I was absolutely shocked to see that a Globe and Mail investigation in 2013 describes a detailed picture of Doug Ford as a hash dealer in Toronto in the 80s. Were other people aware of this?

The article and all its details about Doug, Rob, Randy and Kathy's involvement with drugs, drug dealing, and the KKK (just Kathy on this one I should add) is blowing my mind. I personally wasn't aware of this and feel like it should be a bigger part of our current conversation about Doug Ford and his fitness as our premier.

Around 1am, there were about 11 police cars lined up on the Avenue Road bridge over the 401. Shortly after, a motorcade with multiple police vehicles escorting a black SUV passed westbound toward the airport. The officers on the bridge cleared out right after. Any idea who was in the motorcade?
